I love this take of Subdivisions. Last week I uploaded Broon's Bane & The Trees on piano, and I am pleasantly surprised at the reaction. The one thing, I already met Rush at RCMH in NYC 28 years ago with Q-107! Jacob you are very talented. We should do a song some day.
I was ready to criticise without giving this guy a real chance. Glad I decided to give it a proper listen. What a great cover. Totally put his own mark on the song yet still remained faithful to the original. Spot on.
It's so common to find on youtube very nice covers of famous rock songs with more than 50% of dislikes, especially when acoustic versions are made. I think that the 1975 people who liked this against only 19 that disliked show how Rush fans are more open-minded, or simply less prejudicial.
The mere attempt at covering a Rush tune is daunting in the least. All the negative criticism of this piece comes from a bunch of musical hacks. It may be a cover, but it is the most original and inspiring covers of all time. He took an already destined to be classic and transformed it into an acoustical masterpiece and classical cover. If you can do it any better, bring it on!
Truly incredible! I stumbled across this, and I'm glad I did. I gotta tell ya Jacob-that's amazingly well done. Apparently enough so that RUSH agrees as well. The video location captures the inherent spirit of the song. Always wondered how this song would sound slowed down and played acoustic. Now, who the hell are the 17 people that disliked this? What's wrong with you people.
Hey Jacob, I love this - you're playing / coordinating everything is amazing - I've watched it loads of times - please make the MP3 it available for download on iTunes
@MrHellTroll Rush is one of the finest bands that ever graced rock music, they deserve it. This goes to show great song writing is timeless. This sounds very modern, but this song is 30 years old!
@MrHellTroll asked: "Why are you doing this Rush cover bullshit?"
well, it seems to have gotten him 240 thousand views, maybe thousands of new fans, and a chance to play a bunch of places he might not have otherwise... he got to meet the band, which was a great thing if you're a fan... I probably would never have heard of him otherwise... and his version of this song is beautiful and creative... and you have created what, exactly?
@HarrrySpider I'll tell you what this asswipe has created: Two retarded lines that meant to be taken as a "compliment" and an utter gay reply defending his first brain fart. That's all, his 5 days on the spotlight are over. Let's leave it like that.
I agree with you, this is great and different version. Cheers.
I also want to mention that the arrangement befits the methodology of Rush perfectly, namely throwing more than one instrument per person and making them work. As a person having difficulties multi-tasking more than three tasks, how you manage the timing of triggers and switching of guitars in live is beyond me.
Repeated the song over 50 times during the last two months and it grows larger every time I listen. It's a reinvented Subdivisions. Few things make a person happier than having more than one proper version of one's favorite song, and for that I show my gratitude by buying your newest (and equally wonderful) album Maybe Sunshine.
This is the only way a Rush cover works. Really making it your own. Showing us who you are through your music... using what has come before as a guide. Fantastic job.
I usually cringe even at the thought of listening to someone cover a Rush song. And when I saw the acoustic in your hands, I thought "Oh, no...nonono, he's going to *slaughter* Subdivisions." But you did a beautiful rendition of Subdivisions. Very nice, Jacob! Thanks!
@CreatureMontage Canada is a big place.. this is just one spot. From the video it looks a lot like much of the Pacific Northwest in USA (Washington state and oregon)..
@skibothy Yes, the solo acoustic singer/songwriter thing with loopers and multiple instruments has been done to death, not only in Nashville but everywhere else. However, most of the people who have made it a cliche have less than a quarter of the talent, versatility and musicality displayed here. If I had to pick one person to represent the genre as a whole, it'd have to be Moon.
I've been watching your videos for the past hours and have seen quite some talent and what appears to be Keaggy influence. I'd love to try and connect to work something out whether it be performing together or recording together. Be blessed.
@JStraw7103 That was the 17 people on the crew who hauled Jacob's gear, plus the camera gear and lighting equipment, up 4 flights of stairs and a ladder, then back down when it was over.
Wow! Nice interpretation of a classic. Nice use of the DVR & the Looper. Playing a Godin on a rooftop in a Toronto Suburb, Perfect! You just picked up a new fan in NY. And once I forward this to all my Rush friends, my guess is that you will have some more.
Watched this again today. What a beautiful re-imagining of this song by Jacob Moon. The Rush original has been a favorite of mine for literally decades. Moon's take surpasses the emotional heft of the original, revealing surprising emotional depth within Neil Peart's lyric.
Stuck for words.. But I'll try... To take a synthesized heavy track from such a coveted band of our time and switch it into your performance is beyond words. It could so easily been cheesy, but it is far from that. It was thought through, with every bar calculated to perfection. Completely inspired by you. xx
I wonder if Getty Lee, Eric Liefson, and, Neil Peart have seen this...... Incredible. Well done freind... You should do lime light and Tom Sawyer...... Keep it up. Instant sub.
