i haven't seen this movie yet so i don't know if it's better, but the fight choreography in this scene was a total bore in my opinion, except when she flies down from atop the bamboo - that was cool
Indeed, this film clip reminds me of "'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "House of Flying Daggers," of which both starred Zhang ZiYi, whose namesake graces this Youtube website.
This film was the first Chinese-language film to enter the Cannes Film Festival in the early 70's, a few years after its first release in Asia. I happened to come across its filmmaker, Mr. Hu, in a down-to-earth Japanese noodle restaurant, "Mishima" on 3rd, in Los Angeles ~6 weeks before his death in the late 90's.
Because Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is an American production. The masses are more likely to gush over something made easier to understand for them yet appear all cultivated doing so. It wasn't a bad movie though, in my opinion. But King Hu, and this scene, are brilliant.
@antoniod Because Crouching tiger is a masterpiece. Fighting coreography is like a dance , costume , story even the weapons they used everything was perfect. The house of the flying daggers & hero were great too
King Hu didn't use special effects. He used hidden trampolines and a lot of edits. He was also a student of Chinese art. That's why his action scenes are so unique. Ang Lee payed homage to this scene in Crouching Tiger.
a pity that such a tremendous achievement will always be known only as a footnote to CTHD. but then alec guinness' illustrious career is always reduced to obi wan kenobi.
badass

The way the bamboos trees shake at some scenes looks as if somebody's having sex or jacking off under it.
