In addition to the seed vault, why are farmers not being encouraged to grow and perpetuate the same diverse selection of food crops? We can surely do both, and diversity in nutrition is a key element of HEALTH.

Are there any GM seeds in this vault? I would doubt it.
@whorlus Cultivating, using and maintaining a diverse selection of food plants NOW also protects against loss of food due to disaster, to a certain degree. All species have different strengths and resistance to disease/pollution/atmospheric change. Any gardener knows that growing a wide variety of crops ensures you get at least *something* for your efforts even if there is a bad season..
