Lymphedema isn't necessarily caused by being overweight. It sometimes occurs when cancer patients have their lymph nodes removed. My husband has lymphedema and we use compression bandages to prevent the swelling from becoming so severe that the skin would begin to leak clear fluid, which is something this lady could be doing! It is a lot of work, but well worth it. As for the fork & tweezer wisdom, maybe you can expand your minds enough to see that not all things are within our control!
I hope this never happens to you. My mother had similar prob and was not obese. It occurred bcse of an injury that interrupted the blood circulation. She had the same issue with draining, etc. I can understand what this women is going through. People have also had issues like this from insect bites, etc. Unless u r going to touch her leg I would not be concerned about this. I'm sure if she has this health issue she has a thyroid problem that makes it impossible for her to lose weight. This is true for some people who are TOO skinny as well. I remember a case of a little girl that had to eat constantly or she'd die. She was always eating french fries and hamburgers since they carry more calories and fat, which is something her body needed more of.

I also have lymphedema with liquid drainage thru my skin. Wrap your leg in diapers and wrap the whole thing with compression bandages. It's not as bulky as you would think, I was able to work and wear this under jeans fairly comfortably.

From what she said she was containing it. she was using absorbant pads beneath her legs in case they drained. You've heard of puppy pads? They have absorbant granules in them just like baby diapers, when liquid contacts them they gell up and hold the liquid. All she'd have to do is pick up the pad and any liquid will have already been contained. Just as if an incontinent student came to class wearing depends. His leak would be contained exactly the same but more personally.

This was a just decision. It is not just her rights in question here, but the rights of the other students and of the teachers. I would not want to be in a room with someone leaking fluid. Frankly, if I am going to pay to attend a college, I have an expectation of certain standards and I don't expect to be exposed to potential health risks (at the least it is unsanitary). Once she could not attend class properly with her condition she was asked to leave as the school had grounds to refuse her.

Weight has a big effect on Lymphedema. The more fat in your body, the more fluid you'll take.

@iansmelly How sure are you it carries no bacteria or viruses? AIDS? Hepatitis? Because I wouldn't want that stuff leaking on me. Feel bad for her? No never. Most doctors recommend wrapping or compressing the effected area. She decided instead of doing that to let it leak all over the floor. Yummy.

But what this is really about is taking the initiative and at least TRYING not to stuff your face all the time and maybe try and go for walks rather then getting a little disabled sign and driving around in your car so you can get the close spots everywhere to minimize you're walking. Um thats a major heath safety issue. If your legs are leaking goo that can carry bacteria, viruses, and I can only imagine the smell. Why doesnt she wrap her legs? If I was a student at this school I would be disgusted if someone was melting on the floor as I was trying to learn, thats a major distraction.

I also have lymphedema with liquid drainage thru my skin. Wrap your leg in diapers and wrap the whole thing with compression bandages. It's not as bulky as you would think, I was able to work and wear this under jeans fairly comfortably.

From what she said she was containing it. she was using absorbant pads beneath her legs in case they drained. You've heard of puppy pads? They have absorbant granules in them just like baby diapers, when liquid contacts them they gell up and hold the liquid. All she'd have to do is pick up the pad and any liquid will have already been contained. Just as if an incontinent student came to class wearing depends. His leak would be contained exactly the same but more personally.

@Metqa It's "LYMPHedema," and it is not a disease of the adipose tissue, but a disease wherein the lymphatic drainage system is not functioning (circulating and draining the lymph properly). The fluid becomes very congested in her dependent extremity vessels, leaks out into the interstitial tissue, and consequently leaks through to the the epidermis. I think you have this disease confused with "lipidemia" (too much fat in your blood serum). In any case, yeah this is disgusting.

This was a just decision. It is not just her rights in question here, but the rights of the other students and of the teachers. I would not want to be in a room with someone leaking fluid. Frankly, if I am going to pay to attend a college, I have an expectation of certain standards and I don't expect to be exposed to potential health risks (at the least it is unsanitary). Once she could not attend class properly with her condition she was asked to leave as the school had grounds to refuse her.

To my knowledge, lymphedema isn't caused by obesity. so, I'm sympathetic to that extent - but geez, I'm surprised if they supposedly knew about it and said nothing about it before.
