Firstly, that is a technical error the youtube team is trying to fix.

If you wanna delete your account, you gotta delete your google account assosiated with the account you want to close. Hope this helped! Have a great day :D

the delete and change password etc... is just moved to the manage area and that's it.

I closed it and I just reopened to see what happened. everything is like i left it, the inbox is still full of my old messages, and it even kept the record of the replies to my comments while the account was closed. my channel background came back up by itself as well as my favorites and channel description... ihad heard messages would be deleted... i just came to share, someone might find the info useful
