True! Be sure to check out the Sick & Twisted Players spoof of Cool Ones here on UTube. In LA oob 1980, a girl I knew used to give Cool Ones parties. Shed taped the movie (remember VHS) and cut out the commercials. Everyone got smashed or stoned and did The Tantrum, etc. But the part that ALWAYS but ALWAYS got the loudest hoots, shrieks and howls was Debbie Watson running down The Strip weeping and singing This Town.
I've never heard that rumor about Petula (why WOULD she dub someone else's singing voice in such a mediocre movie, when Warner Bros. could easily find an "unknown" studio session singer to do it cheaply?). I DO know this was originally intended as a Nancy Sinatra vehicle- hence the new songs by Lee Hazlewood that were featured in the film.
Warner Bros. also had a music publishing catalogue they wanted to exploit, which included Porter's "One Of Those Things", and the song Mrs. Miller "warbles" at the end, Cahn & Styne's "It's Magic", introduced by Doris Day in Warner's "Romance On the High Seas" (1948). This was a "teen movie" conceived and produced by "grownups", hence the self-parody towards the end. Only one "hit song" came out of this- Lee Hazlewood's "This Town", which was covered by Frank AND Nancy Sinatra.
Fascinating. Thx again. This must be why Secret Love is also used in the film. God bless poor Gil Peterson, such a talented individual in what was supposed to be a break thru role, and he has to sing a song made famous by Doris Day! Actually, I think he handled it quite well. Do you believe the story that Petula Clark (using an American accent) dubbed the terrible Debbie Watson singing This Town?
The story was loosely based on Lada Edmund, Jr.'s popularity as "the girl in the cage" on "HULLABALOO". Unfortunately, HER career, after that show ended in September 1966, was about as successful as this movie was in April 1967....as was Debbie Watson's, who never headlined another theatrical film. This is the "TV trailer", because Phil Harris' dialogue at :28 is censored {"What the (hell) is she doing??"}. Would you believe WILLIAM CONRAD produced this?
Thx, did not know this. Since the dance craze started in Palm Springs, I always thought they were borrowing from the life story of Candy Johnson, the fringe shaking go-go dancer from the Beach movies. Originally, she was a sensation at the El Mirador Hotel in Palm Springs. Thats how she came to AIPs attention, from industry people going to PS on the weekend and catching her act. Suspect you are more right. By 1967, Johnson would have been forgotten.

Roddy McDowall's movie Planet of the Apes discussed in great, new bio (Charlton Heston: An Incredible Life) at amazon! McDowall had sinfully gay (Romans 1:21-27) problems! Debbie Watson rocks!
Gil Peterson! Baby boomer women, who saw this movie when they were young, have never forgotten his remarkable, impossibly handsome, blonde Ken doll looks.

That dancing was about right, but this style of music was more or less gone by 1964 (music changed VERY fast between about 1964 and 1972)...

"Today's music and dance" and they're singing Cole Porter? Nothing like middle-aged movie idiots trying to make a hip movie back then, Love it.

This flick was bizarre. Roddy McDowell was it's saving grace, that & Glen's cameo & the opening credits.
