singer in the middle is Jeanette Jacobs - she suffered from epilepsy and passed away at 30 from the disease. She wasn't just being a 'cool cucumber', she had to limit her movements to avoid triggering the epilepsy I think...something like that... cute chick!
@jojoranter She is on Myspace and I've been trying to 'friend' her, really to ask if she could write a bio about herself and her friendship and times in the 60s..
In both videos, the dance steps look so graceful, professional, well practiced, a pleasure to watch. Unlike the 'drill dance' on those 50's movie musicals, so boring! The '65 Go-Go dancers in the YT videos, "Lies"-Knickerbockers, "Keep on Dancin'"-Gentrys, and "It Ain't me Babe"(or "Let me Be")-Turtles were Booty/Long Hair shaking dance girls. The Cake appear far more entertaining, though derailed by personal issues. Our Loss. Enjoy these precious clips.
@movingon4ever I AM enjoying this and I definitely agree with you. They were in their late teens and what I love about them is they didn't follow the girl groups from the past, they each wore their own style of clothing, wroter their own songs and sure were hip and cutting edge.
@skidog1478 Passed away and still young. They really didn't try to get back together, hunh? I mean, the 80s were kind of following what the 70s went through after the 60s ended which defined that whole decade. It was a free for all and anybody's guess as to what could be a trend.

I checked out Wikpidia and the information about the last girl band/music groups of the late 1960s and I'll be damned there's not a mention of The Cake at all, just the 'major' players who received the big media spotlight. WTH?!?
@TumbrelJockey Yes, I think you're right. The watusi, the legs do catch air. God, all three of them are so FINE. Of course, I would not be born until a year later. : )
and that's a moroccan shirt Jeanette is wearing - Jimi wore them (see Are you Experienced cover) and they were very popular on sunset blvd and within the stoner acid circles of that period... i wonder if she was an inspiration for Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star
Didn't they use Phenobarbital (downers, reds) to control epileptic fits, yeah...they did...that is why she looks so stoned...I think it is highly likely the truth she died having an epilepic fit - it really does explain everything. Wow... and I thought Hope Sandoval stood still !!
Well, Jeanette was best friend's with Jimi Hendrix and tried to adopt many of his ways of performing on stage and one of those was standing still on stage. She was also known to go out to drug parties with Jimi.
what's up with jeanette? i knew her in the 60's. she used to hand out at the Night Owl Cafe, where i worked. she went out with a handful of guys that played there.does anyone know how she died, i've heard about 3 different versions.
she was always a bit airy fairy, but may she rest in peace.
I would say most likely & most true story of how she died came from Dead Rock stars website (they seem to be very well researched). They give Jeanette's death date as January 1, 1982. Supposedly she died of a 'fit'. (Being friends w/ Jimi Hendrix, after Jimi died in the early 1970's, Jeanette had a mental breakdown & after spending time in a mental institution she supposedly recovered -- but eventually her mental condition is what led to her marital break-up w/ Chris Woods of Traffic fame).
I'm not sure, the Dead Rock stars website doesn't go into to too much detail on those two bits of the story. Although someone upabove has previously written and alluded that she suffered from epilepsy (which would fit into the idea that she suffered a mental breakdown after learning of Jimi's death, as well as her dying of a "fit" either because of drugs or not).
Although, what I would want to know from all of this, since that Dead Rock stars website list that when she died on January 1, 1982 she was 31 years old, is since that would have meant (according to the math I know) and the time of this performance that would have meant she was only been 16 or 17 years old, where were her parents during all of this?
Did they have backing singers? sound like more than three/ two voices there. The dark one has a GREAT voice. I bet there were some coloured girl backing singers...perhaps??
It's precisely what makes it great, the fact that she CAN'T BOTHER dancing - can't you see it's all done on purpose, with that droopy-like figure ? Please BUY the Cake's comp. on England's Rev Ola label, they have baroque-pop songs which are totally gorgeous, credited "that girl who can't dance", J. Jacobs !
I've been trying to, and I thought they were doing that on purpose, Jeanette could at least swayed back and fourth, It wouldn't've made it look so bad
Barbara ROCKS and she has the most powerful voice. The video proves it. Being that I am a recording engineer specializing in voice, I think I qualify to make the call. If you are envious cause you don't have the natural born talent and are just mediocre, that is not my problem.
I know that the label and many industry people were interested in Barbara Morillo the lead singer (understandably so). Not sure why she didn't become a huge star with that voice...my god. The other two girls are great but they don't even come close to delivering a song like Barbara! It takes natural born talent to have that power and maturity to the voice at 19 with no formal training.
singer in the middle is Jeanette Jacobs - she suffered from epilepsy and passed away at 30 from the disease. She wasn't just being a 'cool cucumber', she had to limit her movements to avoid triggering the epilepsy I think...something like that... cute chick!
