Natürlich die legendären Aufnahmen mit dem deutschen Tenor P e t e r A n d e r s mit Günther Weißenborn ( Köln, 1948 ) und Michael Raucheisen ( Berlin, 1945 ) am Klavier.
Listen to those pigs clink their silver forks against their stolen porcelain while the underpaid slum-bound wage slaves bend over backwards to dish out the lobster & stuffed quail. They could care less about art, refinement or the beauty of spirit necessary to indwell the space from which such music proceeds. They're beady eyes are fixed on the next big kickback from their oil lobbyist crony, their next big military venture to seize the valuables of an innocent people's land.
The lyric mistake in the first verse was forgivable, but the missed entrance in the fast section was not. Granted, it's a tricky entrance and you have to count the beats, but c'mon! That's what professional singers get paid to do. That accompanist saved him from a lieder meltdown. Such a wonderful singer but in all fairness, this was horrible.
He actually messed up a lot. He was a measure late on an entrance, but the accompanist saved him. He mixed words up all over the place. He had an off day, or perhaps wasn't well rehearsed on it. Doesn't take away from the fact that he's one of the best, and my favorite baritone.
I"ve been listening to Hampson for a long time. I think his enormous voice is so much better suited to the late Romantics (like Mahler, certainly) then for Schubert. I think Schubert calls for a lighter quality in the low voice.
That said, I kind of cut my teeth on Schubert lieder with Fischer-Diskau and Gerald Moore, probably the great combination of singer and accompanist in generations, so I'm obviously biased.
Well, this wasn´t brilliant but still very nice to hear; pronounciation started quite well and he tried to sing legato as good as possible which is not very easy in that piece! In the 3rd part his concentration might has been went out of control a bit. My feeling says me that Hampson is stronger when he sings in Dur than in Moll. Listen to his "Bring him home"(G W Bush concert), its SO beautiful; I could say, his very best song ever!
@MisterBailecito So he made one error with the lyrics. He sings with great expression and if some Besserwesser would not just look for that one error, he would enjoy this more...
Maybe I sound harsh, but for me Heinrich Schlusnus was the master, and maybe a younger Fischer-Dieskau, even Hermann Prey, (guess it takes one to know one) I'm very spoiled, but I do also like Nana Mouskouri's version, - the song is not often sung by a female..
as a native German speaker, I give Thomas 10 out of 10 for his impeccable pronunciation, over -say 50 years- I've heard many different interpretations of this beautiful Schubert song,
I had till today never heard of T.Hampson, he concentrates too much on the words and sometimes sounds a quarter note above the piano. a good trial, but not enough of the German Romantic feeling in his voice, and appears to be too slow at times and not passionate enough in the minor part. greetings from Scotland

Hi sings:Und seiner Zweiger rauschten

Intonation, naja....
Aber dann noch die schlimmen Textfehler:
"Da träumt in seinem Schatten", ja wer denn??? "Ich träumt" müßte es heißen.
"Der Kot flog mir vom Kopfe" anstatt der Hut flog mir vom Kopfe.
Das ist schon lächerlich.

Also ich kenne ihn besser. Er hat hier drei krasse Textfehler. Einmal am Anfang und dann "Der Kot flog mir vom Kopfe" und dann nochmal am Ende...

As a native German speaker, I heard that he got confused with the lyrics on 0:54.
He sings "Da träumt in seinem Schatten so manchen süßen Traum." Repeating the word "Da" from the phrase before instead of singing "Ich".

MisterBailecito,
You're correct. He did make a mistake. I have the sheet music right in front of me. :)
