  • great music!

  • Like most Bartok, playing it overly pretty is wrong. It should be fairly aggressive and folksy.

  • @panamericana9 um. no. I can tell by the sound she gets when she tongues the reed that her embouchure is at fault.

  • first off - recorded in the 70's in a very dry environment. 2nd - compressed audio at likely no better than 128Kbps, likely from a video tape. 3rd - she's a British Dame, and you don't get that by being a terrible clarinet player. i agree her sound is pretty strident and totally unlike Benny Goodman's that i've heard but i wouldn't judge her entirely from this performance. if there was a nice reverb sound from a natural room you'd like it 10X more. please grow up, people...

  • @darkmatter88 Obviously you have no idea who Dame Thea King is then!!!!!!!!!! Geez

  • unreal! 4:42 to 5:10

  • at clarinet dude below: it's bartock. it's not supposed to sound traditional.

    Love this song though<3

  • Absolutamente fantástico.

  • Clearly you guys are from the kinds of schools where they teach you to play in wind ensembles and to be afraid of high notes haha cause I don't find much anything wrong with her sound. That's really how articulation sounds when you tongue without stopping the airstream (the proper way). There was that one part in the middle where her sound kind of attacked the recording quality, but other than that I thought her sound was pretty great. That's just my opinion though :-)

  • dude, you don't know shit about good clarinet sound

  • well then why don't you enlighten me?

  • well,go to my profile and listen to me. i got 10 times better sound than her and i still think that i can improve!

  • Well guy, I watched your video, and though it's a good performance for sure (congrats) to suggest that you perform Bartok and a slow Piazzolla piece the exact same way is something I must disagree with. I mean Bartok is very aggressive music and the style in which you play should reflect that. Although you sound great playing the Piazzolla, if you played the Bartok with the exact same style, I don't think you'd be doing a good interpretation of Bartok:

    My opinion.

  • I will soon put up my performance of Bartok Contrasts. I'm traying to solve a little problem with video and sound quality of the recording but after i'm done with that i will put it up on YouTube. You can subscribe to me or something like that so that you can be the first to watch it...

And i agree with you that Bartok is aggressive music and you will se how aggressive i can be and still have a 10 times better sound then this old lady! ;)

  • @Chlarisnetty you obviously don't even know who she is, do you? This is Dame Thea King. She was one of the worlds leading clarinettists, who taught the likes of Michael Collins. It seems like from the way you're talking that you you "don't know shit" about CLARINET.

  • @cymro89 I know exactly who she is(was - R.I.P.)! But i still think(and 90% of people here) that the way her clarinet sounds is like an empty barrel! And i believe i know A LOT about clarinet! It looks like it's you who doesn't know shit about clarinet playing! You should have checked my channel first and see who i am before commenting! Now you just look stupid!

  • @Chlarisnetty I was actually quoting you. And as for not knowing anything, I studied clarinet at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Thea and then in Germany with Wolfgang Meyer. I also teach at UK conservatoire junior department. As for your videos, I had indeed seen them before commenting, and you're not as great as you think you are. Perhaps a little modesty would suit you better.

  • @cymro89 I see, you were her student so that's why you're so protective about her, i can understand that... Still, she sounds like crap in this video. Maybe i'm not the best clarinetist in the world(lol) but i know i sound ten times better then her.

Btw, i have a stronger biography than you! :P And i also teach clarinet! on Music Academy and i'm only 23 years old! Upload some videos of you playing so that we can see how good you are!

  • @Chlarisnetty those discussions are useless!! Grow up, boys!!

  • @Chlarisnetty

    Very arrogant and immature comments.

Just 2 points: The clarinet is not meant to sound beautiful in this piece,

and the video doesn't give an accurate reproduction of the sound anyway.

  • @MrFpam

Yeah, but i believe it was meant to sound as a CLARINET! And it has nothing to do with the recording... ;)

  • @Chlarisnetty you would also know that her sound is typical of the English school of playing.

  • @cymro89 And you should also know that with that kind of sound everybody will get eliminated in qualifications round of every competition in world(except in Britain, i guess... i've never been in competition in Britain). Maybe that "English school of playing" should consider some radical changes in teaching...

  • @sologuitardeath Seriously?! This is what you have to say ABOUT THE VIDEO?!

My comments were about the clarinet sound and you reply on that with curse words, wishing that i break all my fingers and telling me to f*** my self??! And after all that you say i'm nobody and a douche... Tell me then, how do you call people that leave this kind of comments like you did?

First learn some manners and then post a comment(a comment with an actual constructive point)

P.S. Highest rated comments support me!

  • he has a point, but for her age her tone could be better...

  • Complexo

  • hermoso!!

  • damn i like it...

  • The chords the violin plays at the beginning of this movement remembers me of the Dance Macabre by Saint-Saëns.

  • yea thats what i thought of when i just heard it.

its almost exactly the same chords.

  • In reply to the last comment, Thea King is one of the best clarinet players of all time, she really does know what she is doing lol, only a fool would say she isnt in the mind of Bartók's music, while she is playing his Contrasts in this recording.

  • Woww just because she was married to Fredrick Thurston doesn't make her one of the best clarinet players of all time. I and a some other clarinetist call her the player with the UGLY staccato.

  • Well U and your clarinet friends really dont have a clue lol, what an asshole u are :P and why do u bring Fredrick Thurston into this "ddaaaaaa" lol

  • Because she is not a good clarinetist and the only reason she is famous is for being Fredrick Thurston's wife!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • pop-staccatto is different than classic!!!!

  • Thea King plays awful...it's like you hear a first year conservatory student playing. There are just so many technical imperfections and what's worse she has an outright ugly tone. If you haven't got a beautiful voice, please don't sing. She may be a fine musician and a very intelligent person but she's not a real clarinettist.

  • The clarinettist isn't in the mind of Bartok and has problems, what a shame !

  • Totally agree with you. She is long way from being world class clarinetist.

  • sdc

  • thank you for this video

  • I listen to You Tube Bartók's pieces and more and more I like them! I have never thought I would like XX. sz. classical music!!!

  • at 6'23'' Menuhin is just WONDERFUL!!!

    (it's ironic)

  • yes i would have to agree that the whole thing is wonderful. poor menuhin -- kind of like a driver's license...

  • he should have done those left hand pizzicatos...

  • yes, but this is not the worst mistake he does!

  • sure, Menuhin is much better here than in the first movement.

  • it's not so bad, but Menuhin in the cadenza is terrible!!

The best recording for this piece is the one with Berkes, Pauk and Jando. Try and check

  • What a terrific clarinetess and I mean tess.

  • Precious movie with Menuhin!

  • Evvai!
