I am SO confused by the running finish. The steps do not seem to be on the beat. They are neither slow (2 beats) nor quick (1 beat). In fact, those three steps seem to take four beats.
@esthermlaw The running finish is a step where a lot of dancers (both syllabus and open) enjoy some levity with the timing, but I can assure you that the running finish is QQS. This confuses some, given that most quickstep figures begin with a slow. Think of the running finish as a suffix to your footwork. For instance in his routine you have a back lock (SQQS) then a running finish (QQS), SQQSQQS, Also, this makes the figure have 12 counts, rather than the usual eight, or four which can confuse
@FueledByRitalin Thanks for the reply. I'm having such a difficult time with the timing of this. It looks more like a QQQ than a QQS....but I'll take your word for it that it's supposed to be QQS.
@GayBrits if u mean his forward lockstep after the tipple chasse....i assume it is because he is already left side leading ready to step outside partner, so he will not need the right foot forward in cbmp outside partner...

Terrific instructional video, but why oh why doesn't someone write some, decent, up to date music for the Quickstep, so that we can finally dispense with this rubbish from many decades ago?
There's countless examples of good modern music to which the Quickstep could be danced. Instead, one is almost invariably confronted with the kind of Glen Miller crap in this clip or stuff from even further back in time, even to the Charleston era. It's particularly frustrating as every other ballroom dance has so much beautiful, contemporary music. Only the Quickstep persists in holding on to music to which no one can possibly relate if they are younger than 100.
The Quickstep WAS derived from the Charleston (and a jazzy Foxtrot), so it makes sense that its music is reminiscent of its predecessor.
The only song written for Quickstep which I like is "Let's Face the Music (and Dance)" in instrumentals. Otherwise, I just use contemporary music minus the vocals.
I actually dance Slow Foxtrot to "Let's Face the Music and Dance", but I guess it's just the way it's played. I can put up with occasional archaic numbers when they accompany other kinds of dances, as there is also plenty of good modern stuff for them around. With the Quickstep, however, there is nothing but archaic crap. Believe it or not, my dance club once expected us to dance the Quickstep to the theme from "The Muppet Show"!!!

You merely need a 4-count song where the beats are emphasized on the 1 and 3.
