Back in the day I got everything Herbie Mann put out including Memphis Underground & Concerto Grosso in D Blues (I think). One of my favorites was an album "Soul Flutes" that never mention Herbie by name only calling him the "fluteman" or something like that.

mmm... a lot of people like herbie mann..but there is something that i dont like about him...i would rather go with HUBERT LAWS...

I don't claim to have listened to enough of either to make a solid judgment, but my impression is that Hubert Laws is more improvisation, or jazz; whereas Herbie Mann, often repeating melodic phrases, seems to fit more into easy listening. That said, I love both.

You would have to listen to his records from the 50's and 60's to hear him doing hot jazz. In the 70's he started covering more pop tunes . Laws is actually a classical trained flautist from Julliard who brought that skill to the jazz idiom.
