@tubemejlh I believe you are incorrect. I had both of the N.Y. music books (the white one and the black one.) True, Neil does not always sing exactly as the lyrics are written, still, I believe it is 'ten'. Ah well, it was 1968.
this guy John Entwistle was fantastic! Saw his with the Who years ago at MSG.
Townsend cuts his hand on the guitarand leaves the stage, Daltrey goes "Kenny Jones on the drums!" Jones flies into this amazing drum solo and suddenly John starts jamming with him, laying down phrase after phrase, after phrase going deeper and deeper... best fucking part of the whole show... total impromptu!
@ylwf It was in 1981 at Madison Square Garden... The Who played something like 11 sold out nights! Pete was in bad shape. It's a shame, he was doing some real heavy drinking... probably lucky to be alive. Certainly took Moon and Entwistle. They were great musicians. I don't know how they played so good- loaded like that. Any time I ever went into a studio fucked up thinking I sounded great, I would listen to the tape later and man- it was bad! Ha! Ha! Peace man!
Been years since this album was stolen from me, but--as I recall--the lead guitarist on it was Peter Frampton, at about the time he was playing lead for David Bowie. (odd, but pretty sure that's true) As for turning up the gain, it was Ox's solo album and he probably had control of the mix. I didn't know they cut this, though...now it's find it or die time.
@rpmhart No, this was released in 1971. Frampton toured with Bowie in the late '80s. Not that that matters, as he didn't even play on this. It was Dave "Cyrano" Langston, who seems to have come out of obscurity to record this album and then gone right back in. Gain, in this context, refers to the input stage of a guitar amp, which when turned up overdrives the next stage and produces distortion. Loadman842 would like Townsend to sound more like a 14 year old boy trying to sound like Townsend.
@toadman842 Pete Townsend is a genius, as I posted before. But wait, this is a John Entwistle solo effort. Don't think Pete was on it but I'll check later & let you know. I KNOW you'd want to get it right.
@toadman842 The hilarious thing about this idiotic statement: Pete's tone, from 1970 onward (until some time in the late '80s IIRC) was inspired by Neil Young. See, Townshend and Joe Walsh from The Eagles were good friends, and would often give each other musical instruments. Walsh gave him a Chet Atkins 1959 (I think) Hollow Body Gretsch 6120, and a particular set of cable, pedal and amp, and showed him how to set it up to get that Neil Young sound. Of course, this is John's band here, not PT.
No songs are sacred. Art -- and especially music -- is meant to be interpreted and re-interpreted, not preserved as a museum piece. We don't have to like the re-interpretations, but it's better to have them for the sake of creativity and artistic life, than to avoid them for the sake of some sort of "purity."
@ben909ben I love your description of the song and your poignant comment that "some songs are kind of sacred." That's exactly how I feel about this song. At the risk of introducing disagreement instead of perfect harmony, which we've achieved so far, what other songs would you call sacred? A few of mine would be:
"Pictures of Lily," "Waterloo Sunset," "What Do I Get," "Born to Run," "How Sweet to be an Idiot," "Cemetery Gates" and "Heroes and Villains."
@Whofan1000 Thank you, Whofan, the beauty of music, is we can all have sacred songs, and it still adds up to harmony. Hard to imagine anyone else pulling off "Born To Run"! For me, I would add "Helpless", which k.d. lang did a righteous version of, "Riders on the Storm", and "Tangled up in Blue".
I'll go look some of yours up. Yeah - Pictures of Lily, Who else could write that, Who else would play the French Horn on it like that, and Who else would contribute such backing vocals?
@ben909ben Nice to hear back from you - not sure "led me to Whatever" means? In case it helps, "Waterloo Sunset" is by the Kinks, 'What Do I Get" by the Buzzcocks, "How Sweet to be an Idiot" by Neil Innes, "Cemetery Gates" by the Smiths & "Heroes and Villains" by the Beachboys. Of your other faves, I think "Helpless" (like "Love Hurts") is a great song with strong, hard and pure emotion. I also love the epic "Tangled Up in Blue" and, just a little less, "Riders on the Storm." Great choices!
@A10thunderbolt No, it's definitely him. Besides the fact that it's on a reissue of one of his solo CDs, I'm also sure because I remember back somewhere around 1970 reading an article in which Entwistle said that he loved the song and was thinking of recording it. Since the Who were my favorite band and "Cinammon Girl" was one of my favorite non-Who songs, I was excited and looking forward to it. And now, a mere 40-some years later, I get to hear it! Thanks to Doctorzaius for posting it!
Johnnie covering Neil's classic!!! Fucking great!!! John could have played a billion notes on this song, but he was such a talented musician he played the riff and a couple of extra notes. He knew when to shred, and when to play the basic pattern. One of the greatest bass players ever.
thanks for post-I had no idea the who bass player had a band ,album. etc great cover! And a truly great bass player he played a 'lead' bass that really propelled a lot of townsends songs-thanks John!
FUCking hell! Where did you get this?!! I had NO idea he ever attempted a version of this. Sounds brilliant, true to the original but with that rock solid bottom ol' John was known for and he makes the song his own. Thx 4 posting!
This was a bonus track that was included on the cd release of his solo album "Smash Your Head Against The Wall" The cover of the album is the first image you see on the video
@doctorzaius77 Thanks so much for replying, and I'm glad they added it on as a bonus track. It's such a shame he's not with us anymore but hey, he died the ultimate rock n roll way, in a world class hotel room in Vegas surrounded by groupies, booze, and coke.
@cudaj2 Sorry man, but that's no way to go. All the life and music we've missed - makes me furious. Same for Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, Moon, Bonham... fucking booze & drugs!
@cudaj2 I'm with you on that. Just before scrolling down to read the comments, those very words were running through my mind..............................We must be linked,hahahaa!........But, as I wrote, the self-same words were going through my head. A great cover of a great song.
This is a bonus track taken off the re-release of one of Entwistle's solo albums from the early '70s. It wasn't considered good enough to be included on the original release, and it might not have even undergone full production. The footage of him in the red suit is from Rick Wakeman's Gas Tank TV show (1983) - there are a couple of clips of this on YouTube.

The sound quality is bad because it's Youtube. If you can find the mp3 you can hear it better.
And covers don't have to be completely different. You can do them a little similar, but sometimes you can have fun, like DVDA's disco cover of Primus' "Sergeant Baker".
I love John's bass playing, but his version sucks ass. Way too muddy & what the fuck is up with the volume jumping in the instrumental parts? The song is way too slow too.
Jon Entwisle always complained The Who were never as popular, or made as much money as The Rolling Stones.
Well Jon if you're listening, The Who have been my favourite band for the last 30 years but you, Roger and Pete are/were so self absorbed and fuckin' boring. That's why Mick Jagger & co made more dosh, at least they're slightly interesting when interviewed.
Pop sells, that's why. And quite frankly, at the time, a lot of people were scared of The Who because of their live performances. All the crazy shit they did in the early days with smashing their equipment. That scared a lot people back then. They thought they were way too violent. That's why the Stones made more money cause they didn't act so crazy on stage, smashing equipment & what not.
The stones stopped being the stones after Keith had Mick kick Brian out , they became more and more a profit machine, and that is what they are and have been for so long.
Who are you talking about ??? not the WHO ?? LOL ...unless some thing is missing your talking about the stones ???I MAYBE SHOULD GO To bed ..the ox rocks this neil gem..
You are crazy. This version is not bad, but it is not as good as the original. And it is missing the little 15 second drop d power chord thing at the end, which is one of the coolest parts of the song.
This will never match the true genius of Neil Young's self-penned version. I'm not saying this is not good, but Young's version undoubtedly rocks harder.
BS...this song marches better than Niel Young. It's heavier. Not that it's better...but you can definitely hear the Who's influence. I just heard this version yesterday on Alice Cooper's radio show and I was surprised at this version.
love how the ox has tried to catch the authentic guitar sound of the original! what album is this off? i'm a massive who fan and i've just started getting into neil young. this is ace!!!! cheers man!
I'm a massive WHO fan as well. If you've never heard YOU HAVE TO see my video of "I've Known No War" from the album "It's Hard"
My dad had the original LP of John's best solo work SMASH YOUR HEAD AGAINST THE WALL (the cover of the album is at the beginning and the end of this video)
This song and a few others were ONLY released (as bonus songs) on the CD of Smash Your Head Against The Wall (The cd was only released after John's death ) DEFINITELY check it out! ;-)
The man had a great style about him, great musician, singer, songwriter and quite a witty chap to boot. Sadly missed, John you blessed us while you were here. No doubt he's still first chair bassist in heaven.
I might add that John's song Heaven and Hell is one of the conummate songs in the Who songbook and probably my favorite on the Live at Leeds album....a real tour de force.
It was really great, i wonder if he toured this album,..... I would love to hear him sing some of these tracks live.....would be a real shame if he never did.
Glad you enjoyed it!! You might want to check out the vid I posted of MY SIZE by John Entwistle (From the same album) I think you might really like it as well. :-)
Neil Young wrote it. But John could know Neil. Watch the Wakeman Ashton interview and you can tell they all know more about one another than us outsiders. Did you know Neil knew Paul mcCartney well, I didn't. Or that Linda McCartney knew Jim Morrison well? etc etc
I'm not surprised about Linda, she was a good celeb photographer before Wings but while she was with Paul (In The Beatles) It makes sense that she would get to know other famous people.
Yup, Linda photographed The Buffalo Springfield (hence her connection to Neil), The Doors, The Grateful Dead, The Jefferson Airplane, The Who, Stones, etc. I think she had relationships with several members of some of those bands.
I heard this version on Midnights with Alice Cooper...HEAVY, HEAVY, HEAVY!!!!!

Check out Type O Negative's version.BTW Don't forget to crank!
rippadog 2 years ago
Oh yes, you are so correct. Type O's covers of other band's songs are, or should be, legendary.
keefek 2 years ago
I have to say this is a far superior version!
magicbus144 2 years ago
You are crazy. This version is not bad, but it is not as good as the original. And it is missing the little 15 second drop d power chord thing at the end, which is one of the coolest parts of the song.
abeatlesguy 2 years ago
LOL i suppose im biased as a WHO fan!
magicbus144 2 years ago
This will never match the true genius of Neil Young's self-penned version. I'm not saying this is not good, but Young's version undoubtedly rocks harder.

BS...this song marches better than Niel Young. It's heavier. Not that it's better...but you can definitely hear the Who's influence. I just heard this version yesterday on Alice Cooper's radio show and I was surprised at this version.
mikebecker330 2 years ago 3
I must disagree. Hearing both side by side, this is very much chunkier. I'd prefer it to Neil's version even if I didn't already like Entwistle.

Brilliant!
Nothing flashy.
Played in the same time, with no frills,
Staying true to Neil's original, which is what makes it Brilliant, for me.
Peace.

@rockinroller7 ...you are absolutely right. These versions (Neil Young's & Entwisle's) both compliment each other extremely well

ray good call two amazing musicians interpreting their song . no real differences but it's way better than doof doof garbage

Thanks. Always great to get a reply from someone with similar views on a song.
Even if they are words that disagree, I'm always, with respect, willing to make a comment for others to contemplate.
Peace.

BrasilNYC2007 3 years ago 8
It was really great, i wonder if he toured this album,..... I would love to hear him sing some of these tracks live.....would be a real shame if he never did.
doctorzaius77 3 years ago
John divided the history of bass guitar before and after him! A truly virtuoso! The nicest version of this song!
gvt76 3 years ago
My fav too (No offence to Neil Young) John's version takes it up a notch!!

That was magnificent. I need a cigarette.

Neil Young wrote it. But John could know Neil. Watch the Wakeman Ashton interview and you can tell they all know more about one another than us outsiders. Did you know Neil knew Paul mcCartney well, I didn't. Or that Linda McCartney knew Jim Morrison well? etc etc
dspenz 3 years ago
I'm not surprised about Linda, she was a good celeb photographer before Wings but while she was with Paul (In The Beatles) It makes sense that she would get to know other famous people.
doctorzaius77 3 years ago
Yup, Linda photographed The Buffalo Springfield (hence her connection to Neil), The Doors, The Grateful Dead, The Jefferson Airplane, The Who, Stones, etc. I think she had relationships with several members of some of those bands.

Not surprising considering the times! I saw her stuff featured in a mag recently, it was pretty good!

If that is Keith it sounds something along the lines of
"Chicken Lovin'
Finger lickin' good"
That's my best guess (without trying to look it up)

Thats Keiths voice at the beginning!

This song is played MUCH better by John in my opinion. Its a heavier feel to the song.
Have you ever heard the song " Back on the Road " ?
Another amazing song by John.
