CARNATIC MUSIC IS APPRECIATED, PERFORMED (OR SUNG IN SOLITUDE AS PRAYER OR MEDITATION)ALL OVER SOUTH INDIA AND PRESENTED IN CONCERTS GLOBALLY HOWEVER DEVELOPMENT OF THIS IMMORTAL CLASSICAL MUSICAL SYSTEM AS A TREASURE FOR MANKIND TOOK PLACE TO THE MAX. AS HEREDITARY OCCUPATION BY NAAGASWVARAM VIDWAANS ATTACHED TO TEMPLES AND OR PATRONISED BY AFFLUENT SECTIONS (INCLUDING KINGS) AND TANJAVUR DIST. OF TN. ABOUNDED IN THEM. Vocal masters like GNB, Semmangudi, .. drew all profundities from them.
Thank you very much for posting - he passed on far too early. I had heard/read about the Bade Ghulam Ali Khan connection, but was pleasantly surprised to hear the Gawati piece here. Is this song available anywhere in its entirety?
GNB has composed a song in Gavathi. Recordings of this song sung by his disciples are available, as he was not singing his own compositions, except for one in Yaduluakambodhi which was sung after great persuasion by his rasikas.
One direct disciple of GNB , Sri Someswara Babu (Babu) (a great singer with great melodic voice and a composer in his own right) passed away today (15th FEbruary 2009) at chennai. Sri Babu also taught studennts at bombay in late 1980s and 19902 (BARC chembur, and Kalyan ).Sad a generation has passed away
I learnt from him from the ages 3-7...he taught me for free since he already taught my mother and he thought I had talent....I used to run away whenever he came home...since I was too young to understand the opportunity I was getting....I pray to God that his soul meets the Creator in magnificent glory....and I hope he knows that I loved him and I am grateful for the small time I got to spend in his tutelage....my memory of him will always be of softness and melody....
Got this link by sheer luck. My name is Srinivasan & Babu sir was my teacher for 2 years at Shanmukhananda 1982 - 1984. Heard later that he had shifted to banglore, understand that he was a devotee of Sai Baba. Thanks a lot everybody ...............
