This was on the radio when I was little boy......I asked my dad what the words mean....He was right...I was too small to be cool in the 60s.....I was just big enough to ask some good questions.
Always loved this song, it's up there with The turtles' song " Happy Together", and The Troggs' "Love Is All Around". I call it "folk rock", others call it "bubblegum", I don't care, it's just good.
All these modifications of words back then have ruined my spelling capabilities of today and I'm being pounced by the internet gramar nazies on a constant.
I'm 26 now but from toddler-hood to adulthood, I always had a radio in my room &Ii would secretly listen to it all night when I was supposed to be asleep. I heard this 1 for the first time in 6th grade & it made me cry. Within a month I had The Byrds Box Set lol.
Me being a black man, growing up in the 60s I loved just as many white bands/singers as I did blacks in those days because all we had was AM radio so we got a chance to listen to all the music. I knew all the groups/bands/singers who were white oh, and TV was showing us many of the groups on dance shows. Today I don't who is who and the music sucks but I know who the groups/singers back in the day. This song was one of my favorites.
@Vincent50 : Me being a white man, growing up at about the same time, I loved many of the black musicians. They could sing and play music with such incredible passion ( Roberta Flack would probably have been my favourite, but there were many others ). Music is universal.
my very good friend Doyle passed away this morning. He will be dearly missed and this song is along the lines of the music he always preferred listening to...so for you big man, I'll play this today in your memory. RIP
I used this song as the theme for my class of 1969 yearbook, thereby getting around any ban on quoting Scripture. Plus I liked the Byrds' song. It was an appropriate song for a high school senior class, leaving things behind and starting adulthood.
My Brother passed away this past Saturday Jan. 7th, 2012, His Funeral is today Jan. 11, 2012, Rest in Peace John he was 55 and grew up with this Music.
The lyrics are almost completely a direct quote from the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible; King Solomon supposedly wrote that book when he was an old man, so the Byrds gave him credit for writing the lyrics of the song. That makes this song the #1 hit with the oldest lyrics in history.
I love this song and have to admit that for years and years I thought it was sung by The Beatles (hides in shame) HAVE NOT COME ACROSS SONGS LIKE THESE NOW A DAYS :(
I remember my father died and I was sitting wondering why this happened to me..and than this song came on the radio and I heard the words so clearly..than I realized it is part of Gods plan......peace.
@Dojocho oh, God bless you...I have had so many experiences like that with songs on the radio....very uncanny. I remember when I was taking my dying cat to the vet and the song You'll be in My Heart (Phil Collins) came on the radio and cried buckets..and I will never forget it..I can't listen to the song now without crying. Funny thing is, I never knew the words to the song before and never paid any attention to it until that day, and the words jumped out at me very loud and clear.
@Dojocho My sympathy at your Father's death! It's surprising when and from what we hear God's reassuring Truth. Even a popular song can be God's way to speak to us. A retired Catholic priest in Canada.
I saw McGuinn play in the late eighties or early nineties at The World of Wheels custom car show. There were maybe 30 people there. He came in dressed in full black leather and opened up the guitar case and played with his band. It felt kind of wierd -- a Rock God playing for virtually no one. I had appreciation for the chance to hear him play, less then 10 feet away,
For me this is the quintessential '60s song. Pete Seeger's adaptation of the Ecclesiastes passage and the Byrds' vocals and instrumentation come together in an absolutely perfect arrangement. One of my top 10 songs of all time.
@toolkien ~ So The Byrds ripped off Tom Petty, eh? Why don't you be more specific about that claim ~ seriously dude. You have no idea what your talking about. When Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark and Chris Hillman first met, at The Troubadour, in West L.A., in early 1964 ~ your boy, Tom Petty, was 13 years old. So what exactly are all of us, save for you, missing here toolkien???? I'm waiting, we're all waiting, for your explanation as to how The Byrds screwed Tommy over. Tell us, oh wise one.
@TripleJ807 well... from 50s to 70s yes, i think after neil young, ramones, led zep... the music havent suffered a singificative change. Ok, we've got michael jackson, nirvana and all that, but its not as innovating as music was in the 60s.
@ASpanishguy Spanish guy, I'm not sure what your concept of time and "we" is. MJ's musical career was basically from the mid-60s (when he was 5) to maybe 1990. After that, about the only thing he did was choreograph and perform his large-group dance numbers, mostly onstage. The pinnacle of his commercial success was Thriller in 1982. Nirvana was 1987 to 1994. What are you trying to say?
@Baritone45 when i said "we" i was trying to say, later, near of our time, maybe i didnt express myself right.
What i tried to say, (and man, i think its not so hard to understand) is that music was really innovating from 50s to 70s... and after that there are only a few important musicians... MJ musical career began in the 60s, yes. Was MJ innovating in the 60s? NO.
Shalom is MORE that peace, it can not be transliterated in one word in english. It (shalom) means, wholeness, both spiritually, physically, soundness of mind, to be turned into the path of life, the inner rest that only YHWH can give. Can't beat singing scripture. :) Check out Sons of Korah.

My Dad also loves oldies, and my Mother use to play hymns a lot.
Amazing song... amazing band.. from a time where good guys were doing great music.... and about the Beatles ... sorry ... Beatles rules.....but Byrds.... rules too.... hehehe...
If there is a time for this music to come back, there is a time to celebrate, and a time to meditate. Please let me know ... hearing this song makes me happy and sad ... I much prefer it to today's music, especially the songs about killing cops or acting slutty.
Someone came on one of these Byrd videos and cried "I hate the Byrds!" I don't know, but that's kind of like sayin you hate...air...or something- I like a lot of sick music like Slayer, Throbbing Gristle, psycho shit-but these guys can't be denied, I mean right? Idk, might been some bad crack the poor sap was on, I'll try to b positive peace out
this song is good yet clumsy. It could've been so much better. The chorus ("turn turn turn") is very cool. However when they start the "a time to be loved... a time to die.." stansa I just can't help frowning.
There is no such thing as "world peace" the sooner we accept that, the better we'll be.....sorry, that's just the way it is. And if you don't think like that, study your world history.....
Can you imagine any of today's groups performing this? This music of teh Byrds is beautiful. And words straight out of the Good Book! All we get now is purile rubbish from rock bands--not forgetting the sheer crassness & vulgarity. It makes me realize how blessed I was to be a youth in the 1960s. I despair for the kids of today who don't have any kind of music that comes remotely near to this.
@Fingalful um, i think you need to branch out and actually discover more bands from this era. there are so many wonderful bands, they're just not being played on the radio. don't "despair" for the kids of today, it just makes you sound so obnoxious.
Open your Bibles to the Book of Ecclesiastes chapter 3. That's where this song comes from.
"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness" 2 Timothy 3:16
@cruisebumify Glad to see your comment; I think some people may not know about Ecclesiastes. Good reading, good advice, and good music. We all have a purpose under heaven...and yes, the rain falls on the just and unjust alike.
you summed it up well. But good ole Far West violence has been championed as a positive U.S. trait for too long. And all these endless wars are the outcome. greed and Violence.
@andreaprodan and the sickest thing of all, is that far too many people, here in the states, don't get it,or, don't give a shit. yet, they've no problem, pounding their supercilious chests, about what fucking good capitalist christians they are. thats' why, it's all now falling apart at the wheels. karma is a bitch....
This is a song from my "era" and it takes me right "home". It is a song that got in me right away and never left. Many songs from that time are like that. This song works just as well today as it did then.
To me, this song will always be the quintessential 60's song. When I hear it, I see images of soldiers hopping out of choppers into tall grass, people doing the twist, the guys giving the Black Power sign at the 68 Olympics, war protesters, RFK shaking the hands of supporters, Twiggy, scenes from Easy Rider...
The time for change is now being seen as self evident all across the globe and the people are turn, turn, turning away from greed and coruption.Yes they can and yes they have.Take care ADonovan43
This song and others sung by the Byrds, were a BIG part of sound-track of the best part of my youth. I love the 12-string guitar sound, the wonderful harmonies, the impeccable timing and professional production values of this group - they just had the "Complete Package"!!
Maravilhosa lembrança dos meus tempos de juventude fisica. A boa musica jamais morrerá.. são imortalizadas por grandes musicos. Congratulações a quem postou esse clip..
@HippieJimi That was a very nice tribute. Hard to believe it's been 10 years today since that horrible day in New York City, when the Twin Towers were destroyed :( I still get very emotional to this day.
I was watching Good Morning America's special tribute to 9/11 today, and former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani quoted this bible saying, and that's what got me to listen to this great song today.
@1962drob Thank you 1962...yes 10 years, but it seems like yesterday....and believe it or not,I was watching Rudy G. also...that got me thinking too,...small world eh....Glad ya liked it...and you stay Cool now...Peace Jimi :-)....
@1962drob Thank you Dean, that means a lot......So Brooklyn heh.....well I won't hold that against ya...LOL....just kidding....Do ya ever watch the Dead End Kids?......I'm from Philly BTW.....were 100 miles apart...but were on the same page so to speak.....OK then Dean, you take care Buddy...as the Tubes song goes...."I'll Talk To Ya Later"....Jimi :-)
@TheWHITEDEVIL1488 LISTEN ASSHOLE, YOU´RE TRYING TO BE NAZI??? YOU DON´T BELONG TO THE MASTER RACE,NO GERMAN, FORGOT FAGGOT??? YOU´RE JUST A FUCKING LITTLE AMERICAN SCUMBACK, COCKSUCKING RACIST.AND YELLOW...
@TheWHITEDEVIL1488 ..firstly l would suggest you go to a night class to learn the basics of the queens english..in a few decades when you have evolved the power of basic thought and stopped dragging your knuckles on the ground maybe we can chat....when you can give a reply without useing "potty talk" (thats swearing to you clutas!) and dont engage in rascist banter, than maybe....just maybe we will let you marry your sister.

I despair for the kids of today who don't have any kind of music that comes remotely near to this.
Fingalful 2 months ago 3

And all these endless wars are the outcome. greed and Violence.
andreaprodan 3 months ago
@andreaprodan and the sickest thing of all, is that far too many people, here in the states, don't get it,or, don't give a shit. yet, they've no problem, pounding their supercilious chests, about what fucking good capitalist christians they are. thats' why, it's all now falling apart at the wheels. karma is a bitch....

This is a song from my "era" and it takes me right "home". It is a song that got in me right away and never left. Many songs from that time are like that. This song works just as well today as it did then.

I grew up in the 80's and still love this song.
MrClassicExample 3 months ago
To me, this song will always be the quintessential 60's song. When I hear it, I see images of soldiers hopping out of choppers into tall grass, people doing the twist, the guys giving the Black Power sign at the 68 Olympics, war protesters, RFK shaking the hands of supporters, Twiggy, scenes from Easy Rider...

I had always that this was a beautifully performed song.
Thanks for allowing the full end to play. Always liked that little 'extra snap' provided by the drums.
Many Than(x)!! for this post.

This song and others sung by the Byrds, were a BIG part of sound-track of the best part of my youth. I love the 12-string guitar sound, the wonderful harmonies, the impeccable timing and professional production values of this group - they just had the "Complete Package"!!

It's been 10 years...Turn Turn Turn....
10 Million tears...Turn Turn Turn...
We ache in side, but still have our pride...
We'll never forget that 3000 died...
We thank all the countries, who stood by our side...
The enemies run,but they can't hide...
Some people say,our leaders have lied...
Others will say, they got a free ride...
We've been through a lot,and millions have cried....
Times running out,it's not on our side....

PEACE TO YOU MY FRIEND :)
