Chaka is my favorite but I have to say that Chaka did go through her period where I thought she had lost that strong, powerful and beautiful voice. But Chaka did get herself together and like fine wine that voice got better with time. Like you said just pull up recent youtube Chaka and one can see proof. Look at that 2008 version of Chaka singing the star spangled banner. That voice is back and better and stronger than before.

This was just one perfomance that was a long time ago. I actually have heard Whitney sound better after drugs. Whitney was singing some hard songs from the past. I bet her new songs she will breeze right through. I have seen people do worse.

We cant expect Whitney to sound exactly the same as she did all those years ago. A number of things have to her to changer her voice: child birth, DRUGS, and i believe she has also had her vocal nodules removed which can weaken your vocal muscles. But she could of helped this by not taking any drugs...
lets not bring chaka into this..she still has a voice and still sangs this song with the same passion that she had years ago.just look at her 2009 performances this is still chaka's song period..
this was secretly recorded from some small camera. you can't tell from this how she sounds. for a cheap recording, whitney sounds pretty good, complete with key change.

Yes I can say Chaka sounds the same. All you have to do is pull up one of her recent clips here on youtube. Her range is unchanged and she has more of her voice left than any of her contemporaries. She still sings all of her songs full voice.

I don't understand why every people want her to "be exactly like before". She got older and lived a hard life.... I love her, and would of course go see her if I got the chance... It is such a DAMN shame. But you take a ONCE classy girl who spoke well and sang unbelivably, have her marry BOBBY and since misery loves company, BOBBY brought her back to the GETTO, and took her life and voice away. Unfortunatly, this is what coke, heroin and other hard drugs and years of abuse does to you.. Whitney was a legend, and always will be when she was good, but now, she just needs to concentrate on her life and her daughter, and HOPEFULLY teach her to NOT do what her mother did!
this is disappointing...Usually, even with her voice not what it used to be, she would be able to pull it off with her showmanship, but it's just not working here. I don't think her new album will be that successful, not with her voice like this.
this was in early feb. she just quit smoking which is terrible for her voice to rid of her primary addiction which was crack....her voice is going to rejuvenate its self after smoking plus she has acces to the best voice doctors and teachers in the world

This is unacceptable. I saw Chaka Khan perform her version live and it was one of the best I've ever heard (along with the performance); Whitney just sounds like faded glory here. At least she's innocent; it's just difficult to reclaim the damage after all she's been through. Her "I'm Every Woman" talks at the very beginning are not very convincing, and the instrumental music overwhelms Whitney at times. I love Whitney, but she can do better this!
Yeah Chaka still has the power in her voice even after 35 years of her style of singing. Whitney unfortunately has had to deal with vocal nodules and believe me, it can be very damaging to any singer.

marj j blig voice was almost as bad as this performance back in 1999 and when she stoped doing drugs and smoking heavily her voice imporved immensely, personally i think whitneys voice can be restored to anywhere from the 1994 era to 2000, even 1994 her voiced had been damaged if you listen to her concerts in her mid twentys

2009-10 seems to be a "Key Years" for a Whitney comeback. Nostalgia ofen runs on a 20-year cycle, and this comeback would equate to this being right in the middle of her prime. But I miss the dance music of 1974-1996, from Disco to Freestyle to House to Techno. Electronica, trance, and whatever they're doing now doesn't really want to make me dance anymore.
i just hope she continues to revive her voice..it's still there..it's just that it really needs a vigorous and rigid re-training to bring it back..and i know that it'll take a bit longer..but all the best..i love this woman..she's really the belter of the 90s!

listen to how dee she is singing now - thats not stress, or singing too much - look at Celine Dion, she performed 5 nights a week for 5 years in Vegas, but her voice was still in good shape when she started touring a month later - this is drugs. She still commands the stage like no other female though (maybe Aretha, much as I hate her). Poor Whitney, what a waste.

She can still sing, granted it's not as good as it was 10 years ago. Lets be honest though she's in her mid 40s and has been performing and touring for decades. What do people expect? No one sounds the same. Listen to Patti yelling and screaming all over the place, or Aretha and Dionne you can barely understand what they're saying now. You get older your voice changes. It's a part of life. Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Toni none of them sounds as good as they did back then.

u know she is singin this song in the same key that she did in live right back from 1993? 1 key down from the CD version. and IEW takes some range!!! her voice sounds alot better here than her other recent performances! she is getting better and better everytime we hear her... so this performance isnt her best, but its better than others recently.. and i suggest u go watch IWALY/IBIYAM/INRBIO from this night, coz her voice was tired her, but she ripped the hell outa INRBIO!!! it was brilliant!!

tbh, obviously she could sound betteer, but this is still really good! and after however many years people do lose their voices and so although she could sound better, she would be losing her voice a small bit now too. for example, on disco week in American Idol, none of the singers in the medley sounded as good as they once where. it just happens.

I have been a fan of Whitney since the beginning. I think she rose to fame (like so many) too early and too fast and then did not manage her money. Dabbling in drugs and partying too much has taken a toll. She still sounds better than Britney or any of the new girls but her voice is gone. I think she would not working anymore if she had any money left. It's sad.
she was'nt partying..more like touring. by 1988 she had done 200 shows, compared to mariahs 150 shows from 1990-2008, then in 1990=120 shows, 94=110 shows, hardest working women that could'nt rest her voice compounded with an asshole of a husband,stress, couple misscarages then you got whitneys stressful life..nothing glamourous
drugs will mess up your voice, depending what the substance is, to my knowledge smoking directly damages your vocal cords, but the other big hinderance was the excessive touring in the late 80's to mid 90's which did a diservice, especially the 1994 tour where she was singing with vocal nodules 3-4 of the tour and could'tn rest, plus whitney belts in pure chest and does'nt use alot of head voice when she belts a big note and that messed her voice too
o.k. she toured excessively i can understand that but her voice sounded crisp in the 80's and 90's up until i'll say around maybe 98 but i did still hear good performances in 98 i think it was after that they detriorated. so if it was touring in the late 80's and mid 90's her voice would sound bad than right? it didn't sound bad than! she was definitely touring more than than after about 98.
if you watch performances from 86 then 88 then 90 then 94 then 95 you'll notice difference in all of them, her voice slowly became heavier, whitney was a light smoker in her youth as well but she was'nt into drugs. cigs and belting in pure chest were the two big demons that messed her voice, same with mariah.....those two are pure chest belters they dont wail/shrill like aretha or patti labelle, chaka khan who slide into head voice in their belts for support

last time when mariah and whitney faced off, whitney outsold mariah in 1999. right now whitney is a heavy dramatic mezzo, she once was a pretty high soprano in the 80's then became a dramatic soprano in the early-mid 90's then a mezzo, she kinda regained her soprano in 1999-2000 in parts when she was'nt smoking anf getting high, so if she rests her voice and works accordingly she'll sound amazing and wont resort to lipping her songs like mariah
it was 98 99 year and mariahs was a greatest hit with only 4 new songs on their still sold 3 million whitneys had a whole new album only sold 4 million in the us. lipping the songs? assuming anyone wants to hear them. because the song with akon didn't sound to promising honestly! remember the big comeback in 2003? try it on my own made it all the way up to #84. same voice same results slightly better voice slightly better results.
I don't mind it when singers lip, I just mind when they don't make it obvious. Mariah makes it obvious when she lips but Celine just fools people and acts like she's just done something, like when she sings All by Myself and does that high note.
celine is the orginal lipper , since the early 90's plus she mixes her chest notes( adds head voice) unlike whiteny and mariah, puer chest belters like them are much more vulnerable to vocal deteriotion
All three of them used pure chest and mixed throughout their careers. Mixing is technically better for your voice and therefore good to do, so I think you just paid CD a compliment.
WH mixed very often, especially around high E/F. You could hear it when she didn't mix because she sounded shouty. MC mixed, but sang so high (up to G#5) in almost full chest! Some would argue that it was pure chest. CD's tone makes it sound like she's using pure chest, but she actually mixes at around G5.
give it up, both mariah and whitney mixed past F but there chest notes up until G#5 were still pure thats why they never sustained them. celin dion mixes the most out of allof them she mixes past D5 and thats how she preserved her voice whitney was belting like crazy in 1994 D-F mostly in chest so as mariah in 1995/96 and that messed there voices up, celine is a true mixer but cant generate the power like patti or chaka but she still gets grouped along with whitney and mariah
give what up? You can clearly her on MC's debut album that there was very little head voice in those G#5 belts. On WH's debut album, I don't believe she went past F#5, yet those highest notes were clearly mixed. Furthermore, it's easy to tell when WH mixes because there's more head in hers than in MC's and CD's.

Is she having a hard time doing falsettos? she used to have the smoothest and best sounding falsetto but it seems that she longer capable of doing it. I'm sad.
I'm a big fan but the reality is that her voice is not in the best condition anymore. I hope she could recover because there were some bad notes on that performance. Really bad notes.
I'm excited to see her perform more and i cant wait for her Oprah appearance on the 14th.

The public is so conditioned to 'perfect singing' by Moo-Riah, Christina, Celine, etc. because they either lip-synch to a re-recorded version or sing along to a recorded track that when someone TRULY gifted like Whitney sings w/out 'special effects' she can't win. Her 'mistakes' 'flaws' and 'missed notes' only make her more real and give her performances depth. NO ONE can compare to her, she is THE REAL DEAL!!

We cant expect Whitney to sound exactly the same as she did all those years ago. A number of things have to her to changer her voice: child birth, DRUGS, and i believe she has also had her vocal nodules removed which can weaken your vocal muscles. But she could of helped this by not taking any drugs...

Yes I can say Chaka sounds the same. All you have to do is pull up one of her recent clips here on youtube. Her range is unchanged and she has more of her voice left than any of her contemporaries. She still sings all of her songs full voice.

I don't understand why every people want her to "be exactly like before". She got older and lived a hard life.... I love her, and would of course go see her if I got the chance... It is such a DAMN shame. But you take a ONCE classy girl who spoke well and sang unbelivably, have her marry BOBBY and since misery loves company, BOBBY brought her back to the GETTO, and took her life and voice away. Unfortunatly, this is what coke, heroin and other hard drugs and years of abuse does to you.. Whitney was a legend, and always will be when she was good, but now, she just needs to concentrate on her life and her daughter, and HOPEFULLY teach her to NOT do what her mother did!

This is unacceptable. I saw Chaka Khan perform her version live and it was one of the best I've ever heard (along with the performance); Whitney just sounds like faded glory here. At least she's innocent; it's just difficult to reclaim the damage after all she's been through. Her "I'm Every Woman" talks at the very beginning are not very convincing, and the instrumental music overwhelms Whitney at times. I love Whitney, but she can do better this!

Yeah Chaka still has the power in her voice even after 35 years of her style of singing. Whitney unfortunately has had to deal with vocal nodules and believe me, it can be very damaging to any singer.

whitneys falsetto-head voice has'nt been damaged to much, right now were into june and this performance was 5 months in the past, i can ensure you if she performs right now the rasp is almost gone and her voice will be much more lighter sharper and powerful.....my problem for whitney is the phrasing and her natural speaking since she had new teeeth put in, if she can overcome that 1994 whitney is possible but for sure we'll have 1999 MY LOVE IF YOUR LOVE WHITNEY HOUSTON

my sources that shes been sober for atleast a year now but she was smoking heavily for the past few years to rid her off her primary addiction which was cocaine, smoking can really f ck your voice and deepen it...to my knowledge she has'tn really smoked since this performance in february and thats a good sign because her voice will heal really quickly, when maryj blige quit smoking her voice recovered and now she sings better then before, whitney could restore her voice easily

2009-10 seems to be a "Key Years" for a Whitney comeback. Nostalgia ofen runs on a 20-year cycle, and this comeback would equate to this being right in the middle of her prime. But I miss the dance music of 1974-1996, from Disco to Freestyle to House to Techno. Electronica, trance, and whatever they're doing now doesn't really want to make me dance anymore.

She still commands the stage like no other female though (maybe Aretha, much as I hate her). Poor Whitney, what a waste.

She can still sing, granted it's not as good as it was 10 years ago. Lets be honest though she's in her mid 40s and has been performing and touring for decades. What do people expect? No one sounds the same. Listen to Patti yelling and screaming all over the place, or Aretha and Dionne you can barely understand what they're saying now. You get older your voice changes. It's a part of life. Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Toni none of them sounds as good as they did back then.

u know she is singin this song in the same key that she did in live right back from 1993? 1 key down from the CD version. and IEW takes some range!!! her voice sounds alot better here than her other recent performances! she is getting better and better everytime we hear her... so this performance isnt her best, but its better than others recently.. and i suggest u go watch IWALY/IBIYAM/INRBIO from this night, coz her voice was tired her, but she ripped the hell outa INRBIO!!! it was brilliant!!

tbh, obviously she could sound betteer, but this is still really good! and after however many years people do lose their voices and so although she could sound better, she would be losing her voice a small bit now too. for example, on disco week in American Idol, none of the singers in the medley sounded as good as they once where. it just happens.

I have been a fan of Whitney since the beginning. I think she rose to fame (like so many) too early and too fast and then did not manage her money. Dabbling in drugs and partying too much has taken a toll. She still sounds better than Britney or any of the new girls but her voice is gone. I think she would not working anymore if she had any money left. It's sad.

she was'nt partying..more like touring. by 1988 she had done 200 shows, compared to mariahs 150 shows from 1990-2008, then in 1990=120 shows, 94=110 shows, hardest working women that could'nt rest her voice compounded with an asshole of a husband,stress, couple misscarages then you got whitneys stressful life..nothing glamourous

drugs will mess up your voice, depending what the substance is, to my knowledge smoking directly damages your vocal cords, but the other big hinderance was the excessive touring in the late 80's to mid 90's which did a diservice, especially the 1994 tour where she was singing with vocal nodules 3-4 of the tour and could'tn rest, plus whitney belts in pure chest and does'nt use alot of head voice when she belts a big note and that messed her voice too

o.k. she toured excessively i can understand that but her voice sounded crisp in the 80's and 90's up until i'll say around maybe 98 but i did still hear good performances in 98 i think it was after that they detriorated. so if it was touring in the late 80's and mid 90's her voice would sound bad than right? it didn't sound bad than! she was definitely touring more than than after about 98.

if you watch performances from 86 then 88 then 90 then 94 then 95 you'll notice difference in all of them, her voice slowly became heavier, whitney was a light smoker in her youth as well but she was'nt into drugs. cigs and belting in pure chest were the two big demons that messed her voice, same with mariah.....those two are pure chest belters they dont wail/shrill like aretha or patti labelle, chaka khan who slide into head voice in their belts for support

last time when mariah and whitney faced off, whitney outsold mariah in 1999. right now whitney is a heavy dramatic mezzo, she once was a pretty high soprano in the 80's then became a dramatic soprano in the early-mid 90's then a mezzo, she kinda regained her soprano in 1999-2000 in parts when she was'nt smoking anf getting high, so if she rests her voice and works accordingly she'll sound amazing and wont resort to lipping her songs like mariah

it was 98 99 year and mariahs was a greatest hit with only 4 new songs on their still sold 3 million whitneys had a whole new album only sold 4 million in the us. lipping the songs? assuming anyone wants to hear them. because the song with akon didn't sound to promising honestly! remember the big comeback in 2003? try it on my own made it all the way up to #84. same voice same results slightly better voice slightly better results.

celine is the orginal lipper , since the early 90's plus she mixes her chest notes( adds head voice) unlike whiteny and mariah, puer chest belters like them are much more vulnerable to vocal deteriotion

All three of them used pure chest and mixed throughout their careers. Mixing is technically better for your voice and therefore good to do, so I think you just paid CD a compliment.
WH mixed very often, especially around high E/F. You could hear it when she didn't mix because she sounded shouty. MC mixed, but sang so high (up to G#5) in almost full chest! Some would argue that it was pure chest. CD's tone makes it sound like she's using pure chest, but she actually mixes at around G5.

give it up, both mariah and whitney mixed past F but there chest notes up until G#5 were still pure thats why they never sustained them. celin dion mixes the most out of allof them she mixes past D5 and thats how she preserved her voice whitney was belting like crazy in 1994 D-F mostly in chest so as mariah in 1995/96 and that messed there voices up, celine is a true mixer but cant generate the power like patti or chaka but she still gets grouped along with whitney and mariah

give what up? You can clearly her on MC's debut album that there was very little head voice in those G#5 belts. On WH's debut album, I don't believe she went past F#5, yet those highest notes were clearly mixed. Furthermore, it's easy to tell when WH mixes because there's more head in hers than in MC's and CD's.

Yes, they all mix at a certain point, but I believe that WH mixes sooner than Mariah, and mixes more than she does from F-G. I don't believe CD mixes sooner than they do, and this is partly because of her tone.

yes she does mix sooner but by a half note, mariah mixes G whereas whitney F#5/G..........not CD mixes around Eb5, thats hows shes preserved her voice along with beyonce

lol, you're crazy whitney still has millions, ontop of that condos and properties in different states, for God sakes the woman still has a contract with arista worth $100 mill which she receieved $20-$25 mill upon signing; to this day the contract stands & as she releases albums she gets a portion. contrary to popular belief she is still making $ from royalties, believe me she aint broke at all. apart from that she does not need to retire just rest and take care of herself she will be just fine!

you said she still sounds better than "Brit or any of the new girls".....last I checked Brit was still making that paper along with Rhi Rhi and Miley Cyrus (whom obviously have no voice) so why then can't a legendary singer like whitters do the same??
people will still love and support her (not everyone) just because of the fact she cleaned up her life and is back trying to use her God given talent....trust me MANY are routing for her so "as long as there is life, there is hope"!!:)

I feel like this and not just because Im a fan of hers. I am just glad that she has energy and looks glad to be there. And another thing no matter how bad people think she may sound the woman is in command of the room when she's on stage, and no one can deny that.
