If it weren't for the wind and such, you could probably spin a smoke emitter round and trigger it on and off whilst using an array of projectors or lasers or something on the same spinnything to light the smoke. It would take a lot of very precise timing that I'm not sure is possible with gases, and then where does the smoke come from? Also I don't see how you can do horizontal stuff - it would just be vertical coloured lines in the shape of a person. Not recognisable.

I saw the real thing being demonstrated on a news cast but on Youtube. It looked real. Maybe it was a mock news hoping one day it would be real. It allowed someone from around the world to be in the studio (virtually) with the other anchor people. But I'm guessing if it was real and not a mock news show, that the person would have to be in front of a green screen. or very advance chromakey software to feather out an actual background in public. fast compositing engines as well.
