He's basically just telling her to be direct about whether she still wants to date him or not so he will know whether he should move on or not, rather than allow her to just play games with him, since that's really childish or whatever. From what I remember people weren't that upfront back in the 80's. And he feels bad but he'll survive either way, just like he said. I think it's nice he found someone else though.
