Cameron would have been a neat place to live and railfan in the 80s/early 90s when the trains had more variety. Today, both railroads there are all BNSF.
The merger was that ATSF and BN couldn't beat Up and BN and both railroads where at the same situation! So they said hey we need a railroad to compete with UP in the west
Funny how Burlington Northern was a railway made up of mergers. Northern Pacific, Central Pacific, and the Burlington Route if I am right, made up Burlington Northern. Interesting how they merged with another railway. I prefer Cascade Green but, nonetheless...
Also Great Northern, and Central Pacific was merged into the Southern Pacific in the 1880s (which has now been absorbed into the Union Pacific). But yes, the class one railroads are made up of other extinct railroads.
railroad mergers have been going on since railroads began to operate..the NC&STL merged with the L&N..the L&N bought the MONON and CENTRAL & EASTERN ILLINOIS then merged with the SCL who merged with the C&O to form CSX..this started back in the 60's..soon there will only be one maybe two railroads left..but they will be strong as they have learned how to overcome the loss of revenue from interstate trucking..its called intermodal.they bought the trucking companies also. the strong survive.
To make the second largest railroad network. BNSF is still the second largest network even though it is a merger of ATSF and BN. UP now has the trackage over the ATSF mainline to Hutchison KS and some in Cajon Pass. BNSF should restore some FP45s and F7s for passenger specials. Some may go into H3. UP is the largest railroad network
BN did not buy out the ATSF; it was a pretty even merger, and in fact many called it the "Big New Santa Fe" after the merger. Both RR's were struggling financially and neither could have survived to the present day without the merger. That said, BNSF does tend to favor the "Great Northern" heritage in its current paint scheme. We don't have to like that they merged, but it has created a strong, prosperous railroad.
@BNSF9250 Well I'm sure there are many reasons. Management certainly played a role. I don't know about BN so much, but I understand the Santa Fe was having all kinds of problems with their management in the early 90's years leading up to the merger. Inefficient operations plagued the RR's during that period, not just BN and ATSF, but UP, SP, and CNW as well. The need for more efficient operations along with the need to strengthen the industry was certainly a catalyst for the mergers.
@TPWEMDRAILFAN Not sure where you're getting that idea from. The pumpkin scheme emphasizes the Great Northern heritage, which was the predecessor road to BN. The only thing SF about the new BNSF scheme is the cigar stripes on the top and bottom of the locomotive. They did away with the Warbonnet-heritage cigar band on the nose, which has all but eliminated any of the SF heritage from the new BNSF image.
No the merger was mostly or if not all ATSF's idea. They were slipping, not making money, and knew they were gonna merge w/ someone. Then w/ no one to turn to they MERGED w/ BN. So the merger was ATSF idea.
I want to thank all of the you tubers across Ameriva for providing such dynamic videos of all of those freight trains, I live in Augusta ,Kansas . two blocks away fron the main BNSF main line from Chicago to Los Angeles. I almost live at our train station!! I do not have a video camera and it would take a lot of practice to get the ki8nd of videos you people do. Congratulations fron Augsta Kansas railfan
Love the video, and the classic power, just wish the angles on some of the scenes was shot properly instead of nose-diving as I call em, regardless, you won't be disappointed!
Regardless I know everyone misses their railroad,my grandfather still misses his GN. The BNSF merger has proven to be a GREAT success,a perfect marriage if you will. I miss the BN as much as I miss the ATSF AND THE CNW,and the SP.
One note,It was the BN who basically bought-out the ATSF,when Gristein left and put Krebs in charge the corporation was formed and then came the name change of BNSF,Santa Fe fans should be greatful that a full takeover did`nt happen as intended. That`s what coulda happened to the BN name too.
If it was`nt for the BN,ATSF woulda never stayed in any sort of an existence. I`am a BNSF employee and proud of ALL of our heritage. Albeit some say the ATSF "sucked" however neither of these railroads would`ve survived w/o each other. If anything be mad at the UP for purchasing the CNW,that`s what started the mid-90`s merger mania. If rumors hold true BNSF and NS will merge, there has also been speculation that a BNSF CN buyout could happen down the road too.
On one hand I love the H2 paint,I do like the H3 but Yeah I miss the red and silver as much as I miss cascade green. Mergers killed railroads pesonalities.
