  • One the coolest things I've seen in a long time very responsible mother earth thanks u I'm sure of it

  • Very blessed..awesome testimonial

  • these people are living the dream...this is my goal. I'm so tired of day slaving for someone else, wasting my life making it happen for other people. I hope some day I can achieve this kind of lifestyle...

  • An amazing concept. I'd like to garden, keep chickens, and bees. I'm not sure if I'm responsible enough for goats... I love what they're doing but I see it as a little weird (just my upbringing I suppose). I actually like work (at least working for nice people) and socializing with people in the workplace. I'd do this, but modernize it. I've already created a floor plan for a 4 bedroom house using only 1125 sq feet. Like small, live modern, garden and farm (to an extent) and live well!

  • @cptnsmelly did you consider haveing the garden built into your home? We have some models you may be interested in seeing.

  • Oh my God they're farmers! That's so....WEIRD!

  • People you are brilliant! Reporter can not believe how you can be happy without money.. :D he says you wouldnt pay for salad, why would you, you can make it from scratch! And calling you odd, just because you dont have mountains of debt like every other person nowadays.. What a homo! haha You are great inspiration, greetings from Slovakia! Keep in touch and keep exchanging your ideas with us :D

  • you are doing a fantastic job , great respect ! All the best and greetings from Germany

  • I heard the feds are cracking down on this, the new world order doesn't want self-suffiency,

    only poverty

  • Off the grid is the next big thing.

  • A year-long warm climate is a big advantage

  • That's awesome !!

I hope he don't shit in the bushes for fertilizer ,,,, That don't fly with me ...

  • Hand-cranked blender. Nice.

This family is ready for armageddon.

  • great idea to be self reliant. - stupid idea to trademark the term 'homesteading' as these tools did, thus outlawing the use by anyone. how the H does the ideas of 'trying to stay outside of modern society' and trademarking words go together ? duh.

  • Well personally, I think these people are great! I live on four acres, and we are building a house on 30 acres. I raise a good portion of our food. This guy gives me something to work toward!

  • why does the reported have to repeat everything he says 3 times?

  • Google: Geoff Lawton

  • better than being a slave to the rat race of working 14 hour days when all that goes to debt, when living self-sufficent you have more freedom, yeah its something not everyone would do but you have time for other things in life to enjoy.

  • So inspirational and beautiful.

  • I personally would love to meet this man ( father!!) I have something in common with him. I love to plant fruit and vegetables and flowers. and would like to raise farm with you. . I would want to connect with you Sir!! and your daughters. my email address lettyrosero@gmail.com God bless you!! Planning to buy farm land so I can do more including raising organic animals like chicken, pig, and goats, ducks and eanthing that i can afford to take care.

  • @mampirao1 You can connect with us at info[at]urbanhomestead[dot]org

  • They have a name for 30 year old kids living at home without a job, they're called bums.

  • @orbhot You call living off of your own food being a bum?

  • i hope he`s paying his fare share of "road" taxes on his fuel !!

  • my aunt does this (shes 28) she moved away and started organic farming with her husband (in france, part of WOOFing) its amazing,,, no streess, always people coming fomr all around the world to learn...weed everywhere... fucking amazing

  • At least he don't have to worry about his grocery bill.

  • Makes capitalism look like a tool for old geezers to make other people force each other to work for the former.

  • @Unbeginner They *are* capitalists. They grow food - a PRODUCT - and SELL it. They can do this because they previously produced and saved enough to invest that capital into something productive. They trade freely with people who want their products and who are happy to give them money in exchange.

  • Inspiring

  • Wait till the city disallows the raising of farm animals in the city. What do you do for flour and sugar.

  • Wait till the city disallows the raising of farm animals in the city. What do you do for flour and sugar.

  • I love this family, it is a great example because you are closer to nature, animals and your family and it keeps you busy and also going to op shops and doing basic skills is really good to do, but hundreds of people throughout the world will think it is gay because everyone is to focused on all the new technologies now and has no clue where food comes from now and also how we are destroying the animal kingdom and the planet all for MONEY AND TECHNOLOGY

  • ...envy i do i do...

  • I live on a farm, in the country...I wish all you city people will stay away from the country, because, really, you're just doing more damage than good...

But I am all for you growing up your own gardens, for all means, do that! Just, remember, gardening takes a lot more work than some people think!

  • OMG there's exactly what i want to do! I love collecting weeds for my meals. They are tasty and absolutely free (except for the dressing!) and are more colorful with flowers and seeds. <3

  • Its easy to do in Pasadena. Lets see one where they do it in a cold climate

  • Amazing lifestyle!!! I am really impressed by this! Even if we have 50 percent of the worlds population living like this mother earth would have been more kind to us.

  • Wow! I love the compost bin too!

  • does eating like this make big booty's or does it run in the family?

  • What dummie disliked this? This IS the American dream, how we all did it before technology was embedded into our brain.

  • They got it good! Everyone should have it this good.No elitest crap being shoved in their face. And most of all,They broke free from slavery!

  • Sounds great, but someone is a fool for paying $13 for a salad.

  • Inspiring...

  • not to many parents dont even know how to teach there kids how to do things like this. im doing this now growing my own vegetables and fruits and chickens for eggs

  • Not verified, but I've heard soon Monsanto, will patent all vegetables and have only hybrids and if you save the seeds they won't reproduce so you will have to buy seeds every year, Anyone with seeds like these folks here should keep growing in order to keep seeds of they're own, probably another way for government to ensure control of us.

  • We have a wonderful summer garden and only wish we could do this but we have a limited growing season in Ohio. :(

  • THE IRS WILL BE THERE TO TAX HIM ON HIS FOOD THANKS TO THIS NEWS REPORT.

  • "Farmers are kinda hard to find in L.A." - understatement of the year!

  • Living in harmony with nature! how beautiful!

  • In other cities you would be called a terrorist, in fact one woman was threatened with 93 days in jail for having a garden bed in her front yard. This is an amazing example of the healthy living that can be achieved through the resourcefulness of the human spirit (no nanny state needed).

  • My ARMPITS ITCHY

  • @OntarioPrepper I'm not sure if you're referring to this video or not, but I found this report quite fair and reasonable. But yes, mainstream media can turn people who do things sustainably without relying on the consumerism economy 'oddballs'.

  • Hehe I hope they found these solar panels on the curb as well =)

  • Keep away from those shitty Monsanto--'suicide'--seeds.

  • What a legend this guy is! Good on him. It's true that this lifestyle is a personal choice and may not be for everyone. But what happens when that choice is taken away ie. when economies start falling over (like they are poised to do)? This lifestyle will be the only way to get by, and those who have criticised others in the past will struggle. It's funny how people "stereotype" these folk as hippies or nutjobs, but self-sufficiency can be rewarding and fun.

  • @howzadog IDIOTS like EatMyDuck84 are useless eaters that will be begging for food when the crunch comes! Read the Ringing Cedars Books for inspiration, and hope to heal the planet, and it's inhabitants.

  • Thank you I think more people need to look more closely at what they consume and take less frome farther then they need to

  • I really enjoy this video, in a way, they r like amish I guess, but I have to have meat, darm it, I like beef, and i didnt see no cows, they need to move to a farm, thats what they need, being self sufficient is hard work at all times, ina society where fast food and super walmart, it becomes to some. a dream, to others, a nightmare

  • That's living. Only difference is id be doing it close to the ocean in New Zealand where i will be able to eat like a king.

  • OMG!!! BEBEH GOAT!!! :D

  • WINNING .

  • I love how blown away the reporter is by simple things like *GASP!* A hand cranked blender!!!! I grew up similar to this, and so did ALL humans before about 80 years ago. Funny how normal living from the abundance of the Earth is now an "Alternative Lifestyle" You'd think they lived on the Moon with the way these clueless talking heads blather on about it. I hate to tell them, but their little plastic consumer world is O-V-E-R & anyone not living this way is gonna starve.

  • he grows food.... and then he eats it. fucking brilliant

  • @EatMyDuck84 Alright, how do you dislike this video?

  • @EatMyDuck84 do you?

  • The news media calls this an "alternative life style". How ironic. The majority of us humans today live more unnaturally than in all of history. And yeah, what TheThomShow commenter said - agreed :-(

  • The reporters were so damn condescending. That kinda pisses me off.

  • O ha

  • superlike

  • I think the best part about this story is that it shows how this man and his family achieved this over time. There was a learning curve but they kept going. Whenever people ask our family about living off grid, they are jealous but doubtful they could do it. This guy clearly took things a few steps at a time.

The important thing is just to take the first step.

  • COOL !

  • I bet the new anchor is uber jealous. I know he didn't want that haircut! Obey the Man, haha.

  • 20 dislikes?

  • Wow...this family has done it! Freedom! Self-sustainability--in the city, without a farm, without land. Can you imagine? Being truly free? Quite inspiring! They even have their own web site. Way cool!

  • wow! these people are the richest people in the world! they control their own destiny, their lives are their own. no one owns them, they are so free! i think that we all can learn a little from them. and they all look happy. very inspirational people.

  • How kool! I would love more info about having a yard like this.

  • Uhmmm... just wait and see what I'll get out of a balcony-garden.. Australia here we come!

  • I wish i could live like them I am trying though. Real fun growing chickens and food !

  • Just outside Los Ang......les.

  • One big problem with this. The greedy politicians. Large farming corporations don't want little business competitors. They pay off politicians to make laws to shut down the small operators. Right now in Illinois (2011), a Senator is trying to pass a law in Congress that makes it illegal to grow, use, sell, trade, or give away anything that is grown at home, whether it's a small farm, or back yard garden. Check it out on the net, and write your congressman.

  • I was planning to do this when I retire but more of an emphasis on on fruit and nuts

  • You see on my channel i doing a real original style of living in a astro van doing business online.Living on superfoods an laughing at the world.

  • When are you going to comment about all the money you have cost the Denver Urban Homestead farmers group?

  • I have a a sm farm on 8 acres and looking to get onother 20 in Myakka or Arcadia Fl.

Going organtic Cattle, pigs meat and egg chickens and crops my wife is an RN. I have always just been A Fl. cracker and love it. I hope it all works out for me and my family of five. I have always tryed to live off the land and love it fishing, hunting and farming Also I do all my own butchering and farming so a store front for my products is also a dream.

  • I wonder what they claim on there taxes? will they have to get 1099 forms from the restaurants? More power too them

  • I believe if more people would do this we could cure the world. However, it takes effort from us all. I live in a apartment complex and when I look around there is a large patch of ground in the middle of the complex where a community garden could be grown. And if every apartment complex would put up solar panels on their roofs they would save money, the renters would save money and the earth would be better for it. But, of course, these things take time. We all just need to all pull together.

  • Need to get one of those blenders! These people rock!

  • Did you notice the beauty of the father's skin? He's no spring chicken, but his skin is in incredible condition - that's from eating a high proportion of raw greens and fruit folks!

  • the stupidity of the journalist's questions and comments show how lost we are..

  • This is wonderful, on so many levels. Amazing lifestyle!

  • This will piss of the status quo. And good for these folks

  • good work, we should all do this

  • this is AWESOME, i do hate money and having to go work for someone else being their slave. im all about Resource Based Economies like Atlas City and the Zeitgeist Movement just to name a few.

  • Just remarkable. The Dervaes are American role-models and my heroes/heroines. Many more of us should be following their lead even just partially. It is beautiful, healthy, good for the country, good for the environment, and gardening is great fun and very fulfilling. I am moving in this direction.... just need to convince the husband who grew up like the Dervaes in eastern Europe.

  • Awesome and inspiring mom & pop business!

  • I wish I could live like this.

  • I LOVE this! Two green thumbs up for this family, and they can thumb their noses at Monsanto.

  • this vid is awesome!! however IMO those who understand stocks can make a living with the push or a button. doesnt get much easier than that. I would like to have both worlds.

  • we should have all been so blessed to be raised like that .

  • I like 90% of this, but not so much the techno-reverse style of reverting back to old systems when we have the ability to do better. For example, the OmegaGarden system on their property would require 1% the water, no soil, and generate 2 to 3 times the yield over their standard practices. People can do this in less space with more efficiency, using technology, not abandoning it. Just google OmegaGarden and you'll see.

  • @TZMSocialEvolution "For example, the OmegaGarden system on their property would require 1% the water, no soil, and generate 2 to 3 times the yield over their standard practices."

That's bullshit Doug. you really need to stop buying the claims made in sales literature. A lot of the plants that the Dervaes family wouldn't grow in the OmegaGarden and at $2,000 for an 80 plant unit with each unit requiring 10 gallons a week you'd have to be insane to think that the Omega was a good investment.

  • @justintempler lol. Considering I've personally talked to the inventor of the system several times, and I know about upcoming developments that YOU don't, I'm sure I'm not just "buying" anything. Nothing I say will ever matter to you anyway. All you want to do is be confrontational because you dislike TZM and what TVP proposes. Very well, we're done. You get the last word...make it a good one.

  • @TZMSocialEvolution "Considering I've personally talked to the inventor...."

I'm sure the inventor counts on people like you that are too ignorant to realize who OmegaGarden's customers really are. That way he gets free advertising. You don't spend $2,000 on a ferris wheel to grow 80 basil plants or 80 heads of lettuce or 80 marigolds but you do spend $2,000 to grow 80 marijuana plants.

You know that leafy green herb that flowers and grows real well hydroponically in confined spaces. pot?

  • Did he say that he has his children 'trained' well? I think I would have choose a different word.

  • @keithallenlaw Correct me if I'm wrong but I think you're trying to apply values on lingo from a pc-gone-wild society into what to me seems like a much simpler existence and where words are words and don't have deeper or less nobler (according to our own biases) connotations. Just wondering... what words or phraseology would you suggest?

  • @keithallenlaw Jules is a control freak who was booted out of the conservative evangelical church they belonged to, and subsequently spent 3 YEARS picketing it with his kids, Phelps-style.

His children were homeschooled and have no social life. Tending the farm takes up all their time, and they have no interaction with others except for the meals they host at their house under Jules' watchful eye. His big dream is to start a Jim Jones-like compound in S. America. and charge people to join. UGH

  • @Sharoney Thanks for the update. You must know them are someone next to them. Is there anything that can be done to help them? Best wishes for them.

  • @Sharoney I was kind of thinking the same thing while watching the video. What kind of logic is it to embark on something that entirely depends of keeping your adult children there for free labor? What's going to happen if and when they decide they want to have lives of their own and move away?

  • I was raised this way, so it's commonplace to my thinking. I hope those of you who love this vid, and it's moves you, to actually do something about it, and quit just loving it from a distance. It's easy, gais, srsly. Just handle your shit. Ur already on the internet, the knowledge of how is a google away.

  • seriously beautiful. live would be so much less STRESSFUL!

  • I LOVE this family and this video!!! I've seen it several times and feel that they can teach all of us something. The Dervaes ROCK-just steer clear of MONSANTO and their FRANKENFOODS~

  • In the United Socialist States of America? not buying it. If the farmers are being regulated, taxed and fined to the degree THEY can't stay in business, then a little old Mom and Pop family such as this--IN CALIFORNIA OF ALL PLACES-- are surely going to catch flack. Let's hear that part. Let's us be told what the Feds are doing about their supposedly completely free and independent Oasis.

  • Simply amazing family I bet the Department of Agricultural will pay em a visit now just because many will follow Thats what Goverments do They'll go to the fear tactic to discourge sheeples from growing their own food

  • the guy has the right idea

  • I would love to live like this. If every family had a garden like this, we would be living in a paradise. The government and the ruling elite, obviously HATE this kind of lifestyle because it makes families strong and independent of others for their survival. They don't want us strong and independent, they want working drones that they can control.

  • @AnduinX this comment reinforces my reasoning for voting conservative in EVERY election... Freedom vs Governmental Dependancy...

  • @AnduinX yer right, Randy Weaver tried it,The Branch Davidians had a self sustaining farm too,now we have chemtrail spraying aluminium, strontiumand barium on to the soil making it alkaline and poisoning the water, while Monsanto is forcing farmers to buy genetic modified seeds resistant to aluminum soils.Food as a weapon, silent weapons for quiet wars and a depopulation agenda,See Michael Murphy's film (What in the WORLD ARE THEY SPRAYING?) Its free on the net to watch.Heirloom seeds will be gone!

  • @AnduinX Well if every family was like this we wouldn't have the flexibility to do other things, scientific research requires a lot of time, becoming a doctor etc. You can't run a farm at the same time. A few farm for the many because it's efficient. Not to say the current system is perfect, but a better solution is more difficult than everyone doing this.

  • @Khyrid Agree. Whilst this life at first glance this is appealing. Everyone dreams of being self sufficient. BUT if everyone did, nothing else would ever get done like you say. Even this family still rely on the fact that there are people that spend money in restaurants.

  • @Khyrid: This is not a large farm. Real farms span many acres and require full time farmers to tend the fields. If taken as a job, I think only one family member would be required to maintain a field like this, and I doubt it would be full time work. Most of the work would come initially as you build and setup the various structures to hold all of these plants. If one family member could do this at home it frees the others to do other things (like become doctors).

  • Comment removed

  • @AnduinX Perhaps, and with modern technology that could make it more practical. Still how would we structure our society so pretty much one person from each household has to be a farmer, I think many wouldn't go along with it. I think there are better solutions out there.

  • @Khyrid : With modern growing methods there's no need for anyone to become a full-time farmer in order to grow their own meat and vegetables in their backyard.

  • @AnduinX I agree with what you said...also, there are those in government that want to keep people slaves to them through entitlement programs. That they get the money through taxing those that do work and those the create jobs..

  • will a book be written to help us who grew up in the city, i don't anything about farming, didn't even know you can make your own fuel, it would be a blessing to everyone.

  • I am shocked that monsanto has not sent the feds to shut you down. Or that California has not come up with a ton of stupid rules and regulations you have to follow. This may catch-on very soon because of the food situation in the world.

  • @Hutzjohn very true...with all there new laws im suprised there not called ''terrorists'' LOL

  • @bikerboyzx he he he. That is funny... :))

  • I love this! This is the way it's meant to be! Thanks for sharing!

  • That's cool how they even make their own gasoline...

  • AWESOME!!

  • nice lifestyle; i'm sure the gov will find a way to make something up and shut them down sadly

  • Anarchism/Marxism IS hating working 9-to-5 for someone else, and being a slave to paying bills. That is the definition of what Marx called "alienation"- the prevalent situation in a capitalist society ridden with hierarchies, working jobs you hate to buy stuff you don't need.

  • Jules I love everything you have done with your life, wow you are trully a visionary. I am just so impressed. I want to find a way to live again as independant and self sufficient, just like in the good old days. When you have all the bills out of the way it's alot easier to enjoy life and help others. I'm very impressed that your children are so in tune with you, I would expect them to think your crazy. I'm looking to find a woman like your daughter one day, I have hope once again.

  • Jules, you're an Inspiration!!!Keep up the great work!!!

  • Great story! Still, there's some things I don't understand. How do they pay their water bill, electric bill, car registration, insurance, property tax, health care and all the farming equipment and supplies if none of them have jobs? Los Angeles suburbs don't allow livestock , how do they deal with that? How on earth do they deal with the zoning and code inspectors, health department and business licensing? This type of people is what will save America!

  • @alpidistra

How do they pay their water bill, electric bill, car registration, insurance, property tax, health care and all the farming equipment and supplies if none of them have jobs?

they make over 30k by selling food that they produce, well over there needs.. (thats what they have told you) but i bet you that they make more, especaily if a salad sells for 13 bucks pot (damn)

  • @alpidistra

    they sell the excess food

did you watch the part about the neighbours going there to buy eggs?

  • @BassGoesBoom1 The business license and health dept compliance itself would be enough to eat up whatever pennies they could make by selling eggs! How did they pay for that solar panel system on the roof? How do they support an entire family of people who don't have jobs with eggs and lettuce leaves? There has to be another source of income to finance all this. They probably get financing from some environmental foundation pushing post-industrialism.

  • This is what I would call a genius lifestyle. Maximum independence, and everything you have is the pride of your own innovation and hard work. What an incredibly liberating feeling it must have been to get off the crazy treadmill that so many people are beholden to. Not only that, but this is obviously an environment-friendly way of living. It may very well be the future...

  • hope, the homeland security will not come and shut the place down, claiming this family is a terrorist cell.

  • "From the GLOBAL resources of blah blah blah."

  • Eh, I tried this. I live at 4,000 ft and we have a very short growing season. Then the deer came in and ate everything. If I could eat pine trees, I'd never starve.

  • @crystalrunez I chewed on some pine needles recently, and they tasted really good. I chewed until I'd gotten all the juice out, then spat out the pulp. I don't think you could live on them long-term, but they would keep you going for a few days I'd say. Add some wild berries and some clean river water and you've got a pretty healthy meal.

  • cant do it but more power to yah

  • Please visit their website 'pathtofreedom' The Dervaes family are an inspiration to us all. I show everyone I know this website and videos, showing them that YES they can grow their own food no matter how much or little land they own! Get out there and start growing and learning.

  • Amazing...lets just hope mum will let me utilise the garden!

  • Bravo !

    Keep up the good work.

Kind regards from Denmark, Europe !

  • WOW YOU ARE SO AWESOME!!!

  • This is pretty amazing.

  • helo :) did you guys ever thing about growing insects for food ? flower worms, grass hoppers and so on.. its cca 10x cheaper to grow 1kg of insects protein then 1kg lets say red meat. because thats what im kinda looking for :D great job with the garden btw.

  • Shame I can't turn my backyard into my own farm.

  • @LudicrouslyLuis YOU CAN MY FRIEND, google "spin farm". You're welcome :)

  • So amazing, a true American dream come real.

  • Stock up on seeds now before Monsanto takes over the world....

  • An Alternative to the Children of High Fructose Corn Syrup, Generation

  • This is a true revolution!

  • @freedomfighterone I thought it was illegal for American's to grow things in their garden as per the S1510 Bill?

  • Independance for the win - these people are my heroes

  • @TheZenoEffect LMAO How long do you think it takes when the brewing company does it? You may not know it, but everybody who drinks waits about 28 days.

  • I was wondering how you will be able to continue to do this with the new 510 law. Have you any idea how this will affect you?

  • @TheZenoEffect I wouldn't doubt it. It's actually very, very simple to make basic alcohol. All you need is water, sugar, yeast, heat and 7 to 28 days.

  • I'm all for living simple, but this is just too simple for me. lol

  • Senate Bill, 510. This bill has been signed into law by Obama.

It will make it illegal to grow, share, sell, transport, process any food product on your land, greenhouse or garden without government approval and creating an impact study. This bill also effects food supplements under UN control.

Please research this draconian Bill and spread the word.

The goal is to control all food you eat or grow and sell by the Federal Government.

Do you want Big Brother telling you what and how to eat?

  • I love it! You're not supporting China. I'd like to do it myself.

  • This is how you do it. The questions about welfare etc. are so silly. People are so dependent, lazy and lost it's really sad. When I was a kid, about 15 years ago, we did the same on less land no room for animals. In fact most families in our very suburban neighborhood had nice gardens and fruit trees. I just hope the sociopath government in California does not send in the jackboot thugs looking for an eighth of a piece of rotted fruit which "may cause a heath issue if eaten".

  • Awesome!!! God bless them and their home.

  • This is awesome, but as far as Uncle Sam is concerned they can go from being hip to being terrorists in one congressional session. At the very least they will have to pay some type of tax for the bio-fuel, land use, etc etc, The man don't like it when you beat him at his own game

  • These ppl are awesome!!

  • It will be illegal to do this in most states soon. Check it out.

  • Well, at least i'm sure i do better than they do for one thing. I have my haircut 100% free of electricity and on my own. I use only scissors, razor, two mirrors, with no electrical hair shaver and no assistance ;-)

  • This is great !

  • You have inspired me so much. I have always been green but got away from it a little. I used to have a mini farm on my property years ago when my children were young. Grew everything and canned it too. We were into meat then, but, not anymore. I am now in my fifties and have always been somewhat still into the garden , but, since I saw your video I am now commited even more to turning my small area into all garden instead of flowers. I thank you for inspiring me and getting me back on the path .
