beautiful video--i will ride the EB next year from Chicago to Seattle. I miss the F-40PH but the Metra commuter trains in Chgo still runs them. I purchased 2 Kato F-40PH's and plan on getting 2 more for my planned future Amtrak train project. The Genesis locomotives are nice and more powerful than the F units but its the F-40PH's that stayed in my heart.
I rode the empire builder once.. it was pretty fricken cool.. boarded in st cloud mn at 2 am and was in east glacier park Montana 20 hrs later.. awesome scenery !!!
The Empire Builder truly is Amtrak's premier train. The attitude of the staff, the food being served on real chinia, not plastic. You name it. I love traveling on that train!
Does anyone remember "WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON THE RAILROAD" was Amtrak's slogan in the late 1970s?
F40s are still used on VIA trains in Canada and are being rebuilt.
They were the best...perhaps not the most "Classic" like the E and F-Units...but mechanically the epitome of U.S. Diesel-Electric locomotive design. Got to run a pair and compare to the GEs...no comparison. Only the UP DDA40X Centennial accelerates better.
AMTK wasted a LOT of money...they could have put 3000 gal fuel tanks like the CSX Exec F40s, put in Dash 3 electricals, and had a "new" loco better than million-plus GEs. At least a man in CA saved the 231, 282 is saved, & Denver Ski Train.
I'm with you ryan, I miss the F40PH's myself !!! It's hard 2 look up at them now that they been converted the "N.PC.U.'s". The Genesis are A.O.K. but they'll never take the place of the F40PH's !!!
Believe it or not but as a software tester / computer programmers for that last 25 years, I not believe that I made a mistake should have gone into the railroad.
This is a must see video! 5 stars!!!!! This PBS documentary is one of my all time favorite rail videos. The interviews, aerial footage, views from the station platform, views out the back of that fine SuperLiner of the vast open beauty of America, the music, railroad radio chatter, just an overall great mix making it once again I must repeat, a must see video. --Jim
I will definately have to pick this one up!!! I have been buying train tapes for years and feel bad I never thought of picking this one up,sorry Green Frog,I apologize.
This production was produced and edited by John Yeager an ABC Affiliate producer, for Green Frog Productions. They used music from Professional music libraries.
