Both Malcom and Grant have concerns about the safety of the park, and are not convinced that the people in control of the park have a full understanding of what they have unleashed into the world. This is clear in both the film and the novel. In this scene, both characters are concerned. Dr. Grant is attempting to re-assure himself by trivializing the power outage and Malcolm focuses on the potential fear of the kids. Both characters are showing a CLEAR case of projection.
I'd love to put my two cents in, but only if those that have already contributed so well to this topic are interested. I'll give a sample of my opinion : Ian has a daughter in Jurassic Park II (I'm certain it was II) Now I'm not sure if he adopted, or married into that one after the events of Jurassic I took place. But given this scene I'm willing to tie in Ian already has her as his daughter.
@Skycrusher Thus, in this position, Ian would have some experiance and knowledge on the subject of "children" hence at that point he's concerned about them. And then the vocal exchange occurs, and..well, that's just a sample.
I don’t think this scene was obvious in intent and meaning such as CoolCooties has said, because one could get several different interpretations from it. That is what makes this scene interesting, but, of course, people can choose to be intellectually lazy and decide not to look much into it and see it possibly in a different way.
1.)I think you misinterpreted the dialogue, but then again we are just assuming as we can't get into the head of Malcolm or the screenwriter. It is Dr. Grant that is not getting it. You are right that Malcolm says “Kids get scared” as an insinuation of Grant’s ignorance of kids psychology, but, as Grant asks, “What’s to be scared of?” and explains that the power just went out, Malcolm is aware that Grant doesn’t think he is scared when he replies, “I didn’t say I was scared.”
@JDrazil88 you are wrong, looks the empty gaze malcom has, clearly his character is in panic, since his chaotic theory got into play and he is on the worse place to be.
2.)Malcolm says it in a calm tone as he is simply implying that Grant should really be asking and reassuring to the kids that there is nothing to be scared of. It makes further sense to me when Grant still doesn’t catch the insinuation and says, “I didn’t say you were scared.” Malcolm further insinuates that Grant doesn’t understand children’s psychology when he replies, “I know,” as he is implying that Grant is really talking to the wrong person here.
3.)Malcolm implies that he agrees there shouldn’t be any reason to be scared, but kids just “...get scared.” There isn’t a big indication that Malcolm was scared, and if the screenwriters wanted to portray him as such then they probably wouldn’t have his character try to lure the T-rex away from the other vehicle a little bit later. It’s about continuity in character and dialogue. The whole conversation connects to a small subplot that Grant never liked or wanted kids in the beginning.
The description isn't over-analysis, it's not even analysis, it's just a description of the scene, and not a very good one! What it seems to be implying is dubious because it should be pretty clear that when Alan says "what's to be scared about? it's just a little hiccup in the power" he's as much trying to convince himself of that than anyone else.
@Shirashama I think it was both, which is exactly why this is so genius. Malcolm _is_ scared (actually both are nervous; look at their faces), plus he realizes (because he likes kids) that the kids are more scared. Grant OTOH (as established earlier) has a hard time connecting with the feelings of kids, hence his replies, the subtexts, and both of their confusion.
All so economically expressed in this complex little conversation. That's why I loved it too, and thanks for posting.
I also think this exchange is actually saying that Malcolm is starting to get scared (and thus it's a hint to the audience that they should be anticipating something bad).
If it was about them being angry with each other, I think Goldblum would hesitated before saying "I know" to show that he's confused and just saying whatever. But he's talking a little faster and they're both running over each other's sentences...meaning they're nervous.
I think that Malcolm is revealing that he is indeed scared of the situation. By asking about the children, it suggests that at his core, Malcolm is little more than one, he hides behind his facade of bravado in order to attract females. There is nothing more to be analyzed in the scene, in my opinion, it simply shows Malcolm's true nature.
I always loved this scene and I felt like I was the only person who actually understood it when I first saw it, confusing since I was a kid with adults when I saw it lol.
actually malcolm did not like the idea of bringing dinosaurs back to life from the beginning because he feared to break earth's life balance... he is a mathematician and theorist so he already thought about the possibilities...but grant was so go getter he believed everything was going to be ok and there was nothing to worry about... as a paleontologist he was really excited to live his dream... malcolm was trying to get him in touch with reality... there were living dinosaurs out there!
Aghh! I love Jurassic Park and Lost World but the only thing that annoyed me was they would talk too fast and they wouldn't speak up so I wasn't able to hear a lot of the things they were saying, and I still don't.
@CoolCooties This isn't an over-analysis. If you know much about cinema analysis as the art form and study that it is, you know that "layered" dialogue is very rare indeed and incredibly hard to write and perform. You almost NEVER see it because it creates a difficult job for the actors, editors, writers, and directors. Upon realizing that, it becomes impressive whenever you see layered dialogue.

Oh lawrdy, I love this scene. Beautiful dialogue. Beautiful. In these short 17 seconds, you get an instant insight into the characters.

Ian refers to the power being out as a major thing to be worried and scared:
"Grant: It's just a minor hiccup in the power. Ian: I didn't say i was scared".
As for Grant, that was not a major thing! He didn't understood the gravity of the situation,...yet!

Lol I love the look on his face after he says 'I didnt say you were scared'

EXPLANATION:
Ian thought Grant was asking what there is to be scared of so Ian felt he had to deny his being afraid but only after that does he realize Grant was talking about the kids.

i think more humorous is when he talks into the camera: Now eventually you do plan to have dinosaurs on your dinosaur tour right? hello, haah?

Another funny scene is when he's sitting alone in that electric car talking to himself, which he also tells himself that he's doing. :D
