BRAVO! In this later version you play with more sensitivity, more expression and much much better dynamics. Everybody make mistakes playing live. This piece should not be a track meet and about how fast and how loud it can be played. It's Jung Lin's version that stands out, not Lugansky's.

Somehow I cant decide which video to like better: Although the second attempt (this video) sounds way more defined, the first one evokes more feeling and has more power, that is for me.
I agree, the original vid has more power and feeling. I have watched the original over 20 times and it nearly brings me to tears--I know, at the age of 55, I will never ever play like this.
I agree, much more expressive than Lugansky, and who cares about wrong notes, I prefer your version Cambry, music should be played with feelings and a few imperfection, because imperfection makes it even more beautiful (it adds one precious thing: desire).
I've played this in concert and it is very difficult. Who cares about a few wrong notes. Even Rachmaninoff hit a few clunkers in some of his recordings. Cambry plays with a lot of emotional depth and understanding of the piece. Bravo!
@simonchipmunk And who are you to say that Luganskys version is robotic. Lugansky is one the best pianists of our times, and everyone knows that he conqures this piece. He has over a 100 thousand views on that one video....he must be doing SOMETHING right.
my only criticism towards your version is that you need to mellow down, Rachmaninoff is very bold but still keeps his composure. It feels like you are rushing instead of enjoying the music. I listened to Lugansky and he does play it very very well, but I dont agree that its how its supposed to be played only Rachmaninoff himself can tell you that. There is actually a CD where Rachmaninoff plays his own music, not sure if this piece is there though.
after listening to it again i have to agree with Brackhmmarr there is too much pedal. idk about the sound because it could be the camera. But I do have to say that a pianist can interpret a piece however he wants so i dont count your style of playing an issue.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
what on earth did you do to this piece..?? cambry, i would definitely listen to Lugansky's version.. thats how its supposed to be played... too many wrong notes on the last 3 pages...
listening to lugansky's version of the piece won't correct wrong notes, i've listened to both versions a million times and i'm nowhere near getting those last 3 pages perfect! There's no one way a piece is 'supposed' to be played - this one is more expressive wile Lugansky is more technical, personally i'd prefer a mix of the two :) This piece is so hard i envy cambry for getting so many of the notes right!
@natattack4 I wouldn't say this is more expressive. It is just slower in parts. Slower doesn't necessarily equate to more expressive, and I think in this case it simply equates to an inferior ability. It is an OK rendition, but has quite a lot of harsh wrong notes and the speed of my favourite section at 1:04 is just too slow to actually hear the melody properly, and it comes out wrong in my opinion. Sounds like it's being dragged along rather than controlled.
AHHHH You need to make a video of you playing this song slow and up close. I would LOVE to learn it, but It takes me ages to read music. I still do all that F-A-C-E buisness after playing for...12 years. I just get by on my ear... But this song is too tough for that. So... I would be SUPER appreciative if you would post a slow version! Im absolutely in love with this piece.
I learned to like this particular Rachmaninov's piece much thru Camry's older and a bit 'hard' interpretation. I listened others play the same work - I found it still the best. Now that he's released a new recording I find it even better - more matured and softer, still wild. It's excellent to my ears although I'm not a specialist. Some music pieces and some interpretations just hit - this has hit me hard!
INCREDIBLE INTERPRETATION!!!.. I believe it conveis ALL the spirit Rachmanninoff would want in this piece, and it has a very clear sound... agressive and sensitive at the same time.. your playing reminds me of Horowitz, CONGRATZ!!!!!!!!!!!
very good. There are two ways to interpret this piece. The sensitive way or the aggressive way. You seem to take the sensitive way. personally I prefer the aggressive way like Berman's, his has so much passion and it is so moving.
Technically fantastic and better than a year ago. It takes a lot of years and polish to get that "Rac" sound. Lugansky is the living master of this piece
It's just to comparise it with everyone else playing this song. I think reactions as those are better than reacties just as 'fun' or 'nice'. But hey, that's my opinion :).
to finish it off, i'd like to say to watch the dynamics, not playing mezzo forte or even mezzo piano where it clearly says fortissimo! Pour out your emotion into this by the bucketful and maybe in the beginning, try adding a little twist. In the very beginning, start out mp and then gradually make a huge crescendo to an F (not as loud as the rest of the piece but still loud, you need room to grow!) at the final B to EG and keep it until you decrescendo until your right hand joins the 16h notes.
Overall, I liked the brought out left hand melody when it was needed, it stood out over the clutter and the loud right hand. I thought your 2:17 and your 2:35ish jump between the b and the G was pretty good, although if I may, i'd like to give you a tip and say that if you look at the keyboard while making the jump, you'll always mess up. Trust yourself and your memory to make the leap and don't look at the keyboard and do it. It's much more professional that way.
I'd like to say that I prefer this much better than the other! The other one was too wild and amateurish; this is much more refined. My only criticisms would probably have to be that this piece is a dynamic piece! This should be able to move me and make me give a standing ovation! Many times, there is no difference between Sforzando and mezzo forte etc. Around 1:45, it's Fortississimo! I there's barely a difference between the beginning forte! I think i'l make another comment after this
I prefer the another version, but this is so good too.The another version had a special and strong sound, relaxed tempo. This is a bit slower. But good job too.
I really enjoy reading the responses to the foolish comments in your channel, like one who said that your piano was electric, the another one who said that you played bad and he had your video in his favourites, etc.
I would like you could upload the Rachmaninov musical moment nº6 too.
I really like your interpretation, it's passionate and fairly original. However, I got the feeling that near the end the technicalities of the piece were limiting the pace at which you played it? Regardless of why, I think it could be improved by a faster playing (while maintaining your beautifully soft touch with the melody), and that way you might get that "sonorous" element in the left hand that someone rightly attributed to Lugansky.
Huge improvement on the first vid! Better technical mastery of the piece and more accentuation of key notes. Well done! My favourite version is on Justin James Piano V.1 CD
Everyone in prison should be given daily access to a piano keyboard, and a monthly try at an escape door with a piano keyboard attached to it. All they have to do to open the door to get out of prison is sit down and play Cambry's piece as the entry code! This would: A) Keep them in prison for most of their sentences, and B) Give them something really healthy and positive to do while they're in there, making them better people when they get out. Cambry is a great positive role model!
Good point. Murderers, pedophiles, etc. would have to play 12 complex pieces back-to- back, 3 times as fast as Cambry, without error, 3650 days in a row!
Another good point. The keyboard would have to be coated with soft rubber, impossible to disassemble, and securely attached to a bracket on the prison cell wall, for safety.
(or maybe they could just slide a baby grand piano up to the cell and let the prisoner reach through the bars to practice, while a guard points an M-16 at his or her head, to set the mood for relaxed musical interpretation) :)
starting on the 2nd page around 0:45. other than that it's quite good ;D
however, there's lots of times where the song itself loses it's energy and it's just notes. Try to keep the energy alive and you've got a stunning performance!
My teacher usually lecture to my fingers .She said they are too lazy .
Yesterday morning I thought she nearly to say "Get out !" Also this "moment musical No.4" I must do something let her give me a break. What can I do ?
Much better than your first recording of it! Now you dominate the piece and you pay more attention to the dynamics and the phrasing. I know it's also due to better recording equipment, but it's obvious that you improved quite a bit. congrats!
PianoPlaya, to make one thing sure: your version of this piece is beautiful and you did a very good job!
It is my personal opinion (=comment) that clothes play a role in videos where piano music is played. A simple, black suit would make this video even more better (in my opinion).
What would say if Rubinstein, Barenboim, Kissin etc. would wear a jersey?^^
And anyway, calm down. You are making a very aggressive, unbalanced impression!!
I'm pretty sure when they were in school (like I am here), they didn't wear a black suit in between classes. I am sure you don't either, if you do you will be very much out of place.
Lol- he wasn't even being aggressive nor was he appearing unbalanced. He was practicing for god's sake, why in the hell would he wear a suit? If you don't like what he was wearing, close your eyes and enjoy the music.
My opinion of someone's playing is independent of the player's clothes, but not my opinion of someone's piano video And I think that combination of elegant classical music and informal clothing is unfortunate, unless PianoPlaya123 wanted this to be especially hilarious - which I don't suspect.
@XianSheng123 Oh OK I see where the disagreement comes from. I thought when he said he had two hours to record ten pieces that he meant AUDIO recordings, in which case the video is really just for fun.
Of course my equipment is worse. I didn't want to offend you, my comment is supposed to make your future videos better. Anyway, I am of the opinion that there are more suitable clothes for pieces like that.
One more thing: You used an electric camera as well. :-)
"More suitable clothes for pieces like that" ... I didn't know the pieces came with clothes or that Rachmaninoff wrote "White Suit" in the score to this piece and ummm of course my camera is electric, what is the other option? Solar powered clean energy producing HD cameras?
you crack me up with your responses to dingbats. You are, by far, one of the best pianists ive seen. I think the only person i can compare to you is Marina (lovesmusic), im sure youve seen her vids. Youre amazing, and inspiring.
I love it! There's a lot more passion than Lugansky's rendition. I would say that occasionally, the melody gets lost, but that's only a rare occurence.
well this is of course not for a concert stage, rather amateurish, I guess the performer himself knows this pretty well ;-) There are of course much better preformances on youtube
yes but the people who practice for the concert stage tend to end up as nostalgic, self-loving, chavunistic, inflated, obsessive, eagertistic, stuck up, concieted and pompous people anyway so I'm sure Cambry would rather be in the position he is :)
There's a nice comment in your guestbook about the approapriate job for you being sucking a dick, I wonder why you comment on music videos instead? ;-)
I truly hope you are not referring to the chaimovich interpretation you favorited as a "much better interpretation" if so well.....sorry for you. This was played with more sensibility than many concert pianist. There are mistakes, and i assume the "rather amateurishness" your talking about comes from those. This interpretation, without the mistakes, beats any other ive seen. The lighter left hand and overall softer dynamics wins against the noisy, quasi-hysterical interpretation of others
I've been playing about 8 years and I'm working on this piece right now. It's so much fun to play, except I barely have an octave reach so it's a challenge to negotiate some of the passages. You have amazing technique and I love your interpretation. Very romantic in feel. :)
That was the best recording of this piece I have seen on Youtube, much better than Lugansky's interpretation. I'm TRYING to learn it, but it's pretty hard seeing as I'm 14 and my hands are still a bit small.
By the way can I ask how you play the sections at 0:44 and 2:53 and bring out the octaves in the right hand? I CAN'T DO IT!
Still, an amazing interpretation, the piece sounds really impressive, especially on that piano.
You have the ultimate toush+soul to bring a piece to life -rarely touched by most pianist. I love your interpretations. All the authors must be proud. I am sure Liszt would have loved you greatly !!!
Wow. You're a genius. But... This piece is usually played with much more stress, loudly, with unbelievable expression. I think you're too calm in this piece. 'Cause Rechmainov is a Russian composer, he has one of the greatest feeling expressions in the world music. Or don't ya feel the madness inside this musical moment? In a couple of months I wil upload my version... However, you're great! 5/5.
Are you saying that because Rachmaninov is Russian he has more emotion than others? If so, i think that is pretty stereotypical. I am Russian, does that mean I have more emotion than others who are not Russian? Mozart and Beethoven were not Russian but they showed great emotion.
I think what he is basing his opinion on is the fact that Russia is perceived as generally a tougher environment (harsh weather, politics etc..) than other ones, though this isn't completely correct.
I suspected that the supposed dynamic problems of the other performance were due to the tight accoustics and the instrument, and I was correct. This is an excellent performance, and the pianist is in complete control (unlike many supposed concert artists who are all dazzle and noise). Well done.
yo dawg that's a sick ass beat is that biggie?

hi Cambry,U know pogorelich plays this one really nice!
I was wondering if I could challenge u to put a beethoven sonata on u tube?
an easy sonat ,for example the pastoral,
or maybe a simple scarlatti sonata or mozzart ,
lets see how good is ur sound and quality of legato, does ur piano sing?!
or y not a bach suite, would u be able to play polyphonic music?can u produce a different colour between the alto and the suprano line?!
by the way dont ask me to it because OF hand injury.
many thanks

I think this guy's interpretation is very fine. I liked it. But if it is a little faster, it will be better.
doshishasg 3 years ago 2
I really like your interpretation, it's passionate and fairly original. However, I got the feeling that near the end the technicalities of the piece were limiting the pace at which you played it? Regardless of why, I think it could be improved by a faster playing (while maintaining your beautifully soft touch with the melody), and that way you might get that "sonorous" element in the left hand that someone rightly attributed to Lugansky.
Nooodle7 3 years ago
Its almost perfect! Just i felt the left hand could be a bit more sonorous, check Luganskys version.
But then again, it may just be the piano. Still really good rendition of this haunting piece :)

Cambry is a great positive role model!

interesting idea.....LOL

even the people in there for murder or crimes against humanity?
AlfieJ06 3 years ago
I dont think it would be too healthy and interesting to try and play that piece if you are a beginner. They may end up tearing their hair OUT!
quiksilver87 3 years ago
Good point. Murderers, pedophiles, etc. would have to play 12 complex pieces back-to- back, 3 times as fast as Cambry, without error, 3650 days in a row!
Lots of luck with that! :)
bestideas 3 years ago
the argument against that would be that the prisoners might use the keyboard as weapon. Maybe for the prisoners with good behavior.
SpaceAnarchist 3 years ago
Another good point. The keyboard would have to be coated with soft rubber, impossible to disassemble, and securely attached to a bracket on the prison cell wall, for safety.
(or maybe they could just slide a baby grand piano up to the cell and let the prisoner reach through the bars to practice, while a guard points an M-16 at his or her head, to set the mood for relaxed musical interpretation) :)
bestideas 3 years ago
the left hand melody should be louder
starting on the 2nd page around 0:45. other than that it's quite good ;D
however, there's lots of times where the song itself loses it's energy and it's just notes. Try to keep the energy alive and you've got a stunning performance!

Much better than your first recording of it! Now you dominate the piece and you pay more attention to the dynamics and the phrasing. I know it's also due to better recording equipment, but it's obvious that you improved quite a bit. congrats!

oh wow, i love this interpretation! this and Lugansky's! i dunno how you do it but its taking me forever to get through it. any practice tips?

xshredgex 3 years ago 2
PianoPlaya, to make one thing sure: your version of this piece is beautiful and you did a very good job!
It is my personal opinion (=comment) that clothes play a role in videos where piano music is played. A simple, black suit would make this video even more better (in my opinion).
What would say if Rubinstein, Barenboim, Kissin etc. would wear a jersey?^^
And anyway, calm down. You are making a very aggressive, unbalanced impression!!
XianSheng123 3 years ago
I'm pretty sure when they were in school (like I am here), they didn't wear a black suit in between classes. I am sure you don't either, if you do you will be very much out of place.
PianoPlaya123 3 years ago
Lol- he wasn't even being aggressive nor was he appearing unbalanced. He was practicing for god's sake, why in the hell would he wear a suit? If you don't like what he was wearing, close your eyes and enjoy the music.
IntelInside2020 3 years ago
@XianSheng123 If your opinion of someone's playing is affected by their clothes, then there's a problem.
And the problem is not the clothing he's wearing.
MithraMusic 1 year ago
My opinion of someone's playing is independent of the player's clothes, but not my opinion of someone's piano video And I think that combination of elegant classical music and informal clothing is unfortunate, unless PianoPlaya123 wanted this to be especially hilarious - which I don't suspect.
XianSheng123 1 year ago
@XianSheng123 I think it's a casual video of him comfortably practicing a piece, not a concert-house performance. It kind of gives the video charm.
MithraMusic 1 year ago
@MithraMusic I don't think so because it says above: "I had 2 hours to record 10 pieces and this was one of them."
And it is certainly rays out charme - but charme is not fitting into the musical context here.
XianSheng123 1 year ago
@XianSheng123 Oh OK I see where the disagreement comes from. I thought when he said he had two hours to record ten pieces that he meant AUDIO recordings, in which case the video is really just for fun.
MithraMusic 1 year ago
@XianSheng123 What's so wrong with wearing a jersey and playing piano you stupid ass!!! FUCK THE BLACK SUIT. GET A LIFE!

Like your electronic keyboard, camera, and microphone to your vids?
PianoPlaya123 3 years ago
Of course my equipment is worse. I didn't want to offend you, my comment is supposed to make your future videos better. Anyway, I am of the opinion that there are more suitable clothes for pieces like that.
One more thing: You used an electric camera as well. :-)
XianSheng123 3 years ago
"More suitable clothes for pieces like that" ... I didn't know the pieces came with clothes or that Rachmaninoff wrote "White Suit" in the score to this piece and ummm of course my camera is electric, what is the other option? Solar powered clean energy producing HD cameras?
PianoPlaya123 3 years ago
Don't mind that guy. You're more talented than him, so the only thing he can bitch about is your clothes. What a goddamned hater!!!

It's beautiful music, and he plays it beautifully. Why does it matter what he's wearing?
jemcneill 3 years ago 4
I love it! There's a lot more passion than Lugansky's rendition. I would say that occasionally, the melody gets lost, but that's only a rare occurence.

thanks Cambry ¡¡
Adrielpianomusic 3 years ago
well this is of course not for a concert stage, rather amateurish, I guess the performer himself knows this pretty well ;-) There are of course much better preformances on youtube
003fatalerror 3 years ago
yes but the people who practice for the concert stage tend to end up as nostalgic, self-loving, chavunistic, inflated, obsessive, eagertistic, stuck up, concieted and pompous people anyway so I'm sure Cambry would rather be in the position he is :)

you are an idiot. I bet if cambry had put this as a sound recording and slapped horowitz name across it you would have said "brilliant!".
SolarJakee 3 years ago
There's a nice comment in your guestbook about the approapriate job for you being sucking a dick, I wonder why you comment on music videos instead? ;-)
003fatalerror 3 years ago

masterofmyfate31 3 years ago
That was the best recording of this piece I have seen on Youtube, much better than Lugansky's interpretation. I'm TRYING to learn it, but it's pretty hard seeing as I'm 14 and my hands are still a bit small.
By the way can I ask how you play the sections at 0:44 and 2:53 and bring out the octaves in the right hand? I CAN'T DO IT!
Still, an amazing interpretation, the piece sounds really impressive, especially on that piano.
Nickhowley123 3 years ago
You have the ultimate toush+soul to bring a piece to life -rarely touched by most pianist. I love your interpretations. All the authors must be proud. I am sure Liszt would have loved you greatly !!!

Wow. You're a genius. But... This piece is usually played with much more stress, loudly, with unbelievable expression. I think you're too calm in this piece. 'Cause Rechmainov is a Russian composer, he has one of the greatest feeling expressions in the world music. Or don't ya feel the madness inside this musical moment? In a couple of months I wil upload my version... However, you're great! 5/5.
f1f1s 4 years ago 2
Are you saying that because Rachmaninov is Russian he has more emotion than others? If so, i think that is pretty stereotypical. I am Russian, does that mean I have more emotion than others who are not Russian? Mozart and Beethoven were not Russian but they showed great emotion.
dageek2 3 years ago
OK, you are a Russian, that's all. What's else? Play Rachmaninoff at first, and say something after.
mmmasa2004 3 years ago
I think what he is basing his opinion on is the fact that Russia is perceived as generally a tougher environment (harsh weather, politics etc..) than other ones, though this isn't completely correct.

I suspected that the supposed dynamic problems of the other performance were due to the tight accoustics and the instrument, and I was correct. This is an excellent performance, and the pianist is in complete control (unlike many supposed concert artists who are all dazzle and noise). Well done.
