Hi, In the late 70's my parents owned and operated a bar and grill. I played ,worked and even did my homework in the bar. My parents divorced and became alcoholics, I believe that being around drunks when you are sober is very difficult and stressfull. In my early 20's I developed a problem with alcohol and marijuana as well. At age 41 I was able to stop, and allthough it is going to upset some people it was through Jesus Christ ! 9 years 2 months 21 days ! Clean!
i used to drink ..... genetic ? hmmmmm.. i think its due to the fact it eased what i had in my head, now i know how to manage the issues in my head i drink social, did i beat the gene? did it vanish or were my eyes just bigger than my belly ? we all have the gene that develops faster if something we do deflects the pain we have, chocolate, shopping, games, drink, eating etc.uh oh i can hear people now "dry drunk alert" or am i just able to cope with issues in a normal manner, i go with the latter
fact: sons of alcoholic men are already alcoholics. they dont have that enzyme. also native americans are born without it. im not sure how it works with females. i am an alcoholic, but , my sister is not. but, we also have different fathers. my father was an alcoholic and my mother is..
You mention that 'there is always somebody in their family with the same problem', but that could be down to environmental factors, living in a particular neighbourhood can influence people in that area to behave in a certain way, and also the people you hang around with; if you are praised by peers, that's encouragement to drink. Humans and our ancestors have been around for thousands of years, alcohol dates back less distance, so did the gene for alcoholism suddenly grow from nowhere?
Im starting to think im a a alcoholic, but my parents dont drink in fact they hate alcohol and wont even have it in there house, but both there fathers were alcoholics and my mothers father had cirrosis of the liver and died from complicaions from it, can it jump a generation like this?
I am an alcoholic. Here is a list of alcoholics in my family (blood related): *mother *Aunts X2 (mom's side) *Uncles X2 (mom's side) *Grandmother (mom's side) *Grandfather (mom's side) *Father *Uncle (father's side) *Grandfather (father's side) *Brother *Cousins X2 (mom's side)
I have walked in your shoes. My mother and sister were alcoholics. I was also an alcoholic for many years. But I don't buy the notion that a gene can compel one to drink against one's will. It can only predispose one to drink too much. I do not know whether I could never have avoided becoming alcoholic if I had better judgement when I was younger. It's all conjecture. All I know is that when I started getting DTs I had crossed the line and would never be able to drink moderately after that.
I prefer calling it a personality trait, sounds more scientific. My uncle died by liver failure, drank all his life. My parents got hooked as soon as they could afford it, luckily I had moved out by then. But their drinking habits made me look at my own, and I realized how dangerous it is to binge drink once or twice a week. I've been cutting down now and will kick it. Thanks for posting these inspiring videos!
I think they've discovered the gene. But for your study, I can give you a little family tree, and I think it skips generations (like the red hair gene)
On my mom's side:
Her dad was an alcoholic, but so was her grandma on her mom's side. So I think she got it from her grandma. Her mom was not alcoholic. For me, I would have gotten it from her dad (my grandpa). I've noticed this sort of pattern in other peoples families too. Anyways, clearly not scientific data, but that's what I've noticed.
manque, my mum neve touches the stuff nor does my father. And the whole family doesn't. Just me.
20 beers per day, every day. Three packs of fags. I think my problem is obsessive-compulsive.
Sometimes I justt stop everything for about two weeks and then back on relapse.
I would however warn anyone, that beware the antidepresants - notice that every mass-killings we have seen all of them are on SSRIs? That is because those drugs are NOT THE Solution.
I agree that Alcholism is in the GENES. I just made a report about it. i dont have any relatives with the genes but according to my research, there are people with more alcoholic tendencies because of their genes!
my family has had alot of people with alcohol problems...i have tried to stop drinking and have done quite well for about three days. As a matter of fact the only thing that helps me is watching your videos... you make me laugh all the time which is something i need...thanks
Sure there is an alcohol gene! People have lots of genes for things not yet invented. I have a gene that has me hooked on the internet! Do you think, I would stop, if I could! Maybe it is just a YouTube gene. Do not take responsibility for your actions. AA says it, you are powerless. God has a plan and it is for you be an alcoholic. Let go, and let God. Bottoms up.
Yup people in my family drink, and use computers. I do not drink anymore. I lost the gene. Now to change my eye color.
I ve been looking up alcoholism in the library - according to the sources AM is a polgenetic condition. ie it can be a mixture of several genes. ps god i wish i could stop pps smile and have a nice day :)
I asked my Mum if her Dad drank (I knew her own mum didn't) & she told me at length how he drank a certain amount every Saturday and a bit more on xmas. The funny thing is my Mum was probably the first person I ever saw pissed - and i put her to bed on a number of ocassions. But she never offered herself up as an alcoholic. I didn't remind her that her second husband offered me a hair of the dog when i was 16.
I'm an alcoholic and both my parents had problems with alcohol.
My doctor told me that there is evidence that alcoholisim can be genetic. I envy people who say they haven't had a drink for weeks let alone months, I wish I felt like they did.
From age 10-current, I've been hospitalised over 100 times for dislocated knees. My point is, Genes get passed down to family. They might skip a son or daughter but they DO get passed down. For the skeptics, explain crack babies who are adopted to good familys/good education yet are drawn to crack?
I love your videos, the knowledge/experience you're sharing manque15. This is the 2nd video of your's that I watched. I'm currently trying to stop my drinking. Stay sober, take care & smile =]
I'm 27 and started drinking at 12. Started drinking heavily at 18 when I got a job and could afford to drink. My mom and both of her parents were alcoholics along with my mom's brothers and sisters. My brother, he isn't an alcoholic. But he is a druggy. lol.
My dad was in a motercycle accident when he was 14. Road rash took away the skin and meat on his right knee and the knee dislocated. Spent one year in the hospital. That alone CHANGED his genes and I inherited thoses genes... Continued...
Is it possible to be alcoholic & not go thru the DT's? How about the binge drinkers, is that the same or a different gene from the alcoholics? I've known plenty of both(& wonder if I'm alcoholic myself) & I thought trhisdone nailed the portrait of a binge drinker. vacillateallday's comment was good, also.
Luckily, I guess, I didn't go thru the DT's. I still drink most everyday, but, I think I'm seeing a change of attitude, ie, some days I'll make one, take a coupla sips & just throw it out. However, other days I still drink gleefully, lol. I hope I can get back to the point I was at in my twenties, ie, having a few(if any) drinks a year, period. I'm still not sure whether I'm mentally or physically driven to drink, or if it's a combination of both. cont'd
No good friends lived nearby, I began to drink heavily again, just missing my dad. Got it under control again in mid-2004, then a devastating break-up in mid-2005 led me to drink more in the last three years than I'd drank total in the rest of my life. So, for me, I think drinking is just essentially self-medicating depression & sadness & feeling sorry for yourself. I "tested" myself a few times this year, seeing if I could go two days without booze as I was afraid I'd become alcoholic.contd
Hi, I have not drank now for 5 months, I attend A.A. meetings, I have heard many people talk about the alchohol gene never believed it until recently, I began to think that they may be some truth. Yes alcoholism runs in the family, would love to see some scientific proof on this until then I'm being sceptical but open minded. I get so much from watching your videos it helps me immensely, thankyou so much.
Cutting down only tortures you. It's a " progressive disease " Meanining it gets worse and worse. Goes back to te saying " One drink is too much and 20 drinks isn't enough " Abstinence is the only known cure.
Read the Big book and learn about the two AA founders. Both smart people. One was a Doctor, And yes, I have tried to cut down. It works until you find yourself drinking more, making up for lost days of not drinking.
In '97 my alcoholic father had become an invalid & I took care of him until his death a few years later. My dad, half Seminole, became an alcoholic in his FIFTIES, rarely drinking before that. This period greatly cut down my drinking & my drunk time, as I LOVED my father very much. He had sacrificed damn near everything to get custody of me when my parents divorced, and, at that time, it was virtually unheard of for a dad to get custody. So, I was devastated when he passed away. cont'd...
I've no idea HOW she hid this from me until after the fact. But, I knew about alcoholics hiding their habit & stash, I'd seen my Seminole Injun granny do this with her also alcoholic 2nd husband. B4 marriage, wife & I had vacationed on Alabama coast for a week, & even more amazingly, she had shacked up with me for ten days during the great blizzard of '93. How in the world did she hide a case(that's 24 in USA) of beer habit per day plus White Russians, Frangelica, & whatever else. Cont'd
OK, no AC in Southern heat & humidity. Now it was very convenient to put a note on the music store door & go next door to the pub & drink in the hot months(half the year). After a coupla years of this, drinking just essentially became an every day thing, just a very easy thing to fall into. And, I went from being drunk maybe once or twice a year to being drunk at least a few times per month. I married & divorced an alcoholic during this time. To be cont'd
I drank verrry little, in spite of being a musician for years, until I was in my thirties. I think it started as a matter of convenience. I became a hired bridge(the card game) in '82 & there were just parties & booze galore at the bridge tournaments. Rock & Roll groupies have NUTHIN' on the tournament bridge world. Then, I opened a music store in late '88 in a building with NO air conditioning, but, next door to a pub. Oops, my space running out & I have chores, to be continued...
I am an 18 year old alchoholic and yes pretty much all of my family is alchoholics and I try to stop but cant find a way to, without alchohol lately its been better but i still drink consistantly and find ways to get alchohol
I am a binge drinker. I can go weeks without drinking but I will not have one drink I will only stop when I run out or physically can't drink anymore. I am trying to quit and usually make it 3 or 4 days. I am like you I never drink 2 days in a row simply because I am too sick. I havn't drank in 5 days and I really want to but I just won't drink today. God Bless You.
Hey Vic, good to hear from you, has been a while. I have alcoholic family on both sides of my family. There is absolutely NO DOUBT in my mind that "craving" is limited to alcoholics.
It is a mental obcession and a physical compulsion. Non alcoholics can never understand what it is like. Once the first drink is taken, the craving takes over and off to the races.
You help so many people Vic, I just love you for that. ") Good on ya. Mark
I'm an alcoholic. Both sides of my family were alcoholics. Even my grandparents were alcoholics on both sides. All my Uncles and Aunts were alcoholics. They are all dead. , I think that it puts us at greater risk when it's in the gene pool. T.H.I.Q. is the biochemical culprit. Tetrahydrolsoqulnoline Virginia Davis did studies of the human brain of alcoholics and what she found was very interesting. Check it out on the web.
On one side of my family it is rife. Me and my sibling are both alcoholics. One parent has a drink problem but is now sober. There are a lot of other relatives, distant and close in relationship, who have or had huge problems with alcohol.
I would drink like a normal person if I could. Who would want to put themselves in situations I've put myself in because of drink on purpose, out of choice, is beyond me. I'm convinced that alcohol affects alcoholics differently to non-alcoholics.
I thought you had gone silver and couldn't show your face. kidding. My father may have been but if so it would have been that he was a functioning alki. He never missed work cuz of his drinking but he could drink. I was a functioning alkie, sober now, as you know.
LOL nope not blue yet and still drinking it every day!.
That's another myth people have about drunks, they think that alcoholics dont work or function from day to day and as we all know we do that very well hiding our problem!
I also am an alcoholic with almost 3 yrs sober. I also beleive it is in the genes. My father was a chronic alcholic, tried to stop a few times, but eventually drank himself to death at 47. My mother drank also. My fathers father was an alcoholic, and my uncles, his brothers, were alkis as well. On my mothers side, two of her brothers were alcoholics who drank and smoked themselves to an early death. Her father didn't drink, nor her mother.
I spoke to several geneticists about this and none said that a gene had been identified for addiction. Now if you think about a behavior problem - then my money would be on that. Great vids. by the way. Thanks.
My grandfather was an alcoholic and I am as well. September 1st will mark 6 months of sobriety for me so I'm pretty excited about that. I agree with what you said completely. Unless you've walked in the shoes of an alcoholic you have no idea what it's like. Great video.
You are correct!!! I have studied the other side of this disease and got a diploma for it. Well studying addictions it states that being an alcoholic, or drug addict, or having an addicted personality is handed down genetically. For me there was allot of alcoholics in my family and that is the life style I did get to know until I did get sober Sept 7th, 2005.

I agree!! alcoholism does run in families, it is genetic, just like certain cancers are.
My FIL was an alcoholic and his daughter is too.
The point is admitting that you have a problem is the first step, before anyone can get treated.
I smoke, that is hard to stop too, and I have an addictive personality.
People who have never drank too much, or smoked or whatever should not be so harsh, i'm sure you have your faults too, just like everyone else.

Hi,
I spoke to several geneticists about this and none said that a gene had been identified for addiction.

I am an Alcoholic my name is Rob.
