OMG!! I saw one of these (we grew up in the woods of CT) as a child. I get the chills whenever I think about it. My bf has never seen one so I found your vid on youtube. That one is huge! Im never going to New Zealand!!!! ACK!!
I saw a very large one of these in Valley Stream State Park, NY, when I was 11. He emerged from nowhere, and started trotting off. Me and my cousin got outa dodge immediately.
ive got a mate who has a phobia of these things, I asked him why, he's all like :"they just sit there and sway back and forth(0:33-0:44), they dont know which way they're going WHAT KINDA BUG DOES THAT!!!!" hahahaha
@UniqueMonique513 I didnt stay outside to watch..lol my fiancee was out there lookin at them . If it had my hand in winning..WITH ALL THOSE LEGS in the way it'd be a tie but I'd give it to the Stick BUG!
its neat, i had a pet chameleon once that did that exact same thing when it moved, it would sway back and forth or forward and backward and i could never understand why, turns out its to simulate leaves blowing in the wind, this stick does the same thing, its weird how they know to do that.
Nice video. But "Giant walking stick insect", am I detecting a lack of info? :P
A more scientific name is Phasmatodea, I think this one is "Ctenomorphodes chronus", closest looking thing in my insect book atleast. Did you make a trip to Australia during this or can these be found in New Zeeland?
I still remeber the first time I saw a walking stick. I was about 8 or 9 years old and has just relocated from Chicago to Orlando with my family. Me and some newly found friends decided to explore a wooded area and one walked right in front of me. Man, I screamed like Drew Barrymore did when she first saw E.T!!!!! lol!
Phasmids are professionals at crysis, that rocking motion is to resemble a stick blowing in the wind. This one is particularly interesting, it even has thorns.
i remember seeing one twice that size ( maybe more) about 2 years ago, i thought it was just a stick so i went to pick it up and it moved, scared the shit outa me..
See how is was Dancing on his leg? Thats It trying to pose as a Dead Twig Moving in the wind, It sorta failed at that though because it was standing up, they are suppose to sit down and do that.
ftw is that?
