Great to hear the passion coming through Kinman's Pup's. Believe it or not... I actually worked closely with Chris Kinman in his early research n' development of the very first Woodstock series pickups. He is an amazing man... If you only knew the technical engineering and passion he has for his product. I remember clocking off at 5:00pm and winding coils well into the night... wax-pot... solder up... listen again, and again. End result ? The beautiful tones heard all over the world now :)
It is an honor to know someone like you, that works with passion and joy. I own three sets of Kinmans: Woodstock, MK-II and the brand new Impersonator. I love them all, each one in its own way. In my opinion, Kinman pickups are the best Strat pickups in the world. You work is part of it. Cheers!
That song is the first track of the album "John Mayall And The Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton" (1966). The song name is "All Your Love" (Willie Dixon/Otis Rush).
No, not at all. I own this amp for years. Once I got a blown power tube and so I replaced the pair. I tried JJs by that time and JJs had that rattle sound. I replaced again (for JJs) and the problem persisted. Than I replaced for the last time. I went in for Svetlanas. No rattle at all. After about 3 years the tubes are still working good. There is no rattle.
hey, I had that problem, and I think it is the jj's. Even though they sound good (to me anyway) they are cheap and get blown to easily. Try some better tube and that problem should go away. I also had that same sound another time and iw was dues the the seat one of the tube was in. It came loose and had to be re- Soldered . It was an easy fix and eliminated that rattle
hey man. I have a jackhammer and im goin to buy a fender deluxe. Can you say how the jackhammer in distorsion modality ( with low gain and a bit of volume ) work with the ampli on the drive mode ( enough drive for crunch).
If you use the stomp box in front of the amp and add some volume to the signal, the sound will get more distorted, even with low gain setting. I don't use the jackhammer in the effect loop because I like to add more gain to the amp. If you use it in the effect loop, you will get more volume than distortion.
hey man, nice playing! i also bought some kinman blues with k9 switching!great sound, my only question is i dont know if i installed the tone pots right as the controls are not touching the pickguard..why do you think i should do?thanks and tc
This problem is easy to solve. You just have to put some washers between the pots and the pickguard. As you bought the K9 switch (pots included), you can take the washers from your old pot set.
Thanks! I really love this amp. On this recording, the sound is a little bit muddy because I used SM58 microphone (bad choice) and also the volume was too low. At higher volumes, the amp sounds superb, much better than on this video.
These pickups work really good with distortion. Much better than real single coils. With K9 switch engaged (bridge and middle pickups is series) it's possible to get humbucker like sounds and than play AC/DC, ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin and others.
yes i just posted a comment on your mk2 pickup vid, but im trying to decide between the mk2's or these pickups and just wanted the most insight possible. the website sounded like these pickups are the highest output pickups. are they significantly higher than the the mk2's in your opinion?
Woodstock pickups have more output than MK2s. However, Woodstocks tend to break up earlier than MK2s. It means that you can approach MK2s closer to the strings without breaking up and get almost the same output as Woodstocks. The key point of your choice is the tone. MK2s have more vintage sound than Woodstocks. Woodstocks are hotter than MK2s. Both have less sparkle sound compared to real single coils. I prefer MK2s than Woodstocks because they have more presence. It's a matter of taste.
I have another clip posted with Woodstocks. The name is "Fender + Kinman Woodstock & Marshall JCM 800". Watch it to see how Woodstocks sound through a JCM800. Very nice sound! However, I still prefer MK2s.
I bought a John Mayer strat and my Blues DeVille like 2 years ago and they are proven ROAD WARRIORS. Try to find a T-89 Tube screamer, AWESOME!!! Great Vid, keep pickin' and postin'
I like it a lot. In fact, I use only the OD mode, which is superb! I play it through both Blues DeVille and 65 Deluxe Reverb RI amps. In both cases it sounds great.
The drive channel is "light". Just break up the sound to get good blues or classic rock sounds. It is possible to get a nice sustain at high volume level. However, at this point the sound will be very loud...
I've been looking for some pickups to replace the lace sensors in my strat plus... I think I just found the answer. I play through a Hot Rod Deville, so the amp is similar... planning to mod the distortion channel to be more "Marshally" to get the Hendrix sound. Thanks!
Yes. The woodstock set is fat and thick compared to standard single coils. It sounds great with power chords. It sounds better distorted than clean. I have another video playing through a JCM 800 (very distorted). You can check it out.
Hello! This is a 410. Blues DeVille 410 has Alnico speakers, so it sounds more vintage like. It has only one drive switch, not so ovredriven. Good for blues and classic rock. hi teoufaz,a question: what's the bridge pick up on your strat? Avn-69b or Hx-85(plus set)? What do you think about the clean sound of woodstock set? is versatile? Bye.
The bridge pick up is Avn-69b. The pickup set sounds like Strat, but very overwound. For clean tones, I like the MK-II set. With heaps of distortion, I prefer the Woodstocks, because they sound fat. Only one piece of advice: If you want vintage tone, the Woodstock are not so appropriated. However, if you think that vintage Strats sound too piercing, perhaps the Woodies are for you.
So you think that Woodies are the best compromise between clean and distortion? i like a fatter sound for my strat,i think that Mk2 sound a little more vintage but a little thiner than woodies..don't you think? As you understand i need some information for my kinman's choose!
You are right. As Woodstocks are overwound, they are fatter and have more mids and less highs than regular single coils. On the other hand, if you like crispy highs of vintage single coils, MK-IIs are the best option. I have uploaded another video playing this Strat through a JCM 800 with heaps of distortion. So you can hear the difference.
ok...i listen carefully,i think i'll chose Woodies. If is possible can you post in future a comparison between Woodies and Mk2 in every position only played with the clean channel of the same amp? I think should be very interesting! thank you so much...you're very gentle and qualified!
Hi, I've listened to your samples (and even the ones on the kinman website) and I found that the woodstock are not so fat... mean, I found the blues more fat than the woodies...but I may be wrong, did you ever had the opportunity to try them???
Hello. I have a set of MK-IIs and a set of Woodstocks. MK-IIs are fatter than regular single coils. Woodstock in the most fat overwound single coil like pickup that I have ever played (still sounds like Strat). I haven't tryed the blues set, yet. However I have listened to them. They doesn't sound too much Straty, but they are very nice.
Hi. do you love your blues deville? i'm thinking of getting one. Right now I have a super sonic and think it sounds too flat with no low end .. Does this amp cover lows and mids well?
Hello. Blues DeVille, as the name says, is great for blues. Classic rock sounds nice too. It is very bassy and middy. The treble side is a little piercing, not smooth. However, to get the best sound, it is necessary to cranck it up. On this recording, I was playing at low volume because of the neighborhood and also I recorded with a SM-58 mike. So the sound is not so good. This amp sounds much better than it sounds on this recording.
i've been looking at this amp recently and played the deluxe the other day. whats the difference between the deville and deluxe??? and whats the difference in sound with 2x12 and 4x10 speakers??? chears
Deluxe: 40W, 1x12" ceramic magnet speaker, very bright sound. Loud amp! I personally like it.
DeVille 212: 60W, 2x12" ceramic magnet speakers. Fatter than the Deluxe. Very loud amp. Very heavy too...
Deville 410: 60W, 4x10" ceramic magnet speakers (AlNiCo on Blues DeVille). That's the fattest one. Very loud and heavy as well... In the case of the Blues DV, the AlNiCo speaker scoops some highs.
thanks for that, much appreciated! im looking to get a ajack white sort of sound and a nice sort of crunchy overdrive type sound which one do you think would be the best one for the job. and do you think 60W is too loud, or could i use a marshall power break? chears
I'm trying to decide between this and a traynor ycv80. they're both used and at the same price point but I don't know which one to pick. the traynor is louder and is heavier and is lacking some mid tone.
I have HRDV 212 and a highway strat with dimarzio area 58,51 pups. I found the sound of the amp a little dark. That can be fixed? How is the deluxe reverb compared with HRDV? I love the strat sound for 2,4 positions which HRDV can't offer me completly?
The Deluxe Reverb has the best Fender clean sound that I have ever heard. The highs are brighter than HRDV, but not annoying. It has a nice vintage sound. No overdrive channel in it. I will upload a video with the Deluxe. When it is ready, I will tell you. The only think that you can do about your amp, is change the speakers. Before doing that, try a cabinet with Celestion Vintage 30s. Don't forget to umplug your speakers. If you like it, buy a pair of 30s and change the stocks.
i bought this amp the other day! ive been getting a little ringiness from the amp if i hold out a note and it starts to die out after a while. sounds like its coming from the tubes or something..does your amp do the same? this is my first tube amp.
Hello, Buddy. My amp doesn't have this problem. However, I used to have a Peavey Classic 30 with this problem. The cause was bad quality tubes. Despite Fender amps have sturdy tubes, It might happen. You can try to swap the position of the pre (3x12AX7s) and power amp (6L6s) tubes. If it doesn't work, try a new preamp tube in each V1, V2 and V3 position, to check which one faulty. The last try is a set of power amp tubes...
The purpose of that foam is to avoid demage to the pre amp tubes. If you play a long time without it the tubes start to rattle. The tube rattled sound is amplified and the result is a very annoying sound...
Very loud! When I play with the band, I put the volume knob on 2. It goes up to 12! When I turn the volume to 3, they ask me to lower down the volume. At this setting, there is still no break up. The amp is clean. The break up starts on 4...
The drive channel is not very distorted. It is good for playing classic rock and blues, like SRV, Free, Bad Company, Rolling Stones, etc. If you need more drive, you will need to buy a stompbox, like Jackhammer. Than you can play AC/DC, Van Halen, Deep Purple, etc.
I have a deluxe, and my band feel it's too loud as even on 2/3 it overpowers most.
Don't make the mistake of buying a bigger amp than you need. 30 watt tube is enough for MOST gigs. so what you'd do with a 60... (remember you need to crank it for the best tone)
I also have a 65 Fender Deluxe Reverb RI. This is the best clean tone that I have ever heard! However, it has only 22 Watts of power. Good enough for small gigs. For large stages, the Blues DeVille is more suitable.
mandou muito msm. queria uma fender strato dessa aí também. tá sendo raro encontrar brasileiros tocando no youtubi, e só soube que vc era pelo comentário em portugues lá nos meus riffs de ac/dc. thank you about that :D
Valeu! Tem muito brazuca mandando bem no Youtube, mas na maioria das vezes os comentários estão em Inglês. Você está mandando bem pra caramba e é um exemplo disso!Eu considero que ainda tenho muito o que aprender.
hey how are those pickups? can they give a off a fat bluesy kinder tone, because i'm considering buying some soon to put onto my 57reisue strat i find with the stock pickups on my strat, well the 50s ones, are very bity. How much and whats ur overall opinion on the Kinman Woodsotcks?
Kinman have three Strat sets, in a nutshell. MK-II: true vintage tone; Woodstock: overwound tone, even more than Texas Specials; Blues: only for bluesmen. The MK-II tone is not as piercing as 57RI pickups. That is the pickup set that I recommend to the ones that want vintage tone. The Woodstock set is very overwound. That is my piece of advice.
I have been listening to Fenders lately. I am curious of your opinion. I play Classic Rock Aerosmith, B.O.C., old Rush. Which Fender would suit both single and humbuckers guitars and give me the best classic rock sound?
Thank you very much. I fell very happy that I inspired you. I have been playing for 23 years and I am still learnig. You will feel your skills growing fast in the first three years. Don't give up and keep on playing. The results will come soon.
IMO the jackhammer will sound great through a blues junior. However I think that SCN pickups sound too bland. I changed the SCN set and put Kinman's in my Strat. Anyway, I recommend you to take your rig to the store and test the pedal just in case...
Nice tone man, I'm digging the sound and you're playing, so keep it up! And to anyone watching I have the same pickups in my Strat and they really do sound that good. If you've got the dough, they're worth it!
You sound really good man. I've been trying to find a good way to go about learning how to play that sort of style. The Hendrix/SRV style of not really rhythm/not really lead but a little bit of both thing. Some people refer to it as "R&B comping"... The sort of thing Hendrix does on the intro to "Little Wing". Do you have any suggestions on learning this style?
Thanks, pal. Jimi Hendrix, SRV, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour are represented in this video. I also like EVH, Ritchie Blackmore, Jimmy Page, Brian May, Jeff Healey and many other guitar heroes. They are all teaching me how to play the guitar. I wish I could play like them...
Great tones, is that an AVN-69b or Hx-85 in the bridge? I am guessing the former by the sound of it, been going back and forth on which set to get myself.
You are right. The bridge is AVN-69b. In my point of view, this pickup is already very hot. The Hx-85 is even hotter, perfect for P90 simulation when it is in series with middle. The woodstock set is very overwound, good for Texas blues, Deep Purple, etc. The MK-2 set is closer to the Fender standard sound.
Thanks for your opinion. That's the real meaning of this video. I want to know what people think about the sound of Kinman Woodstock pickups, no matter if they like it or not. I think that I added too much color to the sound, than it was muffled. I will post another video using only clean amp, without adding effects in the chain.
the neck is too roundsounding and less stratty sounding. i do have kinmans before. now i learned and i'll go with the real singles stuff. nice playing though.
i have a blues deluxe, the little bro of yours. the drive channel just doesn't work the way i want. i'd like to buy a separate overdrive pedal to add some colour to the sound. what for i need the pedal is not blues, but kind of a fusion sound. i would be happy with some added mids which can be achieved (along with the tubescreamer) with the proco rat, as i've heard, so i'm going to try a rat 2, then i'll see.
Today I tried the jackhammer at low gain settings, as you suggested. It was a surprise to me, because it sounded really nice from 30 to 40% of gain. It was warm and added some balls to the tone. If you have the opportunity, borrow one from your friend and try at your home. I think you will like it, specially at high gain settings.
i'm thinking of buying a jackhammer, i've tried it only with high gain (gain knob about halfway), i really liked it's sound because it's really warm, but that much overdriven it would destroy my entire band along with me. i need something with 1/10 as much gaing. i didn't try it with minimal gain setting (don't know why), but i guess you use it that way. you are the first one i see using that pedal with low gain. what are your experiences?
Jackhammer is good at high gain settings. In this recording, it was about 60%. However, it was in the effect loop which makes the gain less effective. Tube screammers are better for low gain settings. It is too middy, though. I don't like them. If you need just a slight overdedrive, try a cranked tube amp or the drive channel of a good tube amp (please watch again the neck and middle part).

You are absolutely right. There were two mistakes in this recording:
1) I recorded with SM58 mike instead of SM57.
2) The amp volume was too low... because of my neighbors.

ok...i listen carefully,i think i'll chose Woodies. If is possible can you post in future a comparison between Woodies and Mk2 in every position only played with the clean channel of the same amp? I think should be very interesting! thank you so much...you're very gentle and qualified!

OK. I will do it as soon as I can. When the video is ready, I will let you know.

Hi, I've listened to your samples (and even the ones on the kinman website) and I found that the woodstock are not so fat... mean, I found the blues more fat than the woodies...but I may be wrong, did you ever had the opportunity to try them???
Lukeblueslover 4 years ago
Hello. I have a set of MK-IIs and a set of Woodstocks. MK-IIs are fatter than regular single coils. Woodstock in the most fat overwound single coil like pickup that I have ever played (still sounds like Strat). I haven't tryed the blues set, yet. However I have listened to them. They doesn't sound too much Straty, but they are very nice.
teofaouaz 4 years ago
Thank you so very much, I think I'll get a personalized set with a woodstock on the bridge position and the other 2 from the blues set.

Hi. do you love your blues deville? i'm thinking of getting one. Right now I have a super sonic and think it sounds too flat with no low end .. Does this amp cover lows and mids well?
peanutavalon 4 years ago
This amp sounds much better than it sounds on this recording.

thanks i wasnt quite sure how to play the intro to "all your love" and now i can, you got the hideaway double stop bit nice. Great Tone.

i've been looking at this amp recently and played the deluxe the other day. whats the difference between the deville and deluxe??? and whats the difference in sound with 2x12 and 4x10 speakers??? chears
hoistyeeeeah 4 years ago
About Hot Rod series, in a nutshell...
In the case of the Blues DV, the AlNiCo speaker scoops some highs.
teofaouaz 4 years ago
thanks for that, much appreciated! im looking to get a ajack white sort of sound and a nice sort of crunchy overdrive type sound which one do you think would be the best one for the job. and do you think 60W is too loud, or could i use a marshall power break? chears
hoistyeeeeah 4 years ago
I'm trying to decide between this and a traynor ycv80. they're both used and at the same price point but I don't know which one to pick. the traynor is louder and is heavier and is lacking some mid tone.

I have HRDV 212 and a highway strat with dimarzio area 58,51 pups. I found the sound of the amp a little dark. That can be fixed? How is the deluxe reverb compared with HRDV? I love the strat sound for 2,4 positions which HRDV can't offer me completly?
mgombotz 4 years ago
The Deluxe Reverb has the best Fender clean sound that I have ever heard. The highs are brighter than HRDV, but not annoying. It has a nice vintage sound. No overdrive channel in it. I will upload a video with the Deluxe. When it is ready, I will tell you. The only think that you can do about your amp, is change the speakers. Before doing that, try a cabinet with Celestion Vintage 30s. Don't forget to umplug your speakers. If you like it, buy a pair of 30s and change the stocks.

i bought this amp the other day! ive been getting a little ringiness from the amp if i hold out a note and it starts to die out after a while. sounds like its coming from the tubes or something..does your amp do the same? this is my first tube amp.
xxforthelostxx 4 years ago
Hello, Buddy. My amp doesn't have this problem. However, I used to have a Peavey Classic 30 with this problem. The cause was bad quality tubes. Despite Fender amps have sturdy tubes, It might happen. You can try to swap the position of the pre (3x12AX7s) and power amp (6L6s) tubes. If it doesn't work, try a new preamp tube in each V1, V2 and V3 position, to check which one faulty. The last try is a set of power amp tubes...
teofaouaz 4 years ago
man it was actually from this foam protectant they are putting over the 3 smaller tubes, it was missing. but i got a whole new amp out of it. haha!
xxforthelostxx 4 years ago
The purpose of that foam is to avoid demage to the pre amp tubes. If you play a long time without it the tubes start to rattle. The tube rattled sound is amplified and the result is a very annoying sound...
teofaouaz 4 years ago
Does the rattling sound like a little bell going off? Like an annoying alarm clock ringing? If so, I might have that in my blues deluxe...

hi, I want to buy a fender blues deville, is it loud enough, if you play with a drummer.
jeffers1234562 4 years ago
Very loud! When I play with the band, I put the volume knob on 2. It goes up to 12! When I turn the volume to 3, they ask me to lower down the volume. At this setting, there is still no break up. The amp is clean. The break up starts on 4...
teofaouaz 4 years ago
So you have to use pedals voor a distorted sound? Or will the drive channel do the job?
jeffers1234562 4 years ago
The drive channel is not very distorted. It is good for playing classic rock and blues, like SRV, Free, Bad Company, Rolling Stones, etc. If you need more drive, you will need to buy a stompbox, like Jackhammer. Than you can play AC/DC, Van Halen, Deep Purple, etc.
teofaouaz 4 years ago
Alright, that's the kind of music I play a lot, so it will do. Thanks for the advice.
jeffers1234562 4 years ago
I have a deluxe, and my band feel it's too loud as even on 2/3 it overpowers most.
Don't make the mistake of buying a bigger amp than you need. 30 watt tube is enough for MOST gigs. so what you'd do with a 60... (remember you need to crank it for the best tone)
soundwrks 4 years ago
yeah that's true, i think I am gonna take the deluxe. Are there any other tube amps with the same price as the deluxe?
jeffers1234562 4 years ago
of that style? the deluxe is certainly the best.
but if you wanted a better drive channel maybe look at at an Orange Rocker 30 too? (Not as good in my opinion)
soundwrks 4 years ago
I also have a 65 Fender Deluxe Reverb RI. This is the best clean tone that I have ever heard! However, it has only 22 Watts of power. Good enough for small gigs. For large stages, the Blues DeVille is more suitable.

hey how are those pickups? can they give a off a fat bluesy kinder tone, because i'm considering buying some soon to put onto my 57reisue strat i find with the stock pickups on my strat, well the 50s ones, are very bity. How much and whats ur overall opinion on the Kinman Woodsotcks?
57restratv 4 years ago
Kinman have three Strat sets, in a nutshell. MK-II: true vintage tone; Woodstock: overwound tone, even more than Texas Specials; Blues: only for bluesmen. The MK-II tone is not as piercing as 57RI pickups. That is the pickup set that I recommend to the ones that want vintage tone. The Woodstock set is very overwound. That is my piece of advice.

I have been listening to Fenders lately. I am curious of your opinion. I play Classic Rock Aerosmith, B.O.C., old Rush. Which Fender would suit both single and humbuckers guitars and give me the best classic rock sound?
myway43 4 years ago
In a nutshell, American Standard series or any Strat with Kinman pickups with K9 switch. I will send you a mail explaining it better.

you think a jackhammer pedal will sound good with a blues junior and an american strat with noiseless pickups??
i had a jackhammer for years and never really used it.
joshhayesuk 4 years ago
IMO the jackhammer will sound great through a blues junior. However I think that SCN pickups sound too bland. I changed the SCN set and put Kinman's in my Strat. Anyway, I recommend you to take your rig to the store and test the pedal just in case...

how much kinman pickup

I am guessing the former by the sound of it, been going back and forth on which set to get myself.
setzer2269 4 years ago
You are right. The bridge is AVN-69b. In my point of view, this pickup is already very hot. The Hx-85 is even hotter, perfect for P90 simulation when it is in series with middle. The woodstock set is very overwound, good for Texas blues, Deep Purple, etc. The MK-2 set is closer to the Fender standard sound.
teofaouaz 4 years ago
it doest'nt sound real strat to me. :(
LASTEKO 4 years ago
Thanks for your opinion. That's the real meaning of this video. I want to know what people think about the sound of Kinman Woodstock pickups, no matter if they like it or not. I think that I added too much color to the sound, than it was muffled. I will post another video using only clean amp, without adding effects in the chain.
teofaouaz 4 years ago
the neck is too roundsounding and less stratty sounding. i do have kinmans before. now i learned and i'll go with the real singles stuff. nice playing though.
LASTEKO 4 years ago
i have a blues deluxe, the little bro of yours. the drive channel just doesn't work the way i want. i'd like to buy a separate overdrive pedal to add some colour to the sound. what for i need the pedal is not blues, but kind of a fusion sound. i would be happy with some added mids which can be achieved (along with the tubescreamer) with the proco rat, as i've heard, so i'm going to try a rat 2, then i'll see.
trutyesz 4 years ago
Today I tried the jackhammer at low gain settings, as you suggested. It was a surprise to me, because it sounded really nice from 30 to 40% of gain. It was warm and added some balls to the tone. If you have the opportunity, borrow one from your friend and try at your home. I think you will like it, specially at high gain settings.
teofaouaz 4 years ago
i'm thinking of buying a jackhammer, i've tried it only with high gain (gain knob about halfway), i really liked it's sound because it's really warm, but that much overdriven it would destroy my entire band along with me. i need something with 1/10 as much gaing. i didn't try it with minimal gain setting (don't know why), but i guess you use it that way. you are the first one i see using that pedal with low gain. what are your experiences?
trutyesz 4 years ago
Jackhammer is good at high gain settings. In this recording, it was about 60%. However, it was in the effect loop which makes the gain less effective. Tube screammers are better for low gain settings. It is too middy, though. I don't like them. If you need just a slight overdedrive, try a cranked tube amp or the drive channel of a good tube amp (please watch again the neck and middle part).
