Why don't you agree with God's ways? How you you have a better way? Did you create the heavens and the earth? Did you create humans? So you are basically saying you are smarter than God. How can anyone be smarter than God and have a better way than God?

Sad thing is, what if Chan is right? What if God is completely sovereign? Saying there is no will of decree is saying God is not in control of all things. Philosophically speaking one can no say God is sovereign (as in control of all things) without believing in a will of decree. If God is outside of time (created time) he knows all things and can act supremely (Job 1-2) within this created time he in the end is the final person to say nay or ya to what ever happens.

it's what we as Christians are supposed to do. And he is reading the Bible critically. He doesn't want to believe in Hell as does anybody else, but it's real. As far as the "Potter and the Clay" Chan's right we can in no way describe or attempt to fathom who God is and why he is the way he is. He just is.

At the end you lose all credibility with your argument. "Self-righteousness masked under self-deprecation..." If you really looked into the man Francis Chan is you would see he is in no way self righteous. He is one of the most self-less people I've ever seen. He could easily be making 6 figures a year, but he gives a large portion of his income away to missions and the needy. He lives off a salary of roughly $40,000 a year. He doesn't do this for the recognition either.

@ericahlovell Yeah, ViolentlyGraceful is one of the few Atheists I sub to and Listen to. I have sympathy for his story about his previous years as a Christian.

If what is good is good because God does it, instead of God doing something because it is good, than the phrase 'God is good' is meaningless. If God is not good according to the human understanding of what goodness is, than there is no reason to believe in, much less worship this God, except fear, and frankly, we can sit around all day thinking up different Gods to fear, picking one doesn't make anyone any better off.

You're spot on. If we suspend our sense of moral intuition, all understandings of how God behaves and how God doesn't behave become equiprobable. Fred Phelps' God becomes just as viable as anyone else. We have absolutely no means of discerning whether we may show up in heaven, but in heaven, everyone is waterboarded for all eternity, and its ok, cause God can do whatever God pleases, and no one can question that morality of that behavior.
