i played on hard for a while during the night and NO monsters spawned at all,it was weird

I think there was a sheep or 2 you forgot to slaughter! ヅ Friendly mobs don't spawn like they used to in prev versions. When map is gen 1/10 chunks will spawn friendly's. If you kill them all you'll have to go further to find more. Animal breeding isn't until 1.9 pre. You'll also need to get used to eating more often in 1.8.1, you heal quickest when your hunger bar is full. Best thing you could do after your chicken meal is use some bonemeal on mushrooms to get giant ones and break up for more.
