Hey i'm Icelandic and whaling is banned in Iceland.
We are only allowed to hunt whales for scientific researches.
The whales we are allowed to hunt is one Minke Whale and two blue whales in 5 year time and we hardly ever to it. That whale was the first one in 6 years and the skeleton was put in a museum for teaching reasons and the meat was sold for eating and the fat and oil was sold and made into medicine.
isn´t this just how life works :P people getting super emotional because of a whale being killed i bet most of the people in green peace and sea sheppards groups eat meat from animals that where also killed.

I wouldn't eat the whale since they are almost extinc, I think they should find a way to raise more young whales, so there would be more in the future to eat. But keep eating and no raising it will.becomes extinc for sure.

i find this quite disgusting actually, that animal, that was once a majestic creature minding its own business in its own home, is now lying on a concrete floor being degraded of its beauty by children as young as the girl in the pink jacket. fair enough that everyone needs to eat, but there are many other animal and plants that can be eaten, that DONT involve ripping this poor thing from its home. its no wonder whale populations are decreasing...

I like animals, but I like life also and starving sucks. As long as you are respectful of the animal, are not sadistic like the Japanese when it comes to killing (or there lack of, eating animals when they are still alive) then I don't see a problem.
Because Whales are proven to already be endangered. They're struggling to survive. Cutting their numbers is not helping. There are other sources of food for japanese to go after. If the whale, or any other major animal, goes extinct it'll hurt the entire world's foodchain. So WE will be one step closer to extinction. Besides, Whales are the second most intelligent animal in the history of the world. They're special and important. Cows are systematically replenished, not endangered.

@skolvold Actually, a good few breeds of whale ARE in fact endangered due to practices just like this. Pollution is another cause as well. Whales reproduce really slowly, so (as in the case of the Right Whale) if they are hunted to the brink they won't reproduce the lost numbers as fast because of nature and pollution.

But as far as i know we dont eat dolphin, just mink whale. And the population of mink whales in the north atlantic are with a 95% accuracy 125,000 - 245,000. Not what i would call endangered considering there are mink whales in the southern hemisphere.

Because Whales are proven to already be endangered. They're struggling to survive. Cutting their numbers is not helping. There are other sources of food for japanese to go after. If the whale, or any other major animal, goes extinct it'll hurt the entire world's foodchain. So WE will be one step closer to extinction. Besides, Whales are the second most intelligent animal in the history of the world. They're special and important. Cows are systematically replenished, not endangered.

I'd understand if there was a whole fleet of ships lined up with their kills with constant slaughtering but what's with the hate? I wonder how often this processing facility is even used,it seems like a rare event this happens,like a season or two. I'd swear reading the posts the entire harbor should be red with blood. I'd recommend to my fellow meat eaters to visit our friends in iceland by the way to try out their minke whale meat. It tastes like beef with a hint of the sea,healthy too.

@mysterioustricks we are people, we would be able to adapt to the whales hunting us, there is a reason why humans have adapted and survived all these thousands of years, because we are have a higher intellect. At one time we were hunted by lions and other preditors of Africa. Early humans were hunted by early monkey's baboons and other ancient preditors. SO yes we were hunted at one time, we adapted, we survive, also, the whale that is most commonly killed isnt indangered

i would get sick to eat this animal. they have been proven to have higher communication than most great apes. it would be like eating human evolutions closest cousin.

@skolvold Actually, a good few breeds of whale ARE in fact endangered due to practices just like this. Pollution is another cause as well. Whales reproduce really slowly, so (as in the case of the Right Whale) if they are hunted to the brink they won't reproduce the lost numbers as fast because of nature and pollution.

But as far as i know we dont eat dolphin, just mink whale. And the population of mink whales in the north atlantic are with a 95% accuracy 125,000 - 245,000. Not what i would call endangered considering there are mink whales in the southern hemisphere.

and yes, Japan does eat dolphin. watch the movie/documentary The Cove and Blood Dolphins. both talk about Japan's dolphin killing cove, which can be linked to the sea entertainment industry too. they drive hundreds in, take the biggest and best for shows and kill the rest for the meat. senseless.

@inuyasharules131 No but thats the whale WE eat in Norway so i dont see the problem that we kill 200-400 whales each year... But i guess its rigth that Japan is overfishing, but i just get annoyed when greenpeace protest against Norway for whaling a not endagered whale.

@skolvold well that i can totally see being an annoyance, but the one ive been following is Japans bit in this. havent heard a thing on Norway at all really.

@skolvold The Fin whale is endagered, hey bet you will feel great when your telling your kids or grand kids about how you USED go out whale watching to see these massive beuatiful creatures. But they will only be able to look at photos because they are not alive any more, then you could show them how they used to cut them up for your own self endolgent meals....
