I thought I had a deffective unit, but now it's clear that all Zx1's have the same deffect: heavy Screen Tearing when you move the camera! The encoder just isn't fast enough!
"Screen tearing" occurs during video motion, creating a torn look as edges of objects (such as a wall or a tree) fail to line up. Look at wikipedia for more info, it'll become evident. It ruins all footage from this cam.
Stay away from this cam if possible. All video tests in youtube show this deffect. I'm returning mine.
Just take a look youtube videos where the background is moving horizontally. It is pretty evident in the "Kodak ZX1 Test HD Video Nissan GTR", "Obsessable video review of the Kodak Zx1 ", and few others. You just haven't noticed it yet, which is good for you :-) I'm working on finding if reencoding the video can resolve the problem, as the h264 video information of Zx1 shows some idiosyncrasies (frame tripling? why in heavens?). Maybe it's only a software/firmware problem after all! let's hope!
@loudenvier I think I may have saw one in that Obsessable video, but I dunno. I'm still thinking its a good camcorder unless you want to make a feature film with it. Good luck with whatever problems you have with it.
@Jokenintendo I'm almost convinced it is a software/encoding problem. Once I experiment with all possible permutations :-) I'll make a post review of the cam with the possible workarounds for everyone! (now, screen tearing effects are not noticeable to everyone, you have to have a keen eye to spot that, but once you see it is almost unbearable!!! :-))
@loudenvier hi this could be a computer problem not from the camera.. your pc is not in syncronsation with your monitor and is producing tear on the video.. checkif you have vsync activated and if there isint any other for video acceleration o your codecs dont have any special options with this. I have this problem when playing dvds on another computer and with vsync solves the problem. you usualy see this with very fast paced games if vsync isint activated. at least i do not see this on any vid
@nicotrial It is possible. I'm experimenting with different encodings and I'm also playing it on external hardware (like the WD TV player). What I noticed is that to play 60 fps video without hardware decoding help you have to have a very powerful machine... but since youtube drops all videos to 30 fps this isn't a problem at all, so tearing in youtube videos may be indicative of an encoding problem. I'll update my comments with my findings.
i bought this on ebay havent come in yet

The JVC FM1 has a 720p 50fps mode
