Suggestion: drill a hole in the top of the can and then drop a 4 inch bolt down through the piece of metal with the holes in it, it will keep the top metal support from moving around.
I put a large flat washer against the lower frame, one nut, one lock washer and a second nut. they aren't self-locking washers but that may help. I just used it yesterday and, knock-on-wood, have not had trouble. Good luck!!
I've built one of these, and tried to use it today. My problem: I used two lock nuts to hold the lower frame holder in place, one above and one below. What I didn't foresee was that when it started spinning, it unscrewed the lower nut, and basically spun itself to pieces. How do you keep the frame holders stationary on the threaded rod? Please let me know, as I'm sick of doing crush & strain. Thanks.
I have been wanting to build one of these too. Did you use 3/8 or 1/2 rod? And what did you use to set the shaft in the bottom? Looks like you got it working good, great job.
I used a 3/8 rod as a shaft and at the bottom I used scraps of Corian counter top about 1/2 inch thick. I cut two small squares of it, drilled a hole in the middle of one big enough for the shaft to sit in. Next I drilled four holes, one at each corner of BOTH pieces so that they could be anchored to the floor of the trash can with four small bolts.
