I am a little curious about riot police. Where do they come from? Are they shipped in from other places? What do they do when there is no protest to "protect and serve? Do they have other day jobs while they aren't intimidating people? One other question, how could any human being want a job like that?

There was no riot going on here. This was on the second day of the RNC and it was the end of the Poor People's March. The march had been completely peaceful despite repeated attacks by the police in which they pulled peaceful protesters out of the march and charged them with felonies, shot them at close range with rubber bullets, and tased them. I think the police did a good job clearing the street for right of way. These people are yelling, "...peaceful protest", but they are blocking a street, and emergency vehicles cannot get in, in that case. Public safety is only slightly more important than the freedom to assemble. I'm sure this wouldn't have happened, if these people peaceably assembled in a park just on the sidewalks.

I actually looked it up and in my country tear gas was used four times from year 1990 and last time it was on CzechTek 2003 an illegal tekno festival. And for example Swiss police doesn't use tear gas at all.

I've heard from several different sources the cops kept tear gassing them and telling them to leave but no one would tell them where to go. So they would get tear gassed and then go the wrong way and get tear gassed again. So On top of not knowing where to go just imagine how easy it would be to see with tear gas in your eyes. I keep hearing "we're a peaceful protest." True, mostly. But it is a peacful protest off route, and beyond the expiration time of the permit, making it an illegal gathering, interfering with people trying to get to and from work, and conduct their daily lives. When SMALL factions of the protest break things, it needs to be stopped BEFORE mob mentality causes it to become bigger. Evidenced by the fact that those causing damage are hidden, intentionally, by the crowd, and get braver with time.
You follow the rules, and the police follow you around and protect you from those that disagree with you and protect you from traffic. When the permit expires, or you leave the route filed, and start interfering with bystanders trying to live their lives, and you suddenly are breaking law. Now you get treated as such. When instructions to disband get ignored, you get sprayed. You don't want to get sprayed, flashbanged, and herded like animals, follow the rules. It's a simple concept.

I think the police did a good job clearing the street for right of way. These people are yelling, "...peaceful protest", but they are blocking a street, and emergency vehicles cannot get in, in that case. Public safety is only slightly more important than the freedom to assemble. I'm sure this wouldn't have happened, if these people peaceably assembled in a park just on the sidewalks.

Same thing happened to me on Halloween in Madison. Handful of jerks want to cause a riot & ruin a peaceful gathering. Tear gas used to disperse the crowd. Understand, a mob can quickly turn into a riot if the situation is not handled aggressively. In 1960's 34 people died in an LA riot & 43 people died in a Detroit riot. But in a violent Chicago riot, police were ordered to be much more aggressive & casualties were greatly reduced as a result. Riots are much more dangerous than police & tear gas

thank you NRA, that had to be said. we verbally told everyone to leave multiple times before deploying chemical agents. also, i keep reading that it was tear gas but to the best of my knowledge it was not tear gas. it was CS gas which has similar effects but will not actually harm you. i have been subjected to it for extended periods of time and the only effect it had on me was making my eyes water and seriously clearing out my sinuses.

We were there in support of the local law enforcement. We worked with them but not as the official law enforcement ourselves. As far as it being minor, we were there 24/7 so minor or major we were around.

I've heard from several different sources the cops kept tear gassing them and telling them to leave but no one would tell them where to go. So they would get tear gassed and then go the wrong way and get tear gassed again. So On top of not knowing where to go just imagine how easy it would be to see with tear gas in your eyes. oh my GOD this chick does not do well under pressure and she should definitely NOT have a microphone in her hand. I have been tear gassed in Rome when all the streets were blocked off from Termini to Circo Massimo. Romans marched in the streets protesting GW Bush's meeting with the Pope in the summer of '04 and it tastes nasty and it's scary but not that scary. You need to be ready for this sort of thing if you head into the thick of it. And it's only gonna get worse come November.

I was there every day, every protest, in St. Paul and at the Rage concert. The only people who deserved this treatment totally deserved it. I have the utmost respect for the St. Paul police, they did an amazing job. Too many people were dead set on provoking this type of response.

fuck the police..i was on the other side of the line and poeple were running with their hands up and they were still sprayin pepper spray like it was a joke to them..if i was a judge..ill sentence those bastards to prison and let all the poeple file charges against them for doin that kind of shit. they got OUT OF HAND and WENT OVERBOARD. they broke our 1st ammendment, and freedom of speech.

Photographers were right next to the police recording the whole thing.

I live in the same country of this convention, and WORD. The authority here are the real terrorists. City police are the biggest assholes in the USA. I keep hearing "we're a peaceful protest." True, mostly. But it is a peacful protest off route, and beyond the expiration time of the permit, making it an illegal gathering, interfering with people trying to get to and from work, and conduct their daily lives. When SMALL factions of the protest break things, it needs to be stopped BEFORE mob mentality causes it to become bigger. Evidenced by the fact that those causing damage are hidden, intentionally, by the crowd, and get braver with time.

You follow the rules, and the police follow you around and protect you from those that disagree with you and protect you from traffic. When the permit expires, or you leave the route filed, and start interfering with bystanders trying to live their lives, and you suddenly are breaking law. Now you get treated as such. When instructions to disband get ignored, you get sprayed. You don't want to get sprayed, flashbanged, and herded like animals, follow the rules. It's a simple concept.

Let's see... police blocked traffic all day every day, all week, allowing protestors to move about almost at will, only trying to keep them somewhat CLOSE to the route filed in their permit - except where protestors smashed windows and slashed tires - until anarchists strted breaking things and until the permit expired...
