In April 1957 for one week both Bonnie Guitar and Gale Storms version of Dark Moon were in Billboards Top 10 best sellers in store charts - it wasnt unusual for this to happen back then but this was different - this was only time same songs were in top Ten same time that were both on same label (Dot)
There were actually more recordings in the Fifties because singers like Patti Page and Mary Ford (Les Paul's wife) recorded the same songs ("Mockingbird Hill" and "Tennessee Waltz" for example). There was more competition for record sales. And in the Fifties there were no oldies stations playing the same tired songs over and over. Almost everything was new and the reason they lasted so long is they were so well sung and/or played and arranged.
I always liked Dark Moon by Gale as a girl in early '50s, but for me the best version is by Bonnie Guitar, released in 1957. It was here on YTube, I found it when listening to this one. But alas, it was just taken down 2 wks ago.
@John1948Five thanks, John. Are you talking about Bonnie Guitar's version? It sounded full and rich here on YTube by whoever posted it. I listened to it on Amazon last night, all 3 options on CD but they sounded a little "tin'ny" or like she was singing in a tin tunnel, so didn't buy it.
I was born in 1945 but I can recall/remember hits from the 40's and 50's...probably because the tunes were still played on the radio in later years. This is great!! RIP
Gale Storm was one of my favorites-actress, comedy star and singer. As a baby boomer, I remember her from a very early age. My favorite song of hers is Dark Moon. Such a beautiful voice.

@qb63 Yes, everything was slower then. Fewer new recordings meant the old ones stayed popular longer.

This just inshe was a 50s favorite:
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Gale Storm , whose wholesome appearance and perky personality made her one of early televisions biggest stars, has died at age 87.
The actress died Saturday at a convalescent hospital in Danville, said her son, Peter Bonnell. He says she died of natural causes.
