Wes Anderson has come so close to getting it oh so perfect... I wanted to love this movie but the story never comes together. Some great dry humor and camera play as usual, but the story lacked purpose. Maybe write it yourself next time!
But the story does come together. Watch it again. Each brother finds in India the exact thing he is running away from in his life. Meaningless sex, death (and birth), and their mother. If you're looking for more out of a movie than themes and a clever commentary on life though...
Seen it four times - it's got some great dialogue at parts and I do love a lot of the camera work but its not his best movie and I was hoping for more, not less, out of his latest work. And, sorry but he wasn't running away from "meaningless sex." You are reaching and I appreciate that you're a fan but come-on.
It's just a different sort of movie, definitely less theatrical in scale than his others. But good in it's own way.
And he was running away from meaningless sex. In the Hotel Chevalier short before the movie he has meaningless sex with his ex-girlfriend, in a relationship which will never amount to anything. He obviously went to Paris to try to forget about her. Hence: running away from meaningless sex, which is what he finds in India.
One of my very favorite movies of all time.

Not true. I saw Hotel Chavalier as it played before Darjeeling Limited.

He reminded me of George Harrison a lot... must be the whole India thing that brought my mind to it, looks wise.

Whoa...I thought I was the only one who thought that. He reminds me a lot of George in this movie, too.

I couldn't agree with sbrons1 more. I still loved the filn though. Just because of the directing and camera tricks.

Was Hotel Chevalier not shown anywhere in America? Here in England it was on before the film in the cinemas.

I was at a dollar theater in Utah and they showed Hotel Chevalier.

Is that what it sounds like?
A dollar theatre? meaning it's a dollar entry?
If it does then thats about 50p. Holy cow.
It's about £7 everywhere here.
carlosfarva 3 years ago
well dollar theaters are rare, and this one only runs a movie for about 5 days.

I still don't see how a train in western India would be named Darjeeling, which is on the other side of the country.
