What goes for the Chinese communities in North America is largely true for many other Asian groups to a degree such as Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino, Japanese, ect...
The seperation between Asian culture and the population of America as a whole has lead to cultural disconnects. To be a part of American culture and society you need to actually become a part of American society, and living in Chinatown of some major city, speaking cantonese, and only interacting with other Asians does not work.
There is not alot of Asian influence in Hollywood and not alot of Asian television shows on American network TV because in general Asian people tend to live in very isolated pockets of society in America. Unlike African Americans or Latinos a Chinese person is going to have video stores full of movies from Hong Kong, they have areas of the city where traditional style Cantonese food exists and that is what they eat. And most Chinese speak Cantonese or Mandarin solely in their day to day life.

I've lived in Southern California all my life and I can tell you that most areas with a large concentration of Asian-Americans have a significant percentage of residents from other races, White, Hispanic, etc. And from what I can attest there is PLENTY of interaction between Asians and members of other races. I HATE it when white or other races generalise "Asian" or "Asia" to ONE country.aka china! i'm korean and they say it in a negative way to me. i was clubbing with my white friends and a guy yelling:HEY NIHAO! & they laughed away. my teacher said to me: nihao. my friends still think im chinese.if an asian mistakens an american for a european.they would get pissed cuz they can differentiate themselves from other white races & nationalities. yet they cant do that for asians.

@jennyrotaryexchange1 I had that happen to me too many times to even get up the energy to be pissed anymore. I just brush them off as being ignorant and juvenile. I did hate that it made me feel insecure about being Asian, having different bone/facial structures, and be ashamed to be in public with my parents speaking Korean. So glad am I, to have outgrown that (not 100%, but mostly). I get annoyed when they ask me if I am from North Korea, or the South.

My race is supposed to be Asian but there are people who say, "they're not even Asian, they're Pacific Islanders!" which I believe isn't racism but then comes the confusion that if it's not racism then what is it? What goes for the Chinese communities in North America is largely true for many other Asian groups to a degree such as Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino, Japanese, ect...
The seperation between Asian culture and the population of America as a whole has lead to cultural disconnects. To be a part of American culture and society you need to actually become a part of American society, and living in Chinatown of some major city, speaking cantonese, and only interacting with other Asians does not work.

There is not alot of Asian influence in Hollywood and not alot of Asian television shows on American network TV because in general Asian people tend to live in very isolated pockets of society in America. Unlike African Americans or Latinos a Chinese person is going to have video stores full of movies from Hong Kong, they have areas of the city where traditional style Cantonese food exists and that is what they eat. And most Chinese speak Cantonese or Mandarin solely in their day to day life.

I've lived in Southern California all my life and I can tell you that most areas with a large concentration of Asian-Americans have a significant percentage of residents from other races, White, Hispanic, etc. And from what I can attest there is PLENTY of interaction between Asians and members of other races. And those Asians who speak fluent English and interact with other groups are not a novelty but number in the MILLIONS.

Margaret Cho does have a point, but I think even most Asians would agree that she's a lot angrier than any Asian in this country has a reason to be. She's trying to equate the Korean experience with the black experience and it's a just a weak argument.
Personally, I think her anger issues stem LESS from being Korean and more from her perception of being made to feel fat and unattractive (hence her feminsist stance on "patriarchy". She's too narcissistic to ever admit that, though.
