I think if someone really wants to understand the true root of Chinese martial arts, they should switch to Wudang. Because, Wudang's much more preserved in it's original form than Shaolin and its last generation is only 23rd.
From what I understand, if someone REALLY wants to understand the "true root of Chinese martial arts," they should really study Shuai Jiao, since it's supposed to be the oldest Chinese martial art.
Shuai Jiao just means 'wrestling' . This is pretty much the oldest martial art in any culture. There is no single martial art of shuai jiao in china, but every individual art has its own 'shuai fa' or wrestling techniques. Modern Sanda contains alot.
