@BNachamkin not sad - I have a maine coon and believe me they are big cats but not fat just big and they have a lot of fur! The belly has heaps of fur and maine coons have more than most breeds as they have an eztra layer of fur cos they are originally from a cold climate as tehy came from Norwegian Forest Cats or Skogs as they get called. All cats are lazy tho'!!!!
My cat Freddie is just a Tabby, but is as mellow as a Maine Coon. It's so new, unique, and refreshing to finaly see something nice to watch and fun to watch, at the same time on youtube. I'm now going to take videos of my cat. This is a great idea. Whoever thought of it, I salute them!
Very cute maine coon, whom I suspect is a rough-coat. That means lots of undercoat making him/her look fat. If you were to pick him/her up, the only fat you'd feel would be on the belly! It is not unusual for MC cats to weigh 20 lbs. or more and not be fat.
Well, maine coons are large cats.. (I have one of my own) But this cat is FAT! My cat is fit, looks almost skinny. BUT he is still a large cat, and my vet say´s he´s in excellent shape and health. So.. learn to see the difference between a fat cat and a large cat!
I adopted my Maine Coon from PetSmart for $85.00 No one knew what type of cat he was until we took him to the vet. He got him when he was 6 weeks old he is almost 3yrs now & huge.
I lov emy maine coon. His name is Kinks because his tail was broken as a kitten and has a kink in it. He's awesome. I'll never be able to have a simple tabby ever again.
Noob, maine coon arent fat they re giant. they re called gentle giants. i ve a cute white maine coon and a ragdoll. they love playing together; i think the ragdoll flirt my coon lol
you have such a cute puddy!!! i have a maine coon called willie. hes right beside me actually, and seriously he is a EXACT image of this cat, a big chunky kitty, grey and white. i also have a russian blue, great cat
I always found their behavior ironic since they are 'survival of the fittest' breeds of cat.
Basically, cats that were left to run wild in a cold environment (maine), and were probably descended from European Forest cats left here by the vikings.
That is very intresting. I have six cats of which one is Main Coon, one is half Main Coon, one is solid white with one gold eye and one blue eye, one Calico, one black and one Tabby. The Main Coon is by far the most intelligent and very jealous, definitaly a lap cat.
Notice how they have some features that make them look like wildcats. The tufted ears, the furry ruff around their necks. Evolution bred them, not people... at least, until recently.
Thanks for the info. I'm going to do some reading on them, I didn't know that much about their history until I read your post. My vet is very fond of him because he has no problems when he goes for his check ups, I have never heard him growl. One of mine has to take a valium before he goes to the vet, it's like trying to grease a wildcat's rear end to get him in a carrier. Glad to be commenting with another cat lover.
For catting wildcat into his carrier, trick I learned from one of my own madcats, you take the cage and put it end up, then drop them headfirst into the cage. they won't have enough time to jump out by the time you get the door closed. I've done it many a time during fire alarms with the squirriliest cats imaginable.
I have tried your solution, he flips the carrier end over end growling and spitting,he breaks his claws trying to get out. He was no problem until he was neutered, he associates the carrier to that experience apparently.
Hold the cage between your legs? And ouch at him breaking his claws - the valium sounds like a good idea. Poor thing remembering his neutering. Maybe get him a new cage with a different smell so the memories aren't so vivid?
I put him in a brand new cage a couple months ago and result was same. He was so traumatized he would stay hidden all day and come out at night to eat and use the litter pan. His name is Charlie and ole Goodtime Charlie's got the blues. He is behind on all his shots. I am going to give him a valium and my sister is going to roll him up in a towel and hold him in her arms, he is very calm when being held. "Hope he don't recognize the vet."
He looks a bit chubby to me that's all - nothing wrong with it. I have a male coone myself (same colour actually - they could be brothers) so I know they are big cats ;-)
Cute cat.

That's why they're so big boned and have fur on their feet (to deal with snow).
They don't mind water, and the fur on their back sheds it.
When their cold, they wrap themselves in their tails, like a squirrel.
Their adapted for cold, harsh climates. Look up some of the maine coon breeder websites. They go over their history. Very interesting breed.
They're smart, because only the smartest and toughest survived. They're were never bred for looks. But their still beautiful cats.
