@michaelchenglink exactly! used up taskbar space. i may still be on windows XP, i do want windows 7, btu hey, i dont care about IW, as long as i got chrome
@maxshadow Have you tried upgrading to Windows 7? I'm assuming you are using Vista right now since Windows 7 replaced the sidebar with "Desktop Gadget Gallery".
@maxshadow They did not take a feature away, they just improved it. Instead of having a sidebar on the right or left side of your screen you can now put gadgets anywhere on the screen. Each gadget has an option to "enlarge" as if you were to move a gadget from the sidebar to the desktop in Vista. If you right click a gadget you have an option there to keep it on top of other windows. I find the "Desktop Gadget Gallery" far easier to use and much more flexible in comparison to Vista's sidebar.
@omghom Yeah but the Sidebar makes everything move over so gadgets wont cover other items, it keeps them neet, orderly and always ontop without covering anything.
Vista took away from Win98 the option to open mutipul windows of WMP. Now you can only open one at time where in Win98 you can have many open windows of Windows Media Player running (just an example).
@maxshadow But if you think about it, no one needs multiple windows of WMP. I've yet to meet a person that listens to multiple songs at the same time. And I know maximizing a window in Windows 7 covers the gadgets, but you can still see them by hovering the cursor on the bottom left corner of the screen.
@omghom What if you wanted to compare side by side two videos or see how a song would sound mixed into one playing already? You can't do that anymore with WMP...you used to but not any more (I used to this this all the time). They took that option away.
Why "hover over" when you can see it plain as day in Vista's Sidebar...no need to move your mosue while your typing up a document and want to quickly know the date or how the Dow is doing at the moment.
@maxshadow Well, I wouldn't worry too much about having a sidebar or not. I mean, it's Windows 7's speed and stability what matters to me. Vista is way too buggy in comparison. I also like how you can dock programs on the taskbar like you would in a Mac's dock. But hey, everyone has their own tastes. If you don't want to upgrade to 7 just because you can't see your gadgets as quick as Vista then it's your choice. As for me, Windows 7 works great and I love it :)
@omghom Vista works fine for me, boots up fast and shuts down fast. I never really had any "buggy" issues. You can dock programs to the Taskbar in Vista by drag & dropping them there. My issue is not with Win7 but with IE8 not working with the Sidebar and high DPI's.
Another thing Microsoft did to IE8 is if you turn off Auto-Suggest it turns off the history drop down. I like the history drop-down box but don't like Auto-Suggest and you can't change the way the two are connected.
@maxshadow You are saying you haven't had any bug problems in Vista and you are complaining about IE8 not working correctly along with the sidebar and high DPI's. I'm sorry to dissapoint you but that is called a bug, something that has been fixed in Windows 7. You SHOULD upgrade whenever you get a chance, but it's your decision to make. And no, you can't dock programs to the taskbar in Vista, this feature is new to Windows 7 and it's easier to use than Vista's quicklaunch toolbar.
@omghom How come this "bug" only happens with IE8 (and IE9 beta) and NOT IE7 using Vista with the Sidebar and high DPI's. And how can you say that Win7 corrects this "bug" when you even said that Microsoft did away with the Sidebar in Win7? The issue isn't with Gadgets but with Gadgets in the Sidebar.
@maxshadow You don't understand. This BUG happens with IE8 and IE 9 in VISTA, not in Windows 7. Having IE8 or IE9 on Windows 7 with a High DPI and a bunch of gadgets on the desktop shows no bugs at all, everything works as it should. And I find it ridiculous that you don't want to upgrade just because you can't see your gadgets all the time in a reserved screen space. But then again, It's your choice to make, not mine. If you want to keep having issues like this then stay with Vista.
@omghom I do understand and the reason why Win7 and IE8 don't have this issue is because Win7 did away with the Sidebar. The Sidebar is the issue and instead of Microsoft dealing with why the Sidebar/IE8/DPI settings mess things up...they did away with the Sidebar all together.
The NEVER addressed why Vista/Sidebar/IE8/DPI all combined to mess up the gadgets in the Sidebar.
Now why should I HAVE to upgrade my operating system just so I can use the Sidebar that WONT exist anymore?
@maxshadow Jesus Christ... the sidebar is still in Windows 7, they just removed the black frame it had. You STILL have GADGETS, and whenever you add a gadget to the desktop you can see in the Task Manager that a new process called "sidebar.exe" has appeared. So technically, you still have a sidebar and it's gadgets, but in a cleaner, less resource-hogger way. And I don't want you to upgrade because of that, I'm telling you it's best to upgrade because your computer would be faster and better.
@omghom So....why don't they take the fix in Win7 and apply it to Windows Update so we don't have to upgrade the whole OS? If in fact Win7 fixes the Sidebar/DPI/IE8 why not download the fix in an Update?
I'm not going to purchase a whole OS and risk having a bigger headache of my computer being messed up (who hasen't heard the horror stories with upgrades).
@maxshadow First of all, you don't need to purchase it. Everyone knows there are ways to get it on the internet. Also, Microsoft can't add the fix as an update because Windows 7 is different from Vista. Windows 7 has different system files, different structure, different configurations, etc. There was never a fix for Windows 7 to remove the bug with IE8 because there was never a bug with IE8 on Windows 7 in the first place.
@omghom Dude, are you serious...you want me to steal Win7. This whole conversation is worthless. I'm not going to hack Vista or Win7 just to get the issue with IE8 and the Sidebar to work or download 7 illegally.
@maxshadow Didn't you know Microsoft isn't selling the OS but the product key inside? This is why they give you a 30-day trial when you install it without typing in the product key. You can download Windows 7 on the internet, try it out and if it works for you then you can buy a product key at a near store or over the internet. Jeez...
@maxshadow no no, i have windows 7, after i installed the new iE9 beta the calendar gadget doesnt show a date anymore after the restart. and another custom gadget lost the transparency..
@Mpkoschw I agree one should not compare browsers, untill they get final.
Last thing I heard was that both Chrome and Firefox was getting HWA, so I do not think it will be on that point that MS wants to beat them (Microsoft will have too hard a time competing on speed, because their JS-engine sucks and HWA can be copied).
But I think MS wants webmasters to put in those ugly meta tags in their webpages, that are Windows specific. It is the good old "three E's" again.
can someone help me ok here is my problem : if i install ie9 beta and next year the rc version wich is stable version comes out will my beta version of ie9 be switched to the rc verion ? please help me out with this question someone who knows
@gameteacher101 First of all: the RC version, although more stable than beta, will not be the final version. RC stands for "release candidate", which means developers just need to focus on bug fixes instead of UI design. Once the RC version is available later this year you will be able to upgrade your current beta version of IE9 through Windows Update.
@ArcanePath360 Changing folder backgrounds is useless and a complete waste of time. You're doing wrong in prefering eyecandy over functionality and core improvements.
@omghom Perhaps people decorating their houses to make them look better is also a waste of time. They must be doing wrong choosing to have something nice to look at. Functionality? Core improvements? I can and have got these with Google Chrome. So I have eye candy AND functionality.
@fishersann2k7 Why do everyone treat IE9 BETA as a final?
It is buggy... that is why it is BETA...
It is funny, though, thinking how MS has declared Google "a not a serious company", and open source as communism, they have copied everything from the UI - litteraly stolen it ;)
@s9729126c I have never heard anyone from Mozilla claiming that Google is not a serious company. Or that open source is communism. Like MS did - and then stole from them.
Opera has not done that either, and that is closed source.
In fact, MS is the only one who have said that. And then stolen from the same company and the same community.
That is the differense.
I think the right word to describe Microsoft is "hypocrites" ;)
@s9729126c There is another thing, that makes this quite hilarious. The "reasons" for Microsoft to use that UI - they are taken, word by word, from the Google Chrome video. They have not done any researech themselves, not even changed a word, they just copied everything from Google - the not serious communist company ;)
I always have likes EI8... not because of the crap speed but for the looks.. too bad somthing went wrong when installing win7 on my machine which causes IE8 to scroll like poop!! glad to say its all fixed in IE9 beta! whoo!

IE9 Beta still hasn't fixed the issue with Windows Sidebar and a DPI over the standard 96 setting (which is too low/small for large screen sizes.)
What happens is the Sidebar breaks...clock freezes, pink or colored boarders around Gadgets.
This issue is known in IE8 and is continuing in IE9.

@omghom No I haven't upgraded to Win7.
Why doesn't Win7 have a Sidebar anymore? At least with Vista you can have the Sidebar always on top or just have gadgets free float on the desktop.
Microsoft ALWAYS take options away with every upgrade of EVERYTHING they make.
