  • great lecture. Ray is always very insightful.

  • Unfortunately, the law of exponential growth also seems to apply to traffic jams, stupidity of politicians, etc. Here, Kurzweil's "singularity" can't be far into the future.

  • The moment I saw the nanobot doing the gas exchange in the blood, I was just awestruck. There are so many benefits to more efficient gas exchange in the body that it isn't even funny, and so many red blood cell related diseases that would become moot at a stroke. It would be much like supercharging the human body.

  • I agree with Kurzweil, I think we are either alone in the universe or everyone else is far behind us or is just non-technological life or no life at all. Nobody is ahead of us. Maybe.

  • TL;DW XD

  • @AshiteratsuAka Thanks for your feedback - it's a pity you missed a great lecture by not watching it!

  • @setiinstitute don't get me wrong i didn't had the time to watch it, but im watching it now XD

  • This video was posted a year ago.... that means I'm LIVING IN THE FUTURE!!!

  • @KidFiction101 holy sht and im reading your comment 2 months after you posted it, im LIVING IN THE FAR FUTURE!!!

  • I just wanted to point out that we do not necessarily need the early stages of a embryo to obtain stem cells. Recently it's been discovered that women's menstrual blood contains stem cells too. This blood can be donated......kind of gross I know, but I think it's a better alternative to give when dealing with people who disagree with stem cell research from a moral standpoint.

  • @silent9173

The stem cells used can repair damage in the human body.

It can only grow back the finger tips as it is unable to grow joints.

When people have limbs that have been damaged it will be possible with this technology to generate growth to allow the would to heal.

Amputee can have a problem with healing this technology will help.

To grow back joints with this technology may also require artificially engineered joints with stem cells.

  • @silent9173 I've heard of it. I think they haven't done a controlled study yet so it's still snake-oil until proven to work in lab conditions. Not sure either though,... wait and see I suppose

  • I think extinction by biological warfare is the most likely fate for humanity. Public knowledge and intelligence will continue developing, but immorality will remain a constant.

  • Awesome lecture. The future is going to be amazing.

  • we have only 2 billion years to get out of this galaxy!

  • lol! Yes that may be true since our sun only has so long before it goes supernova..the more interesting aspect of your statement, though, is how far we will have advanced by then, if we don't eliminate ourselves..

Assuming a starting point of 2, we will be 2^(2,000,000,000) more advanced by then, which is a number our calculators can't even handle because it's approaching infinity. The limit of our technology is unfathomable even 500 years out...just try to imagine 2 Billion!!! :)

  • Quick correction: our sun will never go supernova, it's too small. It will eventually expand before shrinking then go out.

  • If I may add, the Sun's outer layers will continue to grow outward, until a nebular cloud is formed. The remains of our star will be a 'white dwarf'. However, it could go Super Nova, if in the far off future it encounters another star...

  • @Niquia1986 Never say never:) It might go type 1a supernova, if somehow after becoming a white dwarf our sun will meet a wandering star, and they start orbiting each other. Then the companion star and will start giving its material to our sun, and that might lead to our sun to go supernova.

although the probability of happening that is fantastically small:)

  • dont you mean to get out of this solar system?

  • @selearemus its 3 when andromeda and milky way collide but it wont affect us.

but in 1 billion years earth will no longer support life.

  • All the questions weren't very well thought out. I could predict his responses. There was however one exception that came from the lady sitting in the front row. Her comment: I wonder if you've ever considered that we might be seeing the effects of galaxy-scale engineering and even in Gardner's terms universal engineering and that dark matter and dark energy are the manifestations of some advanced technology.

    That's some interesting speculation.

  • Unknown8761: I found that a unique comment as well.

  • very interesting q&a at the end of the video
