The Russians because of Stalin's stupidity and an officer corps nearly wiped out by Stalin lost almost 1 million soldiers fighting the Finns before the war even started.

Note, I applauded the brave Russian people and army, but faulted Stalin for having been a horrible leader. The USSR lost over 20 million people: that should not have happened. The death toll would have been far lower had Stalin not screwed things up. I suggest you read "Khrushchev Remembers". He described Stalin as cowering under his bed for weeks as the Nazis advanced.
