  • I recorded a video with fraps, which was originally a good few gigs. I rendered 10 seconds of it and the quality was somewhat poor and it was around 57MB. I used this and it IMPROVED the quality and brought it down to around 3MB. Thank you very much.

  • I'm having some trouble.. when I try to play it or when I upload the video to youtube, it's only 3 seconds long. Any tips?

  • @MegaBroadwayPrincess Make sure you have not put a check in 'render loop region only' on the render settings page.

  • Haha, thanks for this, AVI is ridiculously big, I rendered a video that was 4 minutes long and it turned out to be over 27Gb! Youtube said it would take 48 hours to upload >.<

  • This takes WAY too long.

  • @Wrestlingfan414 To make it easier for you, set your project properties to '720-30P'.

Then after editing your video, use 'render as', and render to .wmv, using the 720-30P template. Then upload to YouTube.

  • @guerillabill Okay thanks I'll try that. But it was only doing like 60 frames in 20 seconds...and I was doing a video over an hour long.

  • Thank you, this was a big help.

  • thanks so much!

  • Is this still effective? Youtube might have changed certain compression things in the meanwhile, seeing as this video is from 2007.

    Thanks

  • @Luchtanker If editing HD videos for YouTube, use the settings I show in my YouTube video 'Sony Vegas Movie Studio Settings for HD wide screen at YouTube'

  • I have .wmv but no template so I cant save it pleas help

  • @jetblueilikeful As mentioned in the video, I created the template, so you won't have it on your Sony Vegas. But you can use the settings I show, and then click the disk icon by the template name to save your own. These settings are for standard definition, non wide screen videos for YouTube.

  • @guerillabill OK Thank you

  • thanks from germany! this video is really a great help!

  • thanks alot

  • Thanks So Much!!

i recorded 5 hours of footage, but it had black bars. i wanted to optimize it, but the answer was not in this video. though, you showed me where to look!! thanks so much!

  • Great work. Very needed this stuff. Thanks.

  • dude thanks you soo much you rock nice tutorial

  • Hi Bill. I have been using these settings for quite a while now...but uploads have 2 black bars down the side on the youtube player. Are there new settings for Sony Vegas to save for widescreen viewing on Youtube?

  • @brynmag Youtube's video player is now widescreen. If your video is not widescreen, it will show the black bars down the side. If your video is widescreen, use the settings I show in 'Sony Vegas Movie Studio Settings for HD wide screen at YouTube'

  • @guerillabill Thanks for the reply. The clips in question were made using Sony Vegas 6. Too old to fix? I am getting SV10 shortly.

  • @brynmag You can use pan & zoom to zoom into the clips to make them fit widescreen players. See my YouTube video, 'Convert video to wide format for YouTube - Sony Movie Studio'

  • @guerillabill Last question. What is the difference between Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 and Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 Production Suite?

  • @brynmag The production suite includes Sony Sound Forge and Sony Acid. Neither of which I find useful.

  • @guerillabill Ah I see. Is the version of Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 the same other than that? There is only about $10 difference in price on Amazon. (plus I can get the Bill Myers 101 Tips & Tricks for Sony Movie Studio as well)

  • @brynmag Yes, they are exactly the same version.

  • @guerillabill Ok Thats all I need to know. For only $10 extra I might as well get the Production Suite. Thanks Bill.

  • Thank you Bill, this has been a great help to me. Your instructions were very clear and easy to follow and you have a lovely voice.

  • im doing this on sony vegas movie studo hd 9.0 and the redering takes forever. how can i speed it up and still have the awsome settings.

  • @link9326 Render speed is directly related to the format of the source video, how closely they match the render settings, the speed of your computer, the number of cpu cores, the amount of ram, the length of the video, and the number of effects.

If rendering mov/mp4 divx or xvid video, expect render times to be tripled. For fast renders, use a computer with multicore cpu, lots of RAM, and fast hard drive with plenty of free space.

  • This is not making sense. If you render the video correctly, it still does not change the fact that it is still a .vf file in Vegas and I still do not know how to get a Vegas movie onto youtube since it will not accept .vf files.

  • @brettwinstead When you render the video, it creates a new video file with the filetype you choose (ie wmv). That would be the file you upload to YouTube, the one you just rendered.

The .vf file is a vegas project file, not a video file. You don't upload the .vf file to YouTUb.e

  • whats the difference between sony movie studio and then song vegas ?

  • @TheXcinerator Sony Movie Studio is the 'home' version of Sony Vegas Pro. Movie Studio 10 Platinum has the same layout, the same look, operates the same, and has about 95% of the features of Vegas Pro.

Big difference in price. Movie Studio Platinum 10 is under $50 at Amazon, while Vegas Pro is over $450.

  • @guerillabill so if i get the sony movie studio version will i still be able to render and upload game play ?

  • @TheXcinerator You can edit and render in Sony Movie Studio the same as in Sony Vegas Pro. The quality of the rendered video will be dependent on the quality of the original source video.

  • @guerillabill iv got a hauppauge hd pvr

  • @TheXcinerator You may have problems with the Hauppauge HD PVR video codec. Some people do report problems with that codec. Might have to convert the files to wmv or avi, depending on the version of Movie Studio you have.

  • @XxMelLovesYaxX Or if editing HD video, set the project properties to 720-P, and then render to wmv, using the 720-p preset.

  • THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I LOVE YOU.

  • Thank you billy bob this REALLY helped me i subbed

  • Can I render with this setup in premiere pro....?

  • Please help me: (my English was not good :)

i need to split a video into 3 parts and export them as 3 clips.

i split them into 3 but i dont know how to export them into 3 clips, when i try to export them. It will export as 1 clip and some black space between the clip.

  • @robin2531610 To export selected parts of a video, highlight the part you wish to export, choose 'render as', make sure 'render loop region only' is checked, enter a file name, and render.

  • @guerillabill Thank you very much, u r the best :D

  • @guerillabill Thanks a lot for the export selected parts tip too..

  • thanks man it worked a treat 10/10

  • Cheers!

  • When I do this will it take away from the quality of my work? I am currently shooting on a Canon T2i.

  • Video Size for Youtube:

    640x480 = 4:3

    640x360 = 16:9

    1280x720 = 1080p HD

  • Didnt workt for my, it made it much worse acutally :S. Maybe is something with the startup settings, can you telle me more about what to choose? You have so many screen options when slecting "NEW"

  • @4everkilla You may to look at the newer video I recently posted covering this. Find it with a YouTube search "Sony Vegas Movie Studio Settings for HD wide screen at YouTube"

  • can't configure internet/LAN value, it says it has to be CBR, but it is!

  • @iaureee You have to set both audio and video to CBR, as shown in the above video.

  • Thank you soooo much i liked you vid you rock

  • Thank you for this video!

What is the difference between 1M and 3M on the Internet/LAN?

  • @OuttaSynk You'll get slightly better quality at 3M setting.

  • Well thanks you very much for this video but can somebody please ansver me on this question:

When I render a video it always cuts sound second before video ends is there any fix for that or I am doing something wrong

  • Thanks alot! I subbed

  • Thanks a lot, the video comes out great! :)

  • Thank you so much for the video, I was having problems with the lengh of video verses youtube time requirement. I went back and check animation and it made all the difference in the world. Thanks so much.

  • I know this video is old, but if anyone sees this comment: Is there anyway to do this and still get HD? 'Cause when I do it renders in SD...

  • @statoose To get HD video, set your project properties to 720P, and edit your HD video. Then render to .wmv, using the 720P template.

  • @guerillabill Thank you very much.

  • Thanks! This was very helpful!

  • Thanks this very helpful!

  • Thanks, helped great with Sony Vegas as well.

  • how do i record my movie and upload it on youtube ? ps now i now thx to u i now which file i need to do but when i upload a video on youtube my video is just 1sec and its done .

    pls help me

  • @ykmaffia Make sure you don't have 'loop region only' checked on the render options page.

  • THANK YOU

  • Thank you man! One question... I have a 2 hour clip whick i wanted to speed it up to 3 minutes. So i dragged it and made it 5 minutes and now i render it but it says it needs 12 hours! Is that right?

  • @foadysfah Render time will depend on the speed of your computer, amount of RAM, type of file being rendered to.

Faster renders will be to wmv. Slowest renders will be to mov/mp4 and avi.

Rendering HD on a fast computer usually requires 2 minute of render time for 1 minute of video. On a slow computer, render time for HD could be 10 minutes of render for each minute of hd video.

  • Thank you so much! BECAUSE of THIS VIDEO, I can now convert videos from Sony Vegas Movie Studio to YouTube! You're a genius!! Thanks for the assistance!! :)

  • excuse me but when i click on an effect i want it doesnt make it a window like it ment to, now it just adds it next to the video and its all squashed how do i make it a window again? please help

  • @ZiPpYMontages1 See my youtube video 'find lost windows in Sony Movie Studio'

  • @guerillabill thanks heaps man you have earned a sub from me

  • Thanks for the help mate :D

  • @xDakotaaSnipes Be sure to uncheck 'loop region only' on the render page if it is enabled.

  • @guerillabill sir can you help me? i need to download or record youtube videos and then open the file in my sony vegas, i just dont know how.

  • @iam1in1 Search google for 'download youtube videos'

  • @guerillabill when i rendered my vid and watch it in windows player it is in a box, as in it is surrounded by black, the original vid wasnt like that, how do i make it so it can be viewed full screen with no widescreen lines and stuff

  • @13Machao Set the project properties to match your desired render settings. That will allow the preview window to show what the final video will look like and whether it will be letter boxed or not.

If your source material is not wide screen, but your render settings are wide screen, it will be letter boxed, unless you adjust the source video. See my YouTube video, 'Convert video to wide format for YouTube - Sony Movie Studio' for more details.

  • were you rendering avchd if not what are thre best settings to render already hd video?

  • @romo0012 Set the project properties to 720p first, then render to wmv, 720p

  • incredible! thank you so much!

quality is so good at such low file size, unlike default render which makes a 40 seconds video 300mb

  • Thank you so much i thought i would never get my videos onto youtube

  • SO MUCH THANKYOU

  • Yeesh! I got a nasty result with this tutorial. It took 90 minutes to convert a 7 minute AVI file and it ended up being 53MB big. Are you sure this tutorial applies for all formats?

  • @Glitcher2000 If it took 90 minutes to convert a 7 minute avi file, it usually means your avi file was really a divx or xvid video in a avi wrapper.

Divx and xvid are highly compressed video codecs, and rendering them to full frame avi can take hours, because so much information has been compressed out of the video.

divx and xvid videos are common with digital photo cameras, some video games, some analog video converters. Not really suitable for editing.

    Try rendering to wmv

  • @guerillabill Yes, it is an xvid video. I didn't know that Vegas needs to decompress the video from one format in order to compress into another. I tried recording as an uncompressed video, but the file size is 500MB for every minute of video! My computer isn't great and I'm short on disk space as it is. Instead, I tried converting the xvid into a 320 x 240 mp4 at 15fps. Conversion is three times faster and the file size is tiny. I'll manage with this.

  • Thanks for this :)

  • Short, precise and useful, as usual:)

  • file type windows media v9? i dont have that..

  • @9189erbear1195 Use wmv v11.

  • When I tried it said I should wait over 40 minutes to save a 9 minute long video. What am I doing wrong?

  • @JunkJunk60000 Render times are determined by the number of effects in the video, the length of the video, the chosen render format, the amount of RAM in your computer, and the amount of free disk space.

For faster render times, upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit, have at least 8 Gig of Ram, and at least 50 gig free hard drive space on the render drive.

  • Thank you... This was very helpfull.

  • thnx very much u get a sub!

  • I never knew any of this. It certainly would explain why I keep having those black bars with my video.

    Thanks.

  • mine is windows media 11 does it matter?

  • @BeAsTzFM Wmv 11 works great!

  • I did everything but and but when i try to play the video its just a 5 second long black screen. Help please.

  • @PaRanormalZz Make sure you haven't selected 'loop region' in the render settings. If you are working with mov or mp4 files, you may need to apply a patch that Sony provides.

  • Not changing the image size to 320x240 would probably explain why all the vids I upload have small black bars on the top and bottom. Is there a way to change the image size for authoring a DVD on DVD Architect? If so what should the image size be? All the DVD's I burned with my generic burner seem to have part of the picture cut off around the edges.

  • @JDBCreations For DVD, the source video should be shot at 720 X 480 for standard definition or 1920 X 1080 for HD. Shooting at lower sizes than that will produce low quality pixelated videos that don't fill the screen.

  • thank you, helped a lot.

  • this is brilliant...i was stuck for ages..thank you so much! you saved me! x

  • is windows media video 11 ok instead of 9?

  • @MuseicianX Yes, wmv 11 works great

  • I did everthing mentioned in the vidoe yet it still won't upload saying that it has an incorrect format. Please help.

  • @SlightlyInFlames Upload the .wmv file, not the vf file.

  • ur amazing

  • thanks mucho grande :D now i can upload and it doesn't say anything about the converting thing but now i try to upload and it cuts all of my video except a little part but i'll try to figure that out=]

  • hi, i have a question:

what's the difference in the diferent number of M's in the INTERNET/LAN box on the BIT RATE?

    thanks

  • @martinsafi Higher number means better quality

  • Hi, I have SV Movie Studio Platinum 9.0. I cannot get video on my rendered clips only audio. I deselect the loop only region before rendering and still audio only. Please tell me what can i do to possible resolve this issue. Do i need to re-install the program? I know others who use the default setting for rendering and have no problem with the video portion.

  • @reid9950 Sounds like you are using 'mov' or 'mp4' clips. These require a codec adjustment in Sony Movie Studio. See my YouTube video 'fix mp4 problems sony movie studio'

  • @guerillabill

Thank you for responding. I am not using either one of these formats or file types. I will look at your video.

I have tried so many format/file types

    1) Default: Audio: 64 Kbps, 44,100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo.

Video: 29.970 fps, 480x360, Quality VBR 90, WMV V11 Compression.

    2) 512 Kbps Video;Audio: 64 Kbps, 44,100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo.

    Video: 30 fps, 320x240, WMV V9 Compression.

Use this setting for high-quality video and near-CD-quality audio delivered over LAN or cable modem.

  • @reid9950 When the screen is black with a video clip, it usually means the codec needed to edit that clip is not on your computer. This is common with clips from video games, flip cameras, some cell phones, and analog video capture devices. Especially true with clips using divx or xvid codec.

Try a clip from a better video source, and you'll see that it works.

  • Hey. I have a question. I have sony vegas pro.9 so when I render the Save as type is Windows Media Video 11 (*.wmv). Just wanted to know if I should keep it like that since I dont have the same save as type as you

  • @xxxSaladChrispxxx Yes, if you have wmv 11, use that.

  • @guerillabill k. thanks alot! luved this, helped me out alot

  • ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty ty :D YOU HELPED ME SOOOOO MUCH THANKYOU YOU'RE SOOOOOOO COOL! (ty means thank you

  • hi mate, im having dramas with my preview screen, it seems to be lagging behind the timeline and doesnt keep up with the frame rate, im transfering gopro HD footage and HDV footage from my video camera, can you please help me

  • @bocareado Gopro HD footage is in .mov format, and requires a lot of CPU power and RAM to edit and preview in real time. If you don't have WIndows 7 64 bit, and at least 8 gig of RAM when editing HD mov files, you can expect to see the preview lag.

  • @guerillabill ok i thought i must have had the files messed up, when rendering for vimeo do you have a tutorial to get the best results from my gopro footage, im currently rendering as a m2t. thanks for your comment

  • I'm trying to get rid of the black lines on th sides of the video... i'm recording some video game footage but untill i make the game clip 16:9 and cut more than half the vid i can't cover the lines. is there any other way to do it ?

  • @jimbolooo You can either zoom into 16:9 or stretch the video. See details in my youtube video 'Convert video to wide format for YouTube - Sony Movie Studio '

  • @jimbolooo You can crop it out!

  • my video keeps skipping ? :L

  • @cupcakemintsss That is usually an issue when your preview windows settings are too high, and your computer CPU isn't able to keep up with the real time preview.

When you render the project, the video should be perfect.

  • @guerillabill no even if I render it :(

  • @cupcakemintsss If the video skips when you render it, is means something is wrong with the original source video. This usually is the case when you use an analog device to capture video from TV or convert from other format, and the frame rate is low.

  • thanks bro you are the king dude i never understood it and you just helped me do soo much :) every1 this guy is very very good at what he does

  • Dude, thanks allot! :D

Lately I've been having trouble with uploading video's to YouTube because they are too big. I uploaded one recently that was over 26MB, but after trying this out, the video was rendered at only 4MB!

  • Thank you for this, was very helpful!

  • wtf my video just went for one second and it took like a bit out of the middle of the movie and it went for one second whats hapening?

  • @Jozza567 Sounds like it just rendered the section you have selected. In that case, uncheck 'loop region only' in the render settings options.

  • @guerillabill

Many thanks keep getting same problem as above. just been using SVMS for four days now. Your Video are grate Bill :)

  • @guerillabill i have hd720p videos if i were to change the bitrate to 1mb in the custom settings would it affect the hd of my video?

sorry i dont have vegas yet so i cant test it out myself

  • @iRlazyGoat Lowering the bit rate always affects quality, but it may not be apparent depending on what you do with the video - YouTube, web site, DVD .. .

For HD settings for YouTube see my video 'Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD widescreen settings for YouTube '

  • On sony vegas how do you make it so that the video fills the entire screen on youtube?

  • @mattsarg To get widescreen on YouTube, you'll either need to start with wide screen video, and render to widescreen format. Or use pan & crop to make standard video widescreen. See my YouTube video 'Convert video to wide format for YouTube - Sony Movie Studio '

  • I have Vogas Movie Studio Platinum 9. My Custom settings don't look like tese and i dunno what to do. I don't even have Birtrate menu. The Audio menu is way more complicated and i can't see any :"CBR". What should I do?

  • @danutz1996 As shown in the video above, set the audio to CBR first, then the video settings will appear as shown in the video

  • @guerillabill Oh never mind, i have found out what to do. Thanks for fat replying. But with those settings it took me 2 hours for a 10 minutes video to render. Wasn't it supposed to be faster?

  • @danutz1996 Render speed will be dependent on the length of the video, the amount of effects used, the amount of RAM in your computer, the amount of hard drive space, the speed of your CPU, and the file format chosen.

If the source video is mov, mpeg4, or compressed with divx or xvid, render times could be tripled.

For fast renders for youtube, start with true avi or mts video, and render to .wmv

  • at costum.. when u klik it ude setting like video and audio

but what u have to select at the tab PROJECT?

    project settings?

    ore just best?

  • Cheers Bill helped a lot

  • Thanks Bill you are a wizard!

But I was wondering if you had some insight into why some shots are so choppy? Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks man. The vid is called Gravity Skateboards Wheelin'

  • hey Bill,

I tried rendering this way and for some reason only the last 20 seconds of a 1.5 min video renders. Any ideas?

    Thanks man.

  • @kevseadog On the render settings, uncheck 'loop region only', if it is checked.

  • how do u change the format because it sais on youtube when uploading cannot find format or w.e

  • @TWIZT3DZZ Use 'render as' and render the video. Then upload the rendered .wmv file to Youtube

  • Thank you so much! I've been dying to get full screen settings and this did the trick liking and subscribing =-)

  • what is the difference between the pro and movie studio version?

  • @bibcute The Pro and Movie Studio versions have the same screen layout, same workflow, most of the same features.

The Pro version has unlimited video and audio track, while Movie Studio has a limit of 4 video, 4 audio tracks.

The pro version has masking and other effects not found in Movie Studio.

The pro version has a retail price of over $500. Movie Studio Platinum is around $90.

  • Does these settings make the video full screen here? Because these black things on the sides annoy me lol

  • @CarbyForever If your video widescreen, don't use the above settings. Use the ones I show in 'widescreen video for youtube sony movie studio'.

If your video is not widescreen, you can convert to widescreen using the settings I show in 'Convert video to wide format for YouTube - Sony Movie Studio'

  • @guerillabill ok thanks a lot!

  • Thanks bro

  • @ guerillabill thanks :)

  • when i render it, it repeats the same video 3x what should i do?

  • @SaweetMovies Uncheck 'loop region only' in the render settings box.

  • @SaweetMovies when you click render go to the bottom and uncheck the thing that says something about the loop

  • hi i have Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9.0 and i want to know what the settings for HD video is as i have a HD camera. yes it comes up as widescreen but it has HQ instead of HD. can you help?

  • @leonshayne If you have Sony Movie Studio platinum, you can render to HD. See settings in my YouTube video 'Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD widescreen settings for YouTube '

  • @TheWiseRat22 see my YouTube video, 'Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD widescreen settings for YouTube'

  • @TheWiseRat22 The settings are for 4:3. For 16:9, see my other videos

  • YOU´RE SO AWESOME, THANK YOU!! first one video from 64 gig is now 708 kb!!

  • i rendered my video but when i played it.. it is blank and you only hear the audio cud u please help thanks

  • You've been such a BIG help to me. I have SOOO MANY problems with V. Studio but you've helped relieve A LOT of stress, lol. Thanks, Bill

  • very helpful 5 stars :)

  • I have this set up on my Sony Vegas and it used to work great, but now for some reasons I get dropped frames when I render. The original avi is fine. Is it my camera or something I need to change in Sony? You can see my latest video how choppy and bad it looks.

  • @destroyahdes Generally dropped frames during rendering means the source video wasn't full frame rate. That happens with video from still camera, video games, flip cameras and highly compressed mp4 or mov videos

  • @guerillabill Oh that's annoying. It is a cheap still camera. That's too bad. Then I need to find a better camera. Thanks.

  • thanks man
