I want to add my praise to other comments. I agree that this is the best cover of "Western" on You Tube. I've listened to your other stuff and am very impressed ("Bukena" is a very good original.
Nice job, I'm halfway through learning this piece and thought I'd check out some videos of it and found yours. You're a fine player.I'll be checking out some more of your vids.
This is a remarkable rendition of one of the most beautiful steel acoustic songs ever written. I've watched several imitators here on YouTube and yours is by far the best, and most accurate. Even still, it conveys a true sense of just how difficult this song is to play. I've been playing guitar casually a long time and I simply cannot do it. And I cannot find any video clips of de Grassi performing it, either. Does anyone know if he performs it live? Anyway, thanks, and well done.
@820stovall Thanks very much indeed for the kind words. It certainly is a tricky piece, and even though this is a 2 year-old video I'm still trying to perfect it now! I've been casting around for videos of De Grassi playing it for several years now, but to no avail. That's probably more to do with a general dearth of live videos than him specifically choosing not to play this song live, but I could be wrong. Anyway, glad you enjoyed it and thanks once more.
that almost makes my cry to hear you play that. I was discovring this music in the 80s. I luv rock but Windham Hills and Narada artist did things for me I will never be able to describe. And to see a young dude play that so nicely... Im not a sis, but I luv it!
Fred, i am from Brazil and i tell ya... If every slob were like you, i would like to be one. Man, you are a fucking talent player. I hope anyone brings you to Brazil someday. Anyway, i became your fan. YOU ARE NOT A SLOB, REALLY. I wish you good luck, guy.
Gotta agree. Absolutey my favorite DeGrassi ... if not one of my favorite guitar songs of all time.
I worked on this for near 6 months back in the late 1980s when I was your age. It's 20 years later and mine *still* doesn't sound near as good as yours.
This is very beautifully played. I love listening to your acoustics, because they make me calm and help me think. Fantastic job, keep it up and thanks for uploading this.
That's one of my favorites too and from one of my all time favorite Degrassi albums Southern Exposure. You play it so well. Do you know any others off that album?
Dammitall you make me one of those there homasektshuls- you so good lookin' an' besides all that you makes de gut muzzica. Wanna hugya. So hate me for it. Whatever. You ever make it to HHI SC (google) Look me up. Not to worry; just think you're cool. Yeah I'm not homophobic... whatever, still, damn you are someone I'd love to hug... "FRED... FRED IS MAH FREN"... GONNA LOVYA... SQUEEEZYA... DUHH FRED IS MUH FRIEND"... and damned good music. Yeah I'm in love with you but WTF. No problem.
Very cool man. I remember getting his book back in the day. Check out Causeway and McCormick. Both very cool tunes to learn! Also, let's get some old school Dream Theater covers up there!
Good job! Wonderful, friend! But the tuning written in your tags is not correct. Shouldn't it DADGCEb or a relative translated tuning? You in fact play using this tuning. Anyway I am really enjoyed!
You're absolutely right on the original tuning, but I explained in my comment that I'm playing it a tone (or step) lower than the original, because I was too lazy to tune properly! Thanks for the comment.
@Fredbaty Dare I say I almost like this tuning more than the original. The tone is fatter and even more mellow than the original. This is my favorite Alex de Grassi song too, btw. It's an acoustic guitar masterpiece in my humble opinion.
I'm afraid the website I got it from was shut down by the MPA not so long ago, but hopefully it should be back in an MPA-approved format before too long... Fingers crossed!
omg how old are you!? ive watched you a lot and i still can not believe your this good!! you are freaking amazing!!!! keep the videos coming i love to watch them! <3 Callie
My God, how old are you? This is the 10ht time i'm watching this video and still can't believe you play that good. I could not play this way even if I try this song for 15 years. Western is my favorite song from De Grassi. You did really great job. I've been watching more from you. You really have the gift. Keep it up.
There was indeed a Powertab floating around, but the site I used for tabs got shut down recently, so I'm afraid unless you can find something on Google I can't be any more helpful than that!
Haha, but Andy McGee is just so good! McKee's got nothing on him...
Um, as for the album, it rather looks as though I might have to go for a summer-ish release, now. Exams are piling up like you wouldn't believe and everything's trying to stop me playing guitar, which is a bit of a bummer. I'm going to see how much I can get done this Easter, though. Thanks for the comment!
Awesome i shall wait eagerly. Also on a random note, my guitar teacher and i have been playing through 'Leylines Under Putney Bridge', i'm just about at the level where it is playable. Man i'm so in love that song, SO good.
Would definitely, love to see this on a nylon string, classical guitar. Also, i like it when you say cheers, it makes me giggle.

that's not an easy piece to play, the fingerings can be a bit much in a few spots
take a couple of classical or fingerstyle lessons to get that right hand freed up
