  • Rexenne!!

You are super and is good that you keep up you cool videos!

    thank you!! :)

  • I am doing research with my 9 year old on being a spinner in the colonies, circa the 1700"s & we came upon your video. Great way for us to watch it! Through all of this research, etc., my husband may have to worry about me starting a new hobby! Thanks for the video! :0) Oh, btw, I'm on my son's youtube acct. :)

  • I pinch with my right and draft with my left too. I'm right handed and everyone asks if I'm left handed.

I started out that way because I was taught on an old quill wheel and the only way to treadle put the quill on my right.

  • although I am not a REAL observant Youtube watcher, are you left handed?

My spinning drafting looks just like yours, but opposite hands. I hope you get back into fiberness soon :) I love your videos!

  • Beautiful spinning job! I'm a beginner. Can you do the long draw on a hand spindle?

  • i *cannot* get the hang of drafting. do you have any advice?

  • Practice makes perfect. Be sure to have your hands far enough apart to allow the fibers to slip past each other, & also don't have a death grip. If you need to, park & draft: Build up some tension in your draft, park (stop treadling), then practice drafting. All good tings come with time, patience, and PRACTICE-PRACTICE-PRACTICE. :)

  • Be sure to pinch the twist so that the twist does not travel into the bulk of your roving as that will make it very difficult to draft into the thickness/thinness that you want. I will PM you with some of my favorite internet resources as youtube won't let me post a link in comments.

  • I spin that way, too, mostly, sort of.

I'm also, well, "fluffy." I figure it's better to have a little softness in the body than a lot of softness (and possible rot) in the head. I, for one, like your videos. You kept me spinning when I almost gave up.

  • This was interesting. Was the twist getting into the thick fibers before you pulled them though? it didn't look like it was bothering you. I'd see you'd take your pinch away and then keep spinning for awhile anyway.

  • Oh my gosh! You make it look SO easy. It reminds me of a spider spinning a web--no disrespect intended. Just seems so natural and magic. Makes me want to try it but I'm barely learning normal spinning. Love your videos. They're a great help. WIsh you had one on plying. Maybe you do and I just haven't found it yet.

  • haha dorkheads.

Anyway, I THINK you're just using a rolag there to spin with, is that correct?I am not sure how to spin from rolags since they're going the wrong way length-wise. :/

  • Yeappers, that there be a rolag. That was before I bought all my fancy spinning equipment. :)

  • Why do you call it backwards? I am new to this and although right handed, I short-draw draft with my left hand. My left shoulder gets cranky if I hold my arm out too long....

I like how we could see you clamping the fiber with the rear hand. I needed to see it. I can read about it all I want, but my fingers need to learn..

    Thanks for helping us!

  • Because it was backwards from what I was watching. The pinching was happening closer to the opening and my pinching was back near the rolag. :) Have fun!

  • Very nicely & CLEARLY done! I NEVER spin the "normal" or traditional ways either! Being self-taught - I find that it's only important that the METHODS in which we spin - we DO so CONSISTENTLY! So ALL my yarnage is spun "backwards" too! Very NICE WORK on the Video! Teri -aka- The Dream Spinner

  • Thanks so much for all the postive feedback! If anyone is unaware, I am doing a fundraiser to raise the funds to replace a RAM chip in my puter that is crappin out, making it impossible to edit video to upload to youtube. I have two more waiting to be edited! You can find my fundraiser page at rexenne. chipin. com/ new-1gig-ram-chip (take out spaces). I appriciate every little bit that helps! Thanks for your consideration and support!!

  • this is so calming. I love your videos

  • very nice. I watched this after the English Long Drawer video. I'm learning.

  • Great video, sort of like how I spin, which goes to prove that it doesn't really matter as long as the end result pleases you and is what you wanted to spin! keep it up!

  • To answer Spinnergrrrl: I think I was spinning shetland and I don't keep track of the WPI or TPI and yes I do ply it. Sometimes I wind the singles into a ball and ply the ends together, and other times when I need lots more, I will spin two or more bobbins full and then ply. Spinnin is supposed to be fun and relaxing so I don't get all tied up in the technicalities of WPI and TPI. I just use my instincts and they have not run me astray yet!

  • Sorry for the long delay in getting comments approved. When I clicked the link to approve them, they weren't there but today here are four waiting to be approved!

  • Pretty neat - I'll give it a try!!

  • Thanks for posting this! I think I spin long backwards and sideways draw!!

    :0

  • Nice video Rexenne. Maybe you discovered a new technique. I have questions-- what are you spinning, what's the wpi of the single, what's the tpi, and are you going to ply it?

  • I'd call that... long draw forward drafting! I like it. ;-)

  • Long draw forward drafting...I like that! LMAO

  • I'm a new spinner (I learned how by reading stuff on the internet, and have never had anyone actually show me) I don't understand why you say what you're doing is 'backwards' it looks fine to me! hehehe Maybe I'm backwards too? LOVE your videos, specially the one on spinning silk hankies! I've been wanting to try that!

  • My wife got me hooked on crochet and I plan to build her a spinning wheel. It's cool to see where mittens ultimately come from. The background music is cool too. Hope you don't mind if I put it on my iPod

  • I'd have to stop spinnin, find the end that gets sucked in onto the bobbin, rethread the whirl, and just rejoin the ends by spinning the overlapping ends together.

  • Honestly, I've never seen this done before (nor do I know how it's done). So don't laugh if this sounds stupid, but what happens if the "string" breaks while you're doing it?
