  • theyre horrible actors

  • She is ment for gymnastics I do it I'm level 6 team but I'm not as good as Nadia obviously I do some of her moves at least one for each event anyway SHE'S AMAZING

  • It sounds so scripted the conversation between Nadia and bela

  • Betty actually spots during her turns! :)

  • bem, se 11 anos não são grande coisa, que tal 20??? MAS NÃO DESISTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

  • I enjoy the Kerri Strug looks more frightened than Nadia about the double

  • She still got it!

  • I saw Nadia at the Visa Championships last summer, she is so gorgeous! And looks super young

  • WTF the girls are in perfect synchrony even in their steps from 3:54 - 3:57

  • 2:36 ... That girl looks really macho right there. Just sayin

  • If Bela says you can do it..... then you can freakin do it!!!

  • Times move on but no one has matched her elegance.

  • Wow! It may have been staged, but it's still amazing seeing Kerri there several years before '96. Equally amazing is Nadia's ability to still do that stuff at age thirty. Wonder if she could still do any now, almost 20 years after this?

  • Nadia was total class in 1976, she was total class in this video, and she's total class today. The greatest ever, and based on the crap we're seeing with each new destruction of the Code, the greatest there ever will be.

  • She could torn her achilles doing that double back... not tumbling for years and then chucking double, genius.

  • she's awesome

  • I just have to say it, Nadia is adorable in this video. I love it when she says "I did it!" after her double pirouette on beam. So cute.

  • at 3:30

LOL! Picture of Olga Korbut, Nadia's rival and a Soviet gymnast, in the backround on the wall

  • Bela K born in Hungary (wikipedia). On wiki's page, Cluj is Romanian since 1944. What a bad joke!

  • cute video...they acted it out though

  • @tatulover2120 yeah, but you gotta love the early-90s-era "cheese" found on tv shows in those days. kinda like when you see old commercials for clothes that you can only laugh at now, yet they were deemed "the coolest clothes in the world" at the time. :-P

  • i love andai comaneci <3

  • she is a wonder !!!!!! wow an inspiration not only for our kids but for all of us. tumbs up nadia.the perfect girl (remember the 8 tens at montreal olympics

  • Siempre ame a Nadia, Que belleza, me hubiera casado con ella. Ese tema de Nadia, suena bellisimo.

Sera mi heroina x siempre. Mi dios te bendiga siempre Nadia.

  • She kind of looks like Idina Menzel to me.

  • @ladodgerschick ahh I love Idina Menzel and Nadia, but I don't think they look alike.

  • "You can do it!!" haha, you gotta love Bela!!

  • 3 pirouettes on the beam??!!! betty is AMAZING!!1

  • i love how fake & rehearsed bela & nadia's greetings are lol. like they didnt expect each other to be there. & i love how at 1:10 there's a sudafed advertisement when that drug would later rob an olympic all around champion of her gold medal.

but im not trying to be negative here. i love both nadia & bela. they're amazing :)

  • @LMA629 Wow- I never even noticed the Sudafed sign! Yeah that is pretty ironic. How sad for Andreea: Sudafed took away her cold, then it took away her gold. (A Sudafed slogan - ha ha.)

  • que tipaso tiene nadia ..

  • Very very touching! What I like is that Nadia seems to feel good at last, and Bela too! They got rid of the communist repression, and they look happy! After all what they had to bear under Ceacescu kingdom. There is something in their face, their smile, that tells they feel free!

  • Thanks!

  • what I think it's funny it's how buff and big this girls are, while Nadia was so slim and lean around the same age and she possibly did more training.

  • That was really great to watch. Thanks for posting it.

  • i absolutely love their accents!

  • So, Nadia is 30 years old here, I believe? Amazing how good she still is.

I was friends with Sabina Salay, who was a top Hungarian rhythmic gymnast. She got injured just before the '88 Olympics (I think it was '88) and missed out on a medal chance (she was a favorite apparently), but even in her 30's when I knew her she was incredible, specialty was the ribbon. She was teaching gymnastics at that time and doing some acting.

  • we did a school play about Nadia and it was good it becane the nunber one school play of the year in 1979 i wrote it.

  • Really unusual piece, thanks so much for posting it. It's half-publicity fluff piece, half-glimpse into the Karolyi gym and his relationship with his former protege.

  • is it me or does Bela look like an old Bela lugosi ???

  • fuck off Bob Costas.. thinks he's a rocket scientist

  • He's been saying "Yew, cann dew eet!" for a long time now!

Bela gets Nadia to try a double back at 6:31!

  • wow she is so skinny and she managed to wear the one outfit that gave her fat rolls! oh the 90s! :)

  • what the hell was that jab at the romanian government?? "exploiting"??? all gymnasts at that level train for that many hours a day. stupid american media.

  • lol yea 11 years! Not a big differance! she can still do it! wow she is awesome

  • OMg what a horrible wig on Bela

  • @metsdudenj lol Bela wears a wig!?!?

  • GO! NADIA!!

  • Comment removed

  • it's so strange to watch these two banter back and forth like this. nadia coached MY coach and i met them so many times and nadia hung around our gym a lot when she came around Pennsylvania when I was training. it's SO strange to see them before i was even born when they're no different at this age! ah, i love these two.

  • Lol, it's so rehearsed, but really interesting to watch the two of them together.

  • Wow!! So the secret is to train that many hours a day. Thank the Lord for that.

    Thanks for posting.

  • ..... eleven years, not a big deal.... hahahahah! <3

  • So judging their history together and how many years they trained...Did Nadia look upon Bela more as a father figure or really just a trainer. I'm just curious.

  • i think a bit of both :]

  • For Bela's girls here - Kim, Betty, Kerri, HIlary and the others - having Nadia come to their gym and workout with them is probably like if you have a bible study group and Jesus shows up to read this week's text. Something like that.

  • gahahah! totally!!

  • nadia comaneci is so awesome she's my hero

  • Mine too. So that makes us kind of like cousins or something.

  • @forever652 I am with you! She's my hero too.

  • Oh my God she could do gymnastics even at thirty!

  • woow the triple spin :O

  • 0:45, what is he on about exactly ??

    That sounds like sneaky propaganda....

  • They are both saying that the Romanian athletes in the 1970s trained seven or eight hours a day, not the three hours they were told to say. The authorities did not want to be accused of working the athletes too hard, so they told the gymnasts to underplay how hard they worked.

  • Lol, sure :) ^^

Quote : "The Romanian government didn't want to have anybody know, as if they didn't already suspect it (LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL) that they were exploiting young athletes, and using them for the government's purposes..."

So once again : What the hell is he on about !!!! (And world-level gymnasts training just 3 hours a day : loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool....... ^^)

  • I guess I don't know what you mean by "what ...is he on about." I thought you were saying that you didn't understand what he was saying, so I re-worded it. Sorry I wasn't helpful. :)

  • its only 11 yearz.... haha she's amazing!

  • Oh my god how the hell does that girl do three pirouettes on the beam?????? i can barely do one. damn

  • I know! Pretty amazing. It's named after her now too, the "Okino"

  • one remarcable thing about bela is that he NEVER practicesd gymnastics as an athlete...he began learning about this just after he take his office as a school teacher.

  • Sorry if that statement makes me unpopular but tis my opinion.

  • iloveyourstory,

Just because Nadia is an adult doesn't mean that she can't contirue to enjoy gymnastics. Plus in case you didn't know this, Nadia and her husband bart run their own gymnastics school. So get off her back!

  • This was a TV spot or something for famous Olympians or gymnasts. Obviously they would ask Nadia to be on it. Mary Lou gets interviewed at a lot of gymnastic competitions, IE) This past American Cup. All famous gymnasts, or athletes in general are continuously ask to retell their story or tell what's going on in their life now.

  • It was during the Sudafed Skating & Gymnastics Spectacular...

  • I think it's cute at the end how he is actually giving her tips, just like she was still his pupil... lol. It's neat to see how she stands listening to him, probably like how she used to when he coached her.

  • she is amazing one of the best (if not the best) athlete of all times!!! What an inspiration she is!!!!!!

  • whos is the best for you?...For me is Olga Korbut, my platonic love.... :)

    Greetings

  • I did a report on her too! I totally agree with the person below 100%

  • why does the video take so long to load at the end? btw love nadia! she is my hero and idol! ha i did a report on her she rocks and all of you shud read her book its ah-mazing!

  • Are you talking about "Letters to a Young Gymnast"? Yes, it's totally amazing. I'm right now reading Kerri's book called "Diary of Dreams." It's really good too. One of the best I've read by a gymnast.

  • i am learnig a double back and i can already do a double turn, but nadia is th best ever

  • i give nadia another pirfict 10 for her double turn and double back. !!!!!

  • she speeks much better english now

  • well this was broadcast in 1992, LOL.. she had only been in North America for 3 years at that point.

  • WOW, beautiful triple turn on beam!!

  • dat triple spin was awsome :O

  • I like his accent, where is he from?

  • he is from RUMANIA!

  • No man i'm talking about the Host, not bella i know him

  • I GOT TO MEET BELA!!!

    he signed my bag!!

  • I love Kerri when Nadia and Bela are discussing Nadia doing a double. Kerri looks like she's thinking, "Go ahead and try it, it's not like you're one of us. It's not like he's going to make you do 500 situps if you screw it up."

  • Yeah and he's not going to starve you, either!

  • Nadia had MASSIVE motivation and energy, but I'm pretty sure it was Bela who brought the best out of her. Both Nadia and Bela are one of a kind. The best ever at what they do.

  • Remarkable and amazing coach with amazing students......

simply amazing people on earth.... wow...:-),

  • isint it nadia comonichI???

i lllllooooovvvvveeeeeee bella karolyi! he is just about the best coach on earth!!

  • her voice is sooo soft and pretty.

    nadia u r my idol!!!!!!

  • i luv ndia but she just moved she was my coach

  • Yea i bet she was ur coach.

  • No shit. And Bela was her godfather.

  • what does that have to do with anything that I posted

  • I was adding to the sarcasm re: the person who said Nadia was her coach and you replied to her.

  • Bela is the best coach that ever lived.

  • my name is nadia!

  • Nice to see Nadia doing her stuff again. The US does not have a government-centralized training system like most countries do, so it's up to the individual club coaches to set the time. There's usually a training camp for the national team once every 2 or 3 months, and that semi-centralized system is run on sponsors and personal funds.

  • How came that none of the gymnasts in this video is smiling?

Not even when they are resting.

  • LOL. "The Romanian government didn't want to let out thet they were exploiting young athletes". So Bela ask them to tell that they were training only 3 hours per day. How many hours per day are the SUA gymnast training? Let me guess, 3, so the rest of the world won't believe that the SUA government is exploiting young athletes .... ?

  • It's kind of strange seeing Kerri Strug on here with her ponytail, when I'm so used to seeing her with that short haircut, running down and sticking the landing on vault!

  • omg!!!! do u pple have nuting beter 2 do thin citique spelling...? BTWi dont care if i misspelled anithyng!!!!!!! THITS wat skools fore!!!!:)lmao..just joking!!!!! but seriously

  • that was awkward...

  • I love Bela!!!! He is a man with morals and he has great courage! And I love Nadia and Mary Lou Retton

  • morals!?!? you got to be kiding me! he abused these kids like know tomorrow! He seems kind but he wasnt/isnt

  • He wasn't in business to be kind and coddle the gymnasts. He was in the business to train champions. They had parents to be kind to them, but the parents wouldn't help them get perfect 10's.

  • ya except guess what? the parents were affraid of bella. If they would tell their parents bout him he said that he would make the parents disapear or there would be problems for the parents.

  • Wow, I never heard that. Where did you hear it? What was the source? Was it reliable, or did the source have an ulterior motive for saying that. Because if it was me and he said that to me, I would go home, tell my parents, quit his gym and go to the police. Or I would have a tape recorder and try to get him to say it again. But that's just me.

  • extremely reliable source..that why i started saying these comments because of what she told me. She new these girls really well including nadia. you should hear the stories she told me. She was the french teacher for all the girls back in romania and her husband was one of Bella's top coworkers. See the thing is though, this was communist kgb time and they wanted to give the idea that their

  • people were the best so they would stop at nothing to do that and the kids were scared. These kids got no food, everything was searched by the gov and my french teacher(their french teacher) would sneak in food because they would never search her purse because of who her husband was. Bottom line was, you didnt dare go agaisnt the commi's and bella was on their side at that time.

  • I never heard any of that. It really sheds some light on the whole issue. I guess Bela is a much more . . . complex individual than the media portrays.

  • If you were being coached by Bella you would be really good and honored and worked your butt of to be where you were. I don't think you would ruin that opportunity by doing that.

  • I was trying to reply to mka800

  • Seriously. Just ask Emelia Eberle.

  • And it's criticize, not criticise.

  • You might wish to stop lecturing people on spelling. It's actually both correct, depending on whether you use British or American spelling. And while we're at it, same goes for pedophilia/paedophilia.

  • That's right!!! Both are correct!!!

  • hahaha way to put her in her place emmy =)

  • Those other girls watching Nadia in the gym must be so in awe to have the greatest ever right there with them. Bella seems so cool these days, and Nadia is beautiful and happy and in great shape still. Go Nadia!

  • This 'sport' always makes me feel uncomfortable emotionally. Children being made into athletes... there is just an air of exploitation to it.

  • If we have no children in the gym, we have no Nadias on the beam. You can't start gymnastics at 13 and end up in the Olympics at 16.

  • And having 16 year old girls in the Olympics doing gymnastics in skinpy outfits with damaged bodie is a GOOD thing? I refuse to get into a debate with you, you have a warped sense of what is positive, and it isn't yor fault.

  • I don't want to debate either. I was just saying that if high-level gymnasts is the goal, this is what is required. Every area of success requires specific preparation. For gymnastics, this is the preparation that's necessary. As to the "damagied bodies," all athletes at all ages risk it. It's up to each person to decide what they want to do.

  • she's just as good nowadays than she was backthen!

  • That was very cool, watching her do her stuff again.

  • i wish her the best!!!!!!!!!

  • love the video !

  • thank you for this posting :)

  • poor hilary grivich i cant belive she is died

  • wut happen to her...?

  • Car accident. It was 11 years ago.

  • yeah no shit, that is why I am romanian married to a hungarian woman, right ? and my kids are born in USA, now talk about that.

  • How old was she here?

  • She was about 30

  • But the reporter is the same guy as he is right now! Oh my gosh! I'm confused!

  • hey it's Kerri strug!

I like Nadia she soo good

  • Nadia Nadia Nadia Romania

  • Awesome to see Nadia tumbling again...she is fantastic! She will always be the best

  • Bela is the best, when he dies, gymnastics will never be the same...hope he lasts loooonnnggg!

  • Holy shit, it's Bob Costas! AWESOME!

  • that means how are you doing

    I'm proud to be romanian

  • bob costas WHAT THE HELL?

  • This guy Bela is hilarious, one of the best things about the Olympics! His commentary is witty and colorful. They couldn't have picked a better guy to critique the gymnastics events!

  • Betty's triple turn was amazing!

  • hahahhahahah, the wooden imposed dialogue is horrible. My God, why?????

  • Staged............

  • LOL! Having Nadia go against the then teenagers of Kim Zmeskel, Kerri Strug, etc. was agewise the same as when Oksana Chusovitina (at 33) competed against the teenage gymnasts at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Funny thing is, Oksana C. is the same age as what the teens from this video (Kim, Kerri, Betty, etc.) now are! (When this video was made Nastia Liukin was a year old and Shawn Johnson wasn't even born yet!) My how time flies!

  • me and my friends call bela karolyi the "VOW" guy :D

  • in nashville where i live i am friends with some Romanians. i even went there this past Dec and lived with a girl for a short time. anyways. one of my friends here in nashville is married to a woman that trained along side Nadia in the 70's.and went to the 76' olympics as well for Romania. her name is Gabi

  • Hey! Who is this?

    Eu sint Cora. Gaby's daughter.

  • HEY STEVEN!!!!!

  • By the way I am not romanian....I am spaniard...español....i just hate racism

  • really? maybe we had better days but we are still on the podium. Sandra Izbasa took the gold

  • RASCIST ALERT!!!!!!!!!!

  • I invite you to learn Romanian. After 100 years you won't get the accent. Maybe you don't know, but at some age is very difficult to learn a language, with the accent.

  • Hello I agree with you....I hate that freaking racist people

  • wow betty!!! i've never seen anyone do a turn that well, everyone is always bobbling and wobbling but she was dead on!!!

  • now they are...did u see the olympics...they sucked!!!! but in 2000 they were the shit!!!

  • Well yes, this year's olympic team isnot as the previous one. But that's because all the2004 gymnasts have retired even Belu and Bitang and all the 2008 team is just out of the junior, and because of Nistor's injury few years ago, and also Izbasa was injured in 2007 and they both suffered a long time of their injures. But though all that, they could still manage to goto the olympics and win the team bronze, and a gold in the FX, and wining the 2008 europeans.. So Do you still think they'r..shit?
