  • I think that Gnome Shell it's better to use in a tablet

  • Can I install this on HP touchpad ? I know there are ways to install Ubuntu chroot or whatever its name is but I want this version I hate webos and android Google can u please please help me if u can????????????????? Thanks

  • I have also installed Ubuntu 11.10 in my Iconia W500. The interface is beautiful, but frankly, I find it frustrating to use;

    1)No multitouch support.

2)Page scrolling still have to be done using the scrollbar. Using touch screen for this is difficult, I have to use a mouse to do this.

3)No auto popup virtual keyboard when you click on a textfield.

I hope Ubuntu will release a true tablet-friendly version in the future. In the meantime, I'm sticking with Windows 8 Developer preview.

  • @andrewcoffee

Multi-touch is now supported with the latest EETI eGalax driver kernel 3.0 and in /etc change the eGalax ini file Direction to 2 to get the y axis orientation working properly.

  • @Kathleenhenri he doesn't care, he'll stick with Windows 8 ! :D

  • Arrg why does acer have to ruin an otherwise great tablet design by back lighting that damn windows logo.

  • @joe4ska I know what you mean, but it only lasts a few seconds . . . .

  • Nice vid on the W500! I'm having trouble getting easystroke to work. Do you have a walk through on how you set it up? Mine won't record the strokes.

  • @matt6592

Open Easystroke, under Preferences tap on Gesture Button and select Button 1. This is allows you to use your finger touch to make the stroke.

Then select the Actions tab. Select Add Action. Name it whatever you want - in this case Right Click. Under Command select button. Then under Details choose button 3. if you have a mouse attached you can right click in the grey box. Now you should be able to record the stroke you want with your finger to call up the Right Click.

  • great vid, thanks!

  • Sorry to come across a bit stupid but why not use a lxde summit like ultimate 3.0 lite? wouldnt be as heavy as unity or gnome

  • can i have a link of that wallpaper please if any one can help me :(

  • @PTontonozi

Do a search for ubuntu_aurora_by_monkeymagico. You should be able to find it that way.

  • @Kathleenhenri thanks mate i found it :)

  • I got multitouch working. Install the EETI driver for kernel 3.0 and in /etc change the eGalax ini file Direction to 2 to get the y axis orientation working properly

  • @TIMX511

I just installed this and it works! Thanks so much for the tip.

    :-D

  • another bug is that onboard doesn't fully show up after locking the screen. i eventually have to redock the pad to relogin.

  • @ringonian

Choose log on as different user. That will get you back to the login screen and you can get the onscreen keyboard to come up from there. Its some extra clicks but it works.

  • @matt6592: i actually figured it out. I had "start onboard hidden" on. so when the screen is locked, another instance of onboard starts up "as hidden" and all you see is a white area where onboard would normally be. so technically it's still a bug. the workaround is to disable "start onboard hidden".

  • Thank you Kathleen for such an excellent review. The only negative being that it rose my "crave" level to buy, however sadly this tablet is not available here in South Africa. WHen it does come it will probably cost the equivalent of about $900... scary hey. Off to check your other videos now.

  • I almost wish i had bought the W500 instead of the A500...

  • good to see is actually running, but still need lots of work to become a seamless out of the box experience. so i hope that in the next 2 years the devs can achieve that.

  • @madjunir

Linux does require a bit of patience. However, with this latest Ubuntu release almost everything works out of the box on the W500 including front AND back cameras . . . . So really, I have no complaints.

On the other hand, how often have I had to search for a Windows driver or fix to support hardware on a slightly older computer? Or find that there is no support for a particular driver with a new Windows version? More often than you'd think.

  • @Kathleenhenri yes, that's true.

linux has advanced a lot since i first started using it!

am just referring that since ubuntu already made the public announcement that it will ship by default in tablets in the next 2 years, they will need to address every little issue you pointed out (and probably some others).

These videos are very useful. Not sure if you have been involved in testing or would like to get involved some time. :)

  • is better ipad

  • @Elcomunisto

They are so different that I would not try to compare them side by side. The W500 is a fully capable computer with a capacitive touchscreen, with an SDHC slot, USB connectivity, an optional keyboard dock, and is capable of running a variety different operating systems.

The iPad is primarily an entertainment device running on a closed system and made with limited peripheral connectivity. It won't even pair with a mouse unless it is jailbroken.

  • @Elcomunisto This is a iPad Killer!

  • Did you install uTouch?

  • @cortexhugo

    Yes.

  • Ficou muito Legal :-) mas seria melhor o Gnome 3 ao invés do Unity mas mesmo asim está muito Bom.

  • @14021996raf

Sim. Mas Gnome 3 não funciona com o driver de vídeo ATI gráfico.

  • This is why open source is so great!

  • good video ubuntu on tablet

  • Pretty Awesome!

  • Looks great! BTW, can it be used for sketching like iPad? Does it offer palm-rejection when used with stylus pen? Is there pen-only option in OS settings? Thanks!
