  • Would definitely, love to see this on a nylon string, classical guitar. Also, i like it when you say cheers, it makes me giggle.

  • I want to add my praise to other comments. I agree that this is the best cover of "Western" on You Tube. I've listened to your other stuff and am very impressed ("Bukena" is a very good original.

  • Very nice !!!!!!

  • Nice job, I'm halfway through learning this piece and thought I'd check out some videos of it and found yours. You're a fine player.I'll be checking out some more of your vids.

  • This is a remarkable rendition of one of the most beautiful steel acoustic songs ever written. I've watched several imitators here on YouTube and yours is by far the best, and most accurate. Even still, it conveys a true sense of just how difficult this song is to play. I've been playing guitar casually a long time and I simply cannot do it. And I cannot find any video clips of de Grassi performing it, either. Does anyone know if he performs it live? Anyway, thanks, and well done.

  • @820stovall Thanks very much indeed for the kind words. It certainly is a tricky piece, and even though this is a 2 year-old video I'm still trying to perfect it now! I've been casting around for videos of De Grassi playing it for several years now, but to no avail. That's probably more to do with a general dearth of live videos than him specifically choosing not to play this song live, but I could be wrong. Anyway, glad you enjoyed it and thanks once more.

  • that almost makes my cry to hear you play that. I was discovring this music in the 80s. I luv rock but Windham Hills and Narada artist did things for me I will never be able to describe. And to see a young dude play that so nicely... Im not a sis, but I luv it!

  • You do an excellent rendition of one of my favorite songs by AG. Please continue to play such lovely melodies as this...thank you Fred : )

  • nice playing --- very good timing

  • excellent....how long did it take to learn it?

  • argentinaaaa!!!!! la re puta madree!!!

  • friggin amazing

  • Well played man.

  • I love this song!!! Nice work.

You should do a tut on it, plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

  • Dude this is an awesome cover! Well done!

  • Nicely done!

  • NICE CURT COBAIN

  • Fred, i am from Brazil and i tell ya... If every slob were like you, i would like to be one. Man, you are a fucking talent player. I hope anyone brings you to Brazil someday. Anyway, i became your fan. YOU ARE NOT A SLOB, REALLY. I wish you good luck, guy.

  • great

  • where did you get these tabs?

  • there is a thing named "google"

  • Gotta agree. Absolutey my favorite DeGrassi ... if not one of my favorite guitar songs of all time.

I worked on this for near 6 months back in the late 1980s when I was your age. It's 20 years later and mine *still* doesn't sound near as good as yours.

    Great job.

  • This is very beautifully played. I love listening to your acoustics, because they make me calm and help me think. Fantastic job, keep it up and thanks for uploading this.

    Cheers!

  • wow u played that so wonderful! thats so good! please keep it up!

  • Nice job! I hope to tackle this song one day when I get better at playing...

  • Which album is this on?

  • It's from "Southern Exposure", which is well worth getting hold of if you don't already have it!

  • Well done mate. Just take care of the dynamics. Glad to see you playing this amazing song.

    Cheers

  • awesome, one of my all time faves, you got it !

  • That's one of my favorites too and from one of my all time favorite Degrassi albums Southern Exposure. You play it so well. Do you know any others off that album?

  • Dammitall you make me one of those there homasektshuls- you so good lookin' an' besides all that you makes de gut muzzica. Wanna hugya. So hate me for it. Whatever. You ever make it to HHI SC (google) Look me up. Not to worry; just think you're cool. Yeah I'm not homophobic... whatever, still, damn you are someone I'd love to hug... "FRED... FRED IS MAH FREN"... GONNA LOVYA... SQUEEEZYA... DUHH FRED IS MUH FRIEND"... and damned good music. Yeah I'm in love with you but WTF. No problem.

  • thats pretty legit playing right there. congrats and this is my favorite de grassi song as well! great piece.

  • beautiful sounds

  • what is the exact tuning you are playing please

  • It's written in the tags - CGCFBbDb. Cheers!

  • Very cool man. I remember getting his book back in the day. Check out Causeway and McCormick. Both very cool tunes to learn! Also, let's get some old school Dream Theater covers up there!

  • You played exactly the same as the cd from alex de grassi, How did you do that?

  • cheers from Brazil. Nice...

  • Good job! Wonderful, friend! But the tuning written in your tags is not correct. Shouldn't it DADGCEb or a relative translated tuning? You in fact play using this tuning. Anyway I am really enjoyed!

  • You're absolutely right on the original tuning, but I explained in my comment that I'm playing it a tone (or step) lower than the original, because I was too lazy to tune properly! Thanks for the comment.

  • Oh! Sorry,I didn't read it. Wonderful sound,anyway!

  • @Fredbaty Dare I say I almost like this tuning more than the original. The tone is fatter and even more mellow than the original. This is my favorite Alex de Grassi song too, btw. It's an acoustic guitar masterpiece in my humble opinion.

  • It's nice to know that the younger generation still appreciates good music. Very good job.

  • I'd like to learn this song, but most of the tab's end is missing. Where did you find the whole tab?

  • I'm afraid the website I got it from was shut down by the MPA not so long ago, but hopefully it should be back in an MPA-approved format before too long... Fingers crossed!

  • OK. This way, I think I should get it from this video. I'm glad that I can see your fingers.:D And when the tab comes out I can check my mistakes.

    Thank you.

  • You're really really good again!!

  • Dude this song is effing hard. You make it look so easy.

  • omg how old are you!? ive watched you a lot and i still can not believe your this good!! you are freaking amazing!!!! keep the videos coming i love to watch them! <3 Callie

  • My God, how old are you? This is the 10ht time i'm watching this video and still can't believe you play that good. I could not play this way even if I try this song for 15 years. Western is my favorite song from De Grassi. You did really great job. I've been watching more from you. You really have the gift. Keep it up.

  • Thanks very much indeed! I'm 18. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  • Good stuff, kiddo! Where did you learn the fingerings? Is there a tablature or instruction set out there somewhere? Please advise!

  • There was indeed a Powertab floating around, but the site I used for tabs got shut down recently, so I'm afraid unless you can find something on Google I can't be any more helpful than that!

  • Did you ever find a tab that was complete?

  • Holy crap that was good. :O

    Gaz

  • good job

that's not an easy piece to play, the fingerings can be a bit much in a few spots

take a couple of classical or fingerstyle lessons to get that right hand freed up

  • Fucking awesome like all your videos!

    Five stars*****

  • bravo. that was beautiful.

  • very well done it sounded spot on.

Keep up the great work 5*****

    Cheers Steve

  • very well done it sounded spot on.

keep up the great work. 5*****

    Cheers Steve

  • Atta boy. That was a beautiful song I'd never heard before. Great stuff.

  • Acoustic guitar is so cool. Great job Fred.

  • Awesome playing fred :)

  • Thanks Dave. All credit to you for the tab!

  • Beautifully done kiddo! 5 stars & sub - I want to hear more - lots more!

  • Yeah move over Andy Mcgee and Andy Mckee. Beautiful tune, nice cover. When is your album coming out?

  • Haha, but Andy McGee is just so good! McKee's got nothing on him...

Um, as for the album, it rather looks as though I might have to go for a summer-ish release, now. Exams are piling up like you wouldn't believe and everything's trying to stop me playing guitar, which is a bit of a bummer. I'm going to see how much I can get done this Easter, though. Thanks for the comment!

  • Awesome i shall wait eagerly. Also on a random note, my guitar teacher and i have been playing through 'Leylines Under Putney Bridge', i'm just about at the level where it is playable. Man i'm so in love that song, SO good.

  • That's a long time we didn't have an acoustic song from you.

    Always a pleasure for hears.

    Keep playing Fred.

  • Move over Andy McGee .... there's a new kid in town XD

  • Your guitar sound & your play is fantastic. Keep it up !
