This in my opinion a very important Caruso record. For its beauty. For the choice of the music. And for the special warmth that exists between the singers. 1914 was a superb year for the quality and grace of Caruso´s immortal voice. Emmy Destinn is the right choice of partner for this enchanting duet.
This must have been a popular selection years ago, judging from the number of recordings made of this WONDERFUL duet, which is a favorite of mine. Thanks for this posting.
@gmmix Yes, it must have been quite popular at the time. These days, Gomez is not the first operatic composer one thinks of... Wonderful aria none the less.
@mozartibnkhajjam Most welcome, Maldoror! I like Destinn in this aria. She was great - comparable to Rosa, but maybe more dramatic, less lyrical - in the recordings, I've heard.
Just have to thank you once again for your wonderful work in preserving the memories of these artistic giants. Just listen and look into their eyes. Integrity and beauty like theirs is priceless. They are wonderful singing partners and I wonder where is greatness of spirit like theirs, today?
@goodboybuddy1 You're very welcome, James. As you say great artists, great spirits.
I do think there are artists of comparable integrity and - at least to some extent - greatness today, but they are hard to find due to the massive, money-oriented advertizing/promotion of inferior quality singing in TV shows, etc.
I don't like this development. In the Golden Age of Opera, as represented here, the emphasis was on emotional expression and quality of communication. Now it's more of a show....
@tomfroekjaer Perhaps you could suggest one or two contemporary artists in this league. The few times last year I tuned into the Met Broadcasts, I was really saddened by the voices I heard. I'm quite out of the loop as far as singers younger than Rene Fleming, etc., go, but I'm ready to be enlightened!
@goodboybuddy1 That's a hard challence ! Maybe wishful thinking on my part....
Soprano Anna Netrebko, though, I think is exceptional. Listen to her "O mio babbino caro" - IMO comparable to Fleming. But still not as good as Callas.....
@goodboybuddy1 OK, I listened to as much Netrebko as I could find and, well, she sure is pretty, and there is a kind of steely, slavic quality to her voice ( a bit like Milanov) which I find appealing, but theer's not really a lot of technique working here, just mostly raw vocal talent and looks. I'd call here a third rate Destinn. But I apologize for even asking the question in the first place, because that's not why we're here at you great channel. The great one have already sung!
Two of the greatest ever at the height of their gifts! Nothing more need be said! Except, thank you, Tom for another great download.

@goodboybuddy1 Just read your comment by accident - you answered your own comment :-)
Well, I was just trying to find something/someone to give us a glimmer of hope for the future....
Seems like we'll just have to face the fact that we may never encounter a new Caruso, Björling, Gigli or Ponselle, Destinn, Gluck.
And no new Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Verdi or Puccini.... We've entered an age of decadence as far as art is concerned.
