Its a ruse that this show was "against ethnic bigotry". Many Americans parroted Archies' anti-Polish slurs after watching this show. There is a reason why Archie was called "A loveable bigot". It was to make his anti-Polish bigotry as acceptable as possible to Americans.
This is one of various anti-Polish shows that reflect the anti-Polish bigotry of the left-wing Hollywood bigots who produced them.
The producer of this show, Norman Lear, claimed this show was supposed to be "against ethnic bigotry" by making Archie "look bad". Many Polish Americans feel this is BS, since the 1970's, the time when this show ran, was the peak of anti-Polish joke slurs in the US.
Many Polish Americans were harrased with the same anti-Polish slurs that Archie made. Polish people were ridiculed and mocked as being "dumb Polacks" and "Meatheads" all throughout the US when this show ran.
This is one of the few token times where "All in the Family" portrayed Polish people in a sympathetic light.
Many of the other times, Mike the Polish guy is ridiculed with anti-Polish Nazi subhuman intelligence jokes, with Mike looking like a bafoon. This was the objective of the Left-wing producer Norman Lear, to push out over the airwaves into the minds of millions of Americans.... anti-Polish slurs.
Although Archie degraded various groups, the Polish got it the worst.
I just love how the Jewish producer put things from a WW2 point of view cause Germany hated Poland , nothing wrong with Polish people, they are White!
It would have been even more fun if they had brought on Edith's cousin, Maude, for this wedding. Could you have imagined Bea Arthur in the middle of all this?
Imagine that: back in those days parents didn't have to have the sex talk with their kids until when they decided to get married. Now what's the age for the sex talk? 12? God help us. "Those were the days" indeed.
@shewstring2000 Yes, but oh how rare that is anymore. Especially for both the man and woman to be virgins. It hardly happens these days, i'm afraid. Unfortunately, my boyfriend and I will not be pure for ours. I mean, in this day and age, 7 and a half years of dating while simultaneously remaining virtuous would prove to be nearly impossible. But I suppose the whole point of love making is that we share it with someone that we care deeply for, & plan to forever. Some of us still do that.
What's really funny is how one person can figure out what an entire nation thinks. It seems to me that a lot of the humor in AITF is precisely about both the liberal and conservative figures doing exactly the same thing.
America can have the "kiss" between Sammy Davis and Archie as their funniest AITF moment. My two personal ones are: (1. Archie, drunk and locked in the cellar, leaving Irene what he thought was an after-death "razzberry" for adjusting the cellar door too tightly, and (2. the one in this segment, Edith playing the Wedding March in a minor key, and the toilet flushing, clearly audible to all the wedding guests. HILARIOUS!!!
Yes that's true. And that's a major, not minor. The piano is out of tune and Edith plays poorly. Although Jean and Maureen Stapleton both were excellent pianists.

Maybe it's because I'm a music theory nerd, but hearing the wedding march played in minor absolutely kills me! XD

Mike's uncle is cool & clever; he made sure the judge that marries Mike&Gloria is polish. Look at Archie's face - LOL

@cmammlj I love the part where the judge says that he's free to do this kind of service because "we Polish folk have to stick together."
