Whew that was heated. I dont think that people understand that the word "marriage"means a lot contractually. There are contracts that allow "married" couples to recieve certain benefits, if you are a domestic partnership or a civil union couple, you may be left out of certain insurance deals, home ownership and inheritance protections and certain tax loop holes. This is the reason why the word is so important. It is to avoid the shady behavior that so many Americans have already displayed.
Mexico (Mexico City), Argentina, and Spain have legalized gay marriage. All traditionally Catholic countries. Why them and not us? They have a sense of civli rights not beholden to a superstitious entity. Their governments are not vitiated and trammeled with fundamentalist Christian tripe. Other faiths have no problem with homosexuality, and even within Christianity there are sects that accept it. Easy. The State has no say over 'ceremonial' marraige. Churches all over the country don't have to recognize, or cater to interracial couples, interdenominational couples, or couples in which the woman has been divorced. Its not 'ceremonial/church' marriage thats on the table. There ARE churches that hold 'ceremonial weddings' for gay couples. Its LEGAL marriage, like the kind that atheists get, thats in question. Churches are not needed for 'legal' marriage. Just ask any married atheist.

These are separate issues. You don't justify discrimination of a whole population in a fear that others might be sued. If that's a problem, then deal with that issue separately. Nevertheless, when preachers talk about homosexuality as an abomination, kids take that seriously. Gay teens have a very high suicide rate because of such practices. Nevertheless, I do promote free speech, even when it is bigoted and hateful.

The conservative pro-8 people (and pro-22 people, and pro-2 people) redefined marriage first, by adding the word "traditional" to it. Before 8 and 22 there was no such thing as "traditional marriage"; it was just "marriage". If we overturn the props, it will go back to being just "marriage".

Outlaw ALL marriages, and convert all of them to civil unions with no religious ties whatsoever. The married people can stay married, but no further marriages would be performed. If you want to be together, it would HAVE to be a civil union, period.

The fact is that the laws of this country takes into account a wide range of religious beliefs. Other faiths have no problem with homosexuality, and even within Christianity there are sects that accept it. To get your knickers in a twist over this and not the other things in the Bible that are tolerated in America seems to me that you have an oddly deep connection to this issue over others.
