I just heard this on Radio 4 ("The Paper Round" series, Tony McCaulay episode) and I thought it was Hazel O'Connor singing !

A bit more searching led me to this. Great song and interesting to find out that it wasn't released in Canada or the US because the political context of the song.

Apparently, it was written by Drafi Deutscher for Marcia Barrett when she was solo, but when she sang it with Boney M on tour is was so popular they added it to their second album.

Number 1 in Germany, UK 8.

to settle the 'is it live debate'....if you listen very carefully btw 02:46 - 02:49 you can hear Marcia 'pp' on the mike when she sing the word 'people'..you would never get this in a studio cos they use a 'pop screen' shield on the mike to prevent this and also, if it did happen in studio it gets edited out of the final mix..so there...debate is over!
