This field has never respected COTA's and never will. I did it for about years and got tired of dealing with all the arrogant, bossy, and rude therapists who treat you like a child. If your looking for a career you can be proud of, then by all means, don't get into OT. All you are is a glorified CNA that takes people to the bathroom and wipes butts all day. Don't believe me, then go do it for a week, and then decide for yourself.
cotaman7: man!!! you are full of hatred to OT, I have found your screen name in every post about OT and nothing but negative comments, ARE YOU AN OT WANNA BE??? lol
I do feel however good the video is they should not be lifting the patients..max assistance..but anymore than that and the if the patient will no longer improve will need to be hoisted...that is how you wear and tear your back over a long time period...this is my only hesitation about this type of job.
This video had the potential of promoting COTAs and their value in the field of Occupational Therapy. Instead, I feel that the COTA was equated to that of an Aide-exactly what we have been striving to get away from! It must be clarified that Aides are a valuable support system as transporters, workspace prep and cleanup, equipment ordering, or an extra set of hands under the direct supervision of COTAs or OTRs. It is a very demanding yet *fulfilling* career!
lol...i was about to post a comment regarding what they said about the COTA too until i saw yours. I am in my last year of college for OTA and it is VERY hard work. This video degraded their value I feel...
I appreciated the publicity that the clip provides to the Occupational Therapy profession, however the part about the aide instructing and assisting clients in the clinic and at home is not accurate. The aide basically transports the client to the therapy room if working in a SNF. They are asked sometimes to collect the equipment from its storage area for use by the client. This is under the directives of the OTR and the COTA.
Occuaptional therapy assistants are professionally trained and must go to college and learn important techniques. COTA's must take a certification exam as aides do not. Aides are there to assist the OTR and COTA and can not perform direct patient treatment as this video talks about. I just thought it should be cleared up since COTA's work very hard for there degree to do there jobs and they are not the same as an aide.
Is it true they have to wipe ass and give people baths?
