What irrates me about this video is how misleading it is: sorbent boom is not made for recovery, it is made for containment. The surface area is less, and it has a much lower absorption rate specifcally so that it will not "soak up" all the oil and soit will remain floating...A demo showing hair verses a synthetic menas actually designed for recovery (sorbent pad or roll maybe? Particulate?) would be a much more accurate demonstration...and a much less misleading video.
@booniecat7 This is BP sorbent boom, I checked on purpose. It's a good thing these BP's aren't for containment, would have been far more useless. Oil was sloshing under and over the boom far too easily for it to have any containment value. Containment booms have "skirts" that hang down 18 inches or so. And don't worry too much about nonprofits misleading the public about the benefits of synthetic oil based BP products. BP isn't a poor misunderstood company that needs your sympathy.

It may sit lower but wouldn't that mean its easier for the oil to go over the boom. Also I hoped you disposed of that oil appropriately the hypocrites.
I like the hair boom better, it seems more resourceful, as well as appears to hold the oil in better.
But if you are going to test the two, shouldn't the booms be the same size. The hair boom sits lower in water maybe partially because it is longer and lower than the conventional one, it has more surface space.
when contacting the HAZ MAT people what is their excuse for NOT accepting the hair/fur booms?? It's natural and biodegradable! I don't see the problem it seems to be a win win to me!! oh and I would rather hear the conversation than the music!!!

I own a pet grooming salon and we signed up to donate our hair! We also put up signs asking customers to donate nylon to us to send in....So happy we can do something to help!!!

this also works so well because hair doesnt absorb water, only the oil! It is why during WWII blankets and rope and such were made out of hair cut from the Jewish Prisoners... the other boom looks to have retained water as well, causing it to have less room for oil. this is awesome.
@kczelusniak I'm all for them cleaning up their own poo, but I think they will skimp in any way they can. If they're not accepting the boom (is that confirmed? that was my question.) maybe it's because a concerted effort among people who care and will sacrifice exposes them as the opposite of that.

I agree that the music is nice and also that I would like to hear better what they are saying. Also the first test does use different shapes but the second does not.
The only reason I think of why BP is interested in using synth over hair is that the synth one is made of OIL. Yes folks plastic is made of oil - all of it! So BP makes money from selling stuff that cleans up BP's mess. Haliburton probably sells it. Thats my guess.

The point shouldn't be which boom absorbs better. It's that the hair booms work at least as well as conventional materials. There are literally warehouses of hair boom ready to go along the Gulf Coast. The Matter of Trust has been offering them to BP and local Parishes for free. Some of the Parishes are interested but BP isn't willing to try them (at this writing). The spill is so big; let's use everything we've got. Please.
I'm kinda confused... Boom is for preventing oil from moving past a point, and at the same time to move the oil to a location to collect it. They already use things like hair and hay for collection purposes, but I don't think they call them booms. Is this video suggesting they replace the booms that are acting like boundrys or walls with hair? We already don't have enough boom to properly contain the spill, upping the cost isn't a solution. If they mean for collection, its already used.
I had 9" of my locks cut off and got my hairdresser to start collecting all of his "cuttings". The locks are in the mail. For the first time in my life, I feel good about sporting short hair. It's been long for decades.

canadpol, if the so-called experts are making the call, why wouldn't they use the hair/fleece boom INSIDE the traditional ones? Seems like that would take advantage of what both have to offer: contain and clean up the mess.
As far as the music goes, I'm pretty sure you have the capability to mute your sound...there's a reason why that's a standard feature on computers.

Rather than talk to BP, talk to the Parish Presidents. BP is looking for a one size fits all solution instead of looking ad different solutions for differtent situaitons. They should be trying everything, not one thing at a time.

I like the hair boom better, it seems more resourceful, as well as appears to hold the oil in better.
But if you are going to test the two, shouldn't the booms be the same size. The hair boom sits lower in water maybe partially because it is longer and lower than the conventional one, it has more surface space.
The music needs to go though-agreed!

this also works so well because hair doesnt absorb water, only the oil! It is why during WWII blankets and rope and such were made out of hair cut from the Jewish Prisoners... the other boom looks to have retained water as well, causing it to have less room for oil. this is awesome.

I am a hair salon owner and stylest in destin fl .I also volunter with the people in Ft Walton Beach Fl.
I have been collecting hair from the great people in st augustine Fl and bring it here to destin to help. I just have one thing to say is to everyone that has doubted. this project. Open your eyes and see what can be done with a little effort. Those of us that live and work on tha coast just want something that works and this is the simple solution to a huge problem.

Agreed. A running commentary as the oil soaks up would fit perfectly there. The music is just awful for the message you're trying to get out.

I agree that the music is nice and also that I would like to hear better what they are saying. Also the first test does use different shapes but the second does not.
The only reason I think of why BP is interested in using synth over hair is that the synth one is made of OIL. Yes folks plastic is made of oil - all of it! So BP makes money from selling stuff that cleans up BP's mess. Haliburton probably sells it. Thats my guess.

The point shouldn't be which boom absorbs better. It's that the hair booms work at least as well as conventional materials. There are literally warehouses of hair boom ready to go along the Gulf Coast. The Matter of Trust has been offering them to BP and local Parishes for free. Some of the Parishes are interested but BP isn't willing to try them (at this writing). The spill is so big; let's use everything we've got. Please.

After a about 10mins the Hair boom will sink make a worse situation even worse. as long as you keep your eye on the boom it might be fine.

See the video before this one showing the collection system, with the flotations. There are 20 warehouses of hair booms waiting for weeks, all free.
The prevent booms were up, the weather picked up and the oil all went right over the PETROLEUM PRODUCTS, instead of holding the oil.
Instead of using something harmless and effective, the spray has made the wall of death down there. Now the need is floaters, sinkers and in between.

I'm kinda confused... Boom is for preventing oil from moving past a point, and at the same time to move the oil to a location to collect it. They already use things like hair and hay for collection purposes, but I don't think they call them booms. Is this video suggesting they replace the booms that are acting like boundrys or walls with hair? We already don't have enough boom to properly contain the spill, upping the cost isn't a solution. If they mean for collection, its already used.

Doesn't make a difference, relatives in Connecticut and I have personally tired this with their and my Siberian Huskies hair and panty hose
It sucks up used motor oil, and the new synthetic brands extremely fast!
Other countries have been using this method for similar issues for centuries...

I had 9" of my locks cut off and got my hairdresser to start collecting all of his "cuttings". The locks are in the mail. For the first time in my life, I feel good about sporting short hair. It's been long for decades.

well. first of all. she was moving them biasly. she was moving the hair one far more often. and with better strokes. also. the bp boom is shorter in length and therefore has less active soaking surface. im sure the hair one is bettter. but bullshit touchhy feely bias videos like that deserve no credit.

@Wyndstarthedruid The difference in length is the actual difference... they didnt make longer hair booms just for the video. That is the actual size of BOTH! and i dont think the stokes matter at all... the hair boom clearly soaked up more oil!

canadpol, if the so-called experts are making the call, why wouldn't they use the hair/fleece boom INSIDE the traditional ones? Seems like that would take advantage of what both have to offer: contain and clean up the mess.
As far as the music goes, I'm pretty sure you have the capability to mute your sound...there's a reason why that's a standard feature on computers.

So... what I am hearing is that the hair is ineffective because it ABSORBS the oil. What kind of bull is that? Don't we WANT the oil absorbed? How is just containing it solving the BIG problem? Is it because you can't suck it up later and sell it to us as fuel? I will never use BP again. Just one voice...

Very interesting to see exactly how this works, and how much good people are really doing! Our pet grooming salon has been saving up every little tuft to send down, and it's a good feeling knowing that it's going to good use. This whole situation is such a disaster; it's great that so many people are stepping up to help! :}

Rather than talk to BP, talk to the Parish Presidents. BP is looking for a one size fits all solution instead of looking ad different solutions for differtent situaitons. They should be trying everything, not one thing at a time.

canadpol, Don't be a jerk. What's wrong with using BOTH kinds of boom? One to ABSORB the oil and get it OUT of there, and the other to prevent it from going any further. It's FREE, so what's the problem? Or maybe THAT is the problem...somebody's not making tons of money off of it? They need to get a clue and get BUSY and quit making excuses and laying blame.
It's time to SHUT UP AND WORK.

The reason the hair booms are no good, as explained by the "experts" is that the hair gets watterlogged and sits lower in the water.
